Well that settles that, for now. Although I am happy to see Amazon continuing to invest in the 6 inch market. With all the hype around bigger devices like the Oasis and the Kobo Forma, there are still some of us who actually like smaller devices, at smaller prices. The 25 gram weight loss and big jump in storage both very appealing.

Ok, this will be interesting...on the Amazon Australia listing there's no mention of Audible support as a feature but under formats supported...

Content Formats Supported
Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; HTML DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, PMP through conversion; Audible audio format (AAX).

Amazon USA however does mention Audible as a feature...I bet the Aussie version has Audible disabled when they ship it.

It looks like they used the body of the Voyage without the haptic buttons. The edging looks identical. It’s nice, but not exciting for me. I have the Oasis 2 and am quite tempted by the Kobo Forma, so I was waiting to see what the new kindle would be like. I’m not surprised that it is an incremental upgrade. I am quite surprised that they still refuse to use a comfort light system. I imagine they are trying to perfect it to avoid the light issues that have plagued them in the past. It’s likely then that the next Oasis will have a comfort light, and that this feature will be reserved for the top specced model.

I think it’s a good solid upgrade to their top-selling reader and will appeal to its target market. I wasn’t expecting anything very exciting after seeing the giant bezel teaser pic last week. :D

No mention of the battery size yet, just gives a warning about streaming audio will use more battery life. They didn't mention that before on the Oasis. Lol. I hope they kept the same size battery on the Paperwhite. I'll wait for longer term reviews on battery life.

Quite disappointing, they should have at least included some type of night light and upgraded the Oasis in that regard.
This is quite unappealing for most all of the people who own a more recent Kindle model.
Kobo doesn‘t offer cloud features outside of their store, Amazon doesn’t offer somewhat recent mainstream features in their devices.
I guess the ereader market is now officially the household appliance market.

I'm really getting tired of Amazon's naming scheme. It's so danged confusing. Every new model they introduce is always the "all-new" model. So how do you differentiate all of the previous "all-new" models?

Amazon considers this Paperwhite to be a 10th gen Kindle, even though it's a 4th gen Paperwhite.

Let's get with the program Amazon and keep it simple. This should be called the Kindle Paperwhite 4.

I didn't think much of color changing light either until I had an ereader that has it.

Blue light affecting your sleep may be a bunch of bunk. But at night when I'm reading on my Aura and my better half is reading a Glowlight 3, the amber glow is much more pleasant and makes my low lit Aura seem like it's glaring.

I am cheered by Amazon selling a cheap 6 inch reader that is waterproof. Aside from the retired Glowlight Plus, if you want waterproofing you have to buy a larger, more expensive reader.

I guess it's nice for those who want it but I think "down the road" when the battery goes kaput, is it going to be impossible to replace, like the new Oasis? From my personal viewpoint, I would rather have a non-waterproof device where the battery can be replaced.

As for no "warm color" feature ... I'm really surprised they didn't add that. I really thought they would.

I have the new Nook Glowlight with the colored light feature. I found that adding just a little bit of warmth to the light makes it a little nicer but the truth is I only notice it when comparing. While reading my Paperwhite or even my original Kobo Aura with it's splotchy light is just as good.

I do agree that the blue light thing is a gimmick, kind of like the 3D on the Amazon Fire phone. It's there because it sells units not because it makes for a better reading experience.

I think the most dramatic example of this kind of sales gimmick is the glossy computer screen. Matte screens look far better and are easier on our eyes and there's no real price difference but the customer in the store is attracted to the shiny screen so we have glossy screens for the most part.

How far down the road do you want? My Aura that I bought refurbished in April 2016 is still humming along and shows no signs of slowing. So is the old Nook ST w Glowlight that I bought in 2013.

I'd rather have a waterproof reader that I can take worry free into the tub for five years than a reader with a replaceable battery (both would be even better, I suppose).

I've got a Kindle (non-touch) where the battery is getting weak(er) and I will soon be replacing it. Then the first Touch I bought will also need a battery replacement soon. I've bought a used Kindle Keyboard that needed a new battery (and it's humming along fine now) and I've also replaced the battery on a used Nook Simple Touch (that I gave to my son) — it was like new, but I don't think the battery had been charged in years. My original NST will need a battery soon, as well. And I've got a Sony PRS-350 that will need a battery replaced (at least I think it's the battery — I bought it used, it might be more serious).

So the ability to replace batteries is important to me. Waterproofing? I don't read in the water. But I do realize that everyone is different. One person's necessary feature is another person's "meh."

I've got a PW3 (since 2015) and have long been eyeing the Oasis 2 for the water resistance and 32GB storage. However, I just couldn't bring myself to bite the bullet at ~$300 with tax (plus no manual orientation/rotation is a possible con for my usage). This PW4 looks far more palatable particularly with the 25% trade-in promo discount. :D

I want a small waterproof ereader, I have forty-five dollars in trade-in credit, and I like buying ereaders. :o

It seems I will have to resign myself to the fact that nobody wants to make high-end ereaders in small form. In a more perfect world it would be smaller and lighter, it would have buttons, and it most definitely would have the comfort light.

Amazon readers are pared-down LINUX. (Started out as Debian-derived if I recall.)
Less incentive for hackers so they don't get drawn into a war like Nook.

Probably an urban legend. :)
(Confusing Kindle with FIRE OS gadgetry.)

With all the talk of KINDLE glacial upgrade pace, they have no incentive to ditch a stable, small footprint codebase for...?
On minimalist gadgetry getting as close to the metal is best and it's hard to get more minimalist than Kindles.

Just a quick offtopic aside - if you bought it used did it come with an original sony charger? And is it simply not charging? I had a Sony reader that I thought was dead until I got an original Sony charger for it - in this case it was a Playstation Portable charger. That resolved the problem.

That depends on content type. My manga (Japanese comics) averages around 80MB per volume so 32GB would barely fit ~400 of those. A piece of cake even for the PW3.

I've got original chargers (both for the mini and micro USB Sonys). I'll try it, but the 350 uses a micrUSB charger, so it's not going to be the same as those who could use the PSP chargers. What it does is, if plugged in, is blink three times if I try to turn it on. Otherwise, no light ever. (Just remembered, I threw the battery away, anticipating getting a new one.) It still blinks three times without the battery when plugged in I just found that out accidentally. :)

Actually it is real. There is a Kindle X (https://the-digital-reader.com/2017/06/27/co-branded-kindle-x-migu-launches-china/) sold in China, which is a basic e-ink Kindle running a version Fire OS with two apps, a Kindle reader and a Migu reader. Migu is part of China Mobile and sells e-books and other media.

It seems to have been a one-off thing in order to include the Migu reading app and I doubt it performs very well. I strongly doubt that Amazon will be moving to Android for their mainstream Kindles.

I never read in a dark room. I sometimes do read at night on my front porch with no light, although it's not all that dark there.

And yes, I like more and better features when they're features I'll use. I can't really tell the difference in 212 ppi and 300 ppi on an ereader so that isn't an issue for me.

When I first got my original Aura, which was my first Kobo, I thought I'd found the perfect reading device for me. Then I began encountering it's bugs and the limitations of it's firmware. Nothing major but just enough to take the edge off it's perfection. If it had the reliability and feature set of the Kindles of that same time I doubt I'd have bought anything else after. But i went back to the Kindle.

I need the text-to-speech regularly, but already have it on the Kindle 8 basic. Lots of folks don't use that feature, so not important to them at all. I just bought a second Voyage, so not in the market for a new Paperwhite, but it's cool the features they added.

Yikes! The original lit Nook did that and when Kobo and then Kindle followed adding lights they wisely moved them to the bottom because people complained about having to look at them when reading. Interesting that they've gone back to the top.
IMHO they are adding a 5th LED to try and even the light out and are marketing it as this great new feature to "increase brightness". LACK of brightness hasn't been a complaint I've heard about any of the lit ereaders :smack:.

the PW4 looks as though it has the Voyage case, minus (unfortunately) the page press areas. I wonder if it will have the same processor - or better - than the Voyage. I lost my Voyage last month while I was on holiday and first ordered a PW replacement, which I sent it back because, in addition to the weight and the heavy bezels (which I'd forgotten about) it was very slow compared to the Voyage. I bought a refurbished Voyage and also an Oasis, which I am still in two minds about. I don't like the form factor or how poor battery life is, but I do like the 7" screen, just enough to make it my primary Kindle.

How do you find the display on the 7" Oasis compared to the Voyage? At one point I had both, then compared them side by side and found text on the Oasis wasn't as sharp, or as black. Decided to only keep the Voyage (and have since picked up a 6" Oasis which I quite like).

I guess lights at the top explains the fat bezel there. Nook 3 has them at the top, but you have to tip the reader really far to see them. So they're not a problem at all when reading. Although the Nook doesn't have a flush screen.

Plastic substrates are a premium feature because they are newish, more expensive, and add value (less fragile and lower weight, each a significant value). The 13" Sony readers have had them for years since at that size the added robustness and lower weight are even more important.

Once yields and volumes are high enough, I don't see why glass substrates would not become obsolete. Maybe 400, 500, or 600 dpi is coming to glass substrates, so those would go to premium readers. But I would prefer plastic for e-ink.

This is exactly what's keeping me from upgrading to a 32GB Kindle (me eBook collection is at ~ 5,200, organized into about 10 collections). Not having a decent Collections management system (without jailbreaking) is a deal-breaker. I've looked at the options for Collections Management via Calibre and they are beyond daunting due to the complexity involved, IMHO.

I recently noticed on my Voyage that any collection larger than approximately 950 books won't allow anything to be added...SMH....:chinscratch::chinscratch:

I've got 3 jailbroken PW3s and another bricked PW3 (ebay used $40) which got that way when I was trying to jailbreak. :p

I definitely want the waterproofing though, and already have a plan for working around its quirks. Basically, only manga and Amazon purchased ebooks will be stored permanently on the PW4 (not a huge library so manual collection management is doable). Sideloaded books will be download/copy-read-delete.

I am very disappointed in the new Kindle. I have been hoping to replace my old Kindle Keyboard with a new Kindle for many years now. I tried a Paperwhite a few years ago but the screens were blotchy. (I tried two and had to return them both due to poor screen quality.)

I would prefer a screen that is larger than six inches and I won't buy one without an amber light option because I read at night, tend to have insomnia and have noticed a big improvement since my computer screen has been set to more amber tones. I thought for sure the new Kindle will finally have one and I'm shocked and dismayed that it doesn't.

Additionally, it's probably futile to hope that Kindle will ever have speakers again, but I do like that my Kindle Keyboard has them and wish they would include them again. (I get migraines and like to use TTS without having to use earphones or earbuds.)

I was also saddened to read that Amazon's Liquivista is dead. I held the tiniest glimmer of hope that Amazon would eventually introduce a color eReader. Is there any chance they could someday include a ClearInk screen? That technology is still moving forward, isn't it?

Lack of a 'comfort' light is a deal breaker for me. When I turn on my non-comfort light eReader in the middle of the night, the light is glaring even at its lowest setting.

I am happy for people who wanted waterproof, but that holds zero appeal for me.

I like Amazon's software, but I may just have to give up on Kindle and buy another Android based eReader instead to get the features I need. The upside is that Boyue and other brands tend to have much better specs for a lot less money it seems.

BlueSkies, it's good that you point out features that are MISSING since they may very well be important to others. Blue light was not an issue for ME because I don't read at night in bed. Many do.

I also like the speakers, and while I used to use either the Kindle Keyboard or Kindle Touch every day while washing dishes or doing laundry, my hearing has diminished to the point that I now have to use a Kindle Basic or the Fire with bluetooth speakers. Given that most ereaders don't have TTS, those that do are probably also going to go the way of bluetooth. So buy another old KK or Touch while you can.

I looked up the Boyue ereader and the feature that nixed it for me was that it needed to be recharged after only 11 hours. I only charge ereaders once or twice a month. This would need nearly a daily charge. Otherwise, I agree, has some good features. I do like the larger page size.

I feel like I am part of a very small group who cares about having speakers. I think the Boox Note has them, if I'm not mistaken, and that device ticked most of my preferences except the amber light option.

The Boyue I bought a few years back is the T62+ which has a 6" screen and no comfort light or speakers... but its frontlight is extremely even and it was only around 100 dollars which was very inexpensive back then for those specs. When I first got it the battery life was poor even though it has a large battery, probably because the operating system hadn't yet been optimized for an eReader. Fortunately after the firmware was updated the battery life improved tremendously and I only have to charge it every couple weeks. I wonder if the current Boyue model is having a similar issue and will improve with a firmware update? I haven't looked at the features of current models lately because it always leaves me frustrated.

Would not be surprised to learn that Amazon is ok falling behind in categories that they think they dominate.

Yes, I did pre-order. :) I have an ancient Fire that I reserve for color books and comics, but the Paperwhite I currently have is my #1 reading device for e-books. I'm a huge bathtub reader and I almost went for the Oasis a few times, but there was a lot holding me back from splurging on that, so this as an upgrade for me makes perfect sense. Since I subscribe to Unlimited and this will give me six months free of it, it helps with making up some of the cost that way as well.

Still, I realize upgrading doesn't make sense for everyone if this new release doesn't have features that work for the person. I didn't expect Waterproof so that was a surprise.

I'm also a little wary of the asymmetrical case and wish it had buttons on each side. Do you know how the Kobo firmware compares to Kindle? Does it have nice dictionary integration? Anything like X-ray? I do like that it can be purchased at Walmart in case I get one with a bad screen or something and have to return it.

I've had a Kobo for a few years. But have only played a little with relatives Kindles.

Kobo's software is very customizable. Lots of people like it out of the box, but if there's something you don't like, it can most likely be tweaked.

Kobo uses something called Font Genius that gives control that is superior to Kindle. Font size, line spacing and margins are handled with sliders rather than preassigned set points like Kindle.

The dictionary function is about the same for both. You highlight a word and choose a dictionary definition. However, Kindle's dictionary (The Oxford Dictionary of English) is top of the line. Kobo's dictionary (I forget which one it uses) has worked fine for me when I've needed it, but even the most ardent Kobo fan will admit Kindle has a better dictionary.

No. The do have (or had?) a feature called Beyond the Book, but it doesn't work with sideloaded books (though neither does X-Ray). All my books are sideloaded, so I wouldn't be able to use either.

I miss the kindle keyboard with its dual (!) speakers and TTS. It's sad that the new kindles have a much better TTS voice but no TTS interface. You have to use the Voice view feature which is really a screen reader meant for the blind. I tried using voice view a couple of times but it was so clunky I couldn't be bothered.

I mostly followed along even though it was reading to me. (Immersive reading?) At any rate, I don't use the feature much, but I like that it's there.

Meant to add ... also agree with your assessment of Voice View. It's kind of clunky for those who can see. I can understand, however, why it would great for the blind. But it does let you listen to non-TTS enabled books.

Totally agree. The ability to easily manage collections, IMHO, gives Kobo the nod over Kindle. And I've had/used many versions of both ereaders and I find that I keep coming back to Kobo specifically for/because of the collections management ease of use.

Thank you for reminding me of another issue that frustrated me when I tried the Paperwhite a couple years ago. I hated the limited font options. I remember adding a FONT_RAMP file for additional font sizes, but that only worked with books in the AZW3 format.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone in wishing for speakers again. It's unfortunate we can't take advantage of the much better TTS voice on the newer models. Is there anyway to update the TTS voice on the Kindle Keyboard? (Without jailbreaking?)

I believe Kobo (and Nook) both use the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (for English). (At least my Nook Simple Touch and Kobo Touch use it.) But, unlike the Nook, the Kobo doesn't give you synonyms or word origins. So the NST is more complete.

Yeah, not disputing whether it's a better dictionary -- just that I don't notice myself. I was saying this may very well be because on Kobo you can do a Google search (or search Wikipedia, or search within the book) for the highlighted word(s) if the dictionary entry leaves you wanting to know more. And I miss that when I'm reading on my Kindle.

Yeah, true "bottom-end" (properly, entry-level) ereaders are, like the Basic Kindle, purely reflective, SVGA, without backlight or maybe touch.

The Paperwhite line is really a mid-range reader, following the classic marketing rules of Good--better--best.

On the Kindle side this is easily seen as (Basic) Kindle--Paperwhite--Oasis.
On the Kobo side it's Clara--Aura--Forma.
Pocketbook it's Basic, Lux, Touch, etc.

What might be confusing people is that Kobo's "entry level" Clara is configured like a Paperwhite as their sales volumes can't really support a true entry level reader like Amazon's, Pocketbook, and most of the european vendors. Instead, their strategy is to offer added features at higher prices and defining their midrange and premium models by size. It's a good approach for smaller vendors...
...with the downside that they are effectively surrendering the true entry level, which impacts their bookstore and publisher appeal.

(shrug)

Kobo has bigger competitive issues than a lack of a US$50 reader for newcomers and gifting.
Mainstream visibility and partner reliability among them.

I'm never going to buy this formula, because it's still basically a straight line of size that says, bigger is better, and biggest is, ipso facto, best. I think of it more as covering different marketing niches. Try sticking an 8-inch reader in your pocket. For me, if readers offer similar features and differ only in screen size, then they are of equivalent quality, just in different categories.

And as a Kobo user who is unlikely to move to Kindle, I have to say good on Amazon. The new Paperwhite looks like a very nice upgrade in my opinion. 1743Either way, Kobo used to produce entry level ereaders until not long ago. My bet is that they simply decided that diversifying their offer based on screen size would make them more competitive with Amazon than trying to compete on a device-to-device basis. Amazon were forced to adapt not long ago, so I assume that must have worked.

For Kobo, the 'basic' reader would be the Aura 2nd Edition.

Same here. And I like page turn buttons. If I can "train" my eyes to like front-lit eReaders, the Nook Glowlight 3 would still probably be my first choice. I don't care that much about the infrastructure or store (with Calibre it's really not that big of a deal) and I only usually carry 20 (or so) books on a reader at a time, so the shelf issue is not that big of a deal to me. So long as the reading software (itself) works pretty well, I think I would be happy. All reports seem to indicate that the Glowlight 3's screen (itself) is pretty nice.

Yes, it's new.
So are the DX's that Amazon itself coughs up from time to time.
Those aren't refurbs or third party sales.

You've been around a while so you know how these gadgets are built by China, Inc, right? They contract for a specific lot size, the assembly lines configured, and they crank them out. Then the assembly lines are configured for another product. Whatever were in that one run is usually *all* there ever will be unless the customer orders a second or third run.

Now, the Auras when were they introduced? At what price?
Who were they aimed at?
What manufacturing date do they carry?
If you order one today, will they say june 2018, june 2017, or even older?
The question is, why would Kobo intentionally undercut their brand new Clara model by ordering more of the older model to sell for just a few bucks less? As you said, who'd prefer an Aura to a Clara? If the price diferential were bigger it would make sense but it's not big enough.

Kobo seems like a well run company, unlike Nook, so the logical assumption is the Auras are the last of last year's has batch still useful, still desirable, but priced to move. They weren't *meant* to be entry level when they were built. They may be previously unsold but if they come from a lot built before the Clara, they're leftovers. Doesn't mean they're not good readers but there simply isn't enough difference between them and the Clara in features and especially in price. From a marketing standpoint they overlap too much because they were both designed for the same customer.

Now, the basic Kindle might be leftovers, but there have been several instances since 2016, when it has gone out of stock at Amazon, sparking rumors of a new model, but a few weeks later another slow boat from China docks and the Basic Kindle is back in stock, just in time for the next big sale. Amazon sees no reason to launch a new design for the entry level. They really have little competition in the $50-80 price point. And there is plenty of design difference to justify the price jump from the Basic Kindle to the PW, which is what good marketing prefers.

Edit: Mind you, this is just marketing talk.
I have no problem buying closeouts or refurbs. Buying last year tech is a good money saving strategy for consumers. Like buying TVs in the spring after the new models have been announced but before they show up. Easy to find good deals that way.

I get your main point, but I don't think there's been a Kindle DX (sold by Amazon) in three or four years. I can still buy an Aura (Edition 2) from Kobo (or even down the street at Walmart and pick it up today). I know there hasn't been a Sony Personal Reader (PRS) sold by Sony in at least four (probably five) years. So whether it's the last half of a boatload of Auras, or new batch, it's immaterial they're still new, they still have full warranties and they're still being sold by Kobo. Ditto with Kindle Basics (Gen 8) or Voyages. If they're still in their lineup, they're still in their lineup. (Like the Kindle Touch was for a couple years after the first Paperwhite came out.)

As it stands, at $99 (via Walmart) the Aura is closer to the Kindle Basic as "low end." The Paperwhite, Glowlight 3 and Clara are mid-range. The Forma, Oasis, Voyage Aura One, Aura H20 are at various levels of high end. Maybe the Voyage and H20 could be thought of as "upper middle class" though the Voyage was once Kindle's high-end. In the Tolino, you have the Page (low-end, competes with the Kindle Basic), the Shine 3, competes with the Clara, Paperwhite and Glowlight 3 the Vision 4, competes with the Voyage and H20 and the Epos, which would be their high end (Oasis, Forma and Aura One). Of course nothing fits exactly, but $130 for the Paperwhite 4 is not out of range ... unless you want to get into the $20 to remove ads which, for those who must removes ads, is an important consideration.

I'm rambling. Sorry.

I have used it several times too. I read a lot of series (mostly fantasy and sf) and sometimes I need to refresh my memory about a character or a place first mentioned in an earlier book. It would not be particularly useful when reading about characters or places with contemporary names (it's pretty pointless to search the entire library for John or Will or London or Paris :D), but it works well with fantasy names, and sometimes with historical fiction too.

Not a problem.
Clean exchanges are fun.

About the Basic Kindle, try this:

If a product spends two thirds of its time selling at price A and a third of the time selling at Price B, you would be inclined to say its real world price (rather than list) is A. But if the product actually sells 60-70% of its units at Price B, wouldn't its real world price be closer to B than to A? Especially when the "promotional" Price B shows up at predictable times?

Amazon is a fun outfit to watch because they're tricky and play all sorts of games, especially with pricing. Everybody knows they practice variable pricing yet few actually consider what it means. For the Kindle Basic it means they can legally get away with claiming the $50 price is a sale price and the $80-100 price is the "regular" price while most of the sales come at the lower point. There's few knowledgeable folk that would even try to argue that a Kindle Basic at $80 is a fair value. But then, knowledgeable folk know to wait for one of the regularly scheduled sales so Amazon gets to eat their cake and have it too. The unwary/price-insensitive pay the higher price. Those that do their homework will find the reviews that say "wait for the sale". And they get away with it because there is no competition at either price point because there isn't much profit in selling ereader hardware at those prices. Maybe $5 if the teardown estimates can be trusted.

But $5 is $5 and their main goal isn't just to make money off the hardware but to entice readers into their ecosystem. And once they do that they get to sell books, videos, subscriptions of all kinds. Or dry goods. Which is the purpose of the ads. If they get even one click through a year, they're home free. And typically they do better than that.

It's what makes them so effective: they're upfront and low key.
You know they want to sell you stuff. And sooner or later, you'll want to buy stuff. :)

Or not.
But there's plenty of folk that do. And their entry level products like Basic Kindle, Echo Dot, AmazonBasics cables and batteries, are all part of the ecosystem draw.

Looking at individual items in a vacuum doesn't tell the whole story; there's always something else. Like: entry level the Basic Kindle may be, but it supports Audible. So it's not just an ebook storefront; it also sell audiobooks. And ebook/audiobook bundles.

To some people that matters.
To Amazon it does: the basic got the feature before Paperwhite.

And with my 85 yr old Dad. We'd introduced him to Kindle via the app on his tablet, but it's lack of bezels made reading on the app very awkward for him. He's spending many hours a day immersed in his (formerly my) PW.

I don't think Amazon managed it, they simply thus declared it so. The only $10 price increase compared to the old PW does not justify the upgrades. But making it a tiny bit more expensive shows that the PW is a different reader now. Amazon is again competing with price to undercut competitors.

Soon the features of the PW4 is going to be the mainstream 6" reader and others have to match it. The Clara 2 when it comes out next year will have to add water proofing to stay competetive with the PW. Amazon OTOH can sell their readers without color changing leds, because non of their premium readers ever had them. Kobo cannot afford to introduce the next reader without color changing leds, because they promoted them as necessary.

PW4 is a Voyage with a smaller profit margin. Hardware wise the missing buttons and light sensor probably save enough money to add waterproofing. Realistically it should be more expensive. Add in the plastic screen substrate, and you have Kobo Forma top end model feature in an entry level lighted reader. That is also an upgrade from the Voyage with glass substrate.

The briefing included one-on-one sessions with Amazon reps following the presentation. Perhaps it was something the reporter specifically asked about in his. He seems more knowledgeable than most of the initial reporting (at least knows there is something called ‘Mobius’). Of course he could have misunderstood what the rep told him, or the rep may have misrepresented the facts. At any rate, I would give it the benefit of doubt for now.

In the end the only thing that matters is how damage resistant it turns out to be in the real world, and we’ll have to wait for evidence of that. Mobius is not the only way to achieve damage-resistance, and Amazon certainly has the resources and clout with eInk to pursue solutions that meet their specific requirements. A custom solution that is better in some key ways than Mobius (cheaper to manufacture, or better display quality) would be a competitive advantage, as it would not be something eInk could turn around and offer to Amazon’s competitors.

I am less concerned about damage resistance (I can well believe it is a significant improvement over the Paperwhite it replaces in the lineup) than the visual qualities: is it going to be as good or better than my Voyage?

Mobius was designed to be flexible. When it was introduced it was very expensive due to very low yield rates, it may still be very expensive. If all you want is shatter resistance, being flexible is overkill, IMO. A very stiff plastic (maybe acrylic stiff) would perhaps do the trick of reasonable compromise of yield, shatter proof, image quality, and cost.

Yep, I'm sure the review was. But the reviewer should have updated the Kobo review when he/she updated the Kindle review. (After all they're showing a picture of the Kobo Clara, not an old Kobo.) Borrowing from Overdrive is not "seamless" on the Kindle -- it (basically) requires another device to do the borrowing. Kobos truly are seamless here.

That doesn't sound like "seamless" to me - how many Kindle users actually use the browser? It's basically "in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard." in terms of accessibility. And of course, not universally available even then - no Overdrive here at all on Kindle, unless it's een added in the last few weeks

It's obvious that the Aura will be discontinued once they run out of stock; this is the flip side of what happened when they introduced the Aura for $10 less than the Glo HD. The Aura was never worth only $10 less than either the Glo HD or the Clara. I can't imagine that even Walmart's $99 price on the Aura will get rid of them. On the other hand, I can't get what's going on with the Aura One and the Forma. They seem in direct competition to me and the Aura One is significantly cheaper. At two years old with no update, that one has to be the next for the chopper and then Kobo will have one top-of-the-line product similarly priced to the smaller Oasis.

The single device that jumps out at me from this list is the H2O. It has no direct competition at Amazon price-wise and at virtually the same size as the Oasis which costs $90 more, I think it's a tremendous value.

When you line up the two product lines it seems like Kobo all the way to me, but I may be biased. ;) The reality is that most Americans, if they've got a Kindle, won't switch to Kobo even for more specs at a similar outlay. I think the Walmart association is disastrous to Kobo's attempts to penetrate the American market.

Use one of the search engines and search for "Kobo Clara" (without the quotes) and click on the link which says something about "kobobooks." Once you get to the page for one of these models, there are links on top for the other current models. It's stupid that you have to do it, but it works. (This is also how I find the "sold out" listing for the Clara on Walmart.com.)

Just tried this on my iPad. Very ugly and not what should be expected.

But, I get different behaviour depending on whether I have the iPad in landscape or portrait orientation. In landscape, the menu behaves as you described. In portrait, the menu works completely differently. The menu is in the top left corner. And it works properly. It's probably actually a screen size/resolution thing. On my much smaller phone, it always uses the menu in the top-left corner. On my PC, as make the browser narrower, the layout of the page change and it changes to the menu in the top-left corner.

I'm pretty sure the browser will behave about the same. It is slow and doesn't support all features more advance browsers do. You can download books from most places, but, navigating to the page is a pain. I only use it to test and see if it actually works,

very strange - so on a sample of 3, it does not work for 2 of us, but it does for one person.

maybe it depends on android version or some other subtlety but I can't think how
i will try it one more time with chrome data saver enabled, as that will then serve from an intermediate server....

well the plot thickens - with data saver ON, AND portrait mode, that elusive menu moves off the home page to under a single hamburger on the left ,which expands ok.
in portrait with data server off the hamburger does NOT expand
and back in landscape- sometime the sub menus show briefly but are not accessible, other times they don't show at all

ther must be some background calculation of windows size and orientation which toggles between 2 different presentations. one has the horizontal menu with 4 entire as listed before, the narrow veiw moves those off screen and under a single drop down that is not using the same screen overlay/pop up technique. I can't be bothered to go to display source & puzzle out all the options

and a final caveat, the site somehow knows I am in UK and is serving a UK version, I have no idea what folks in other regions may see...

i will just concluded that if you want to buy a kobo reader from kobo via a tablet, you have to be VERY motivated and persistent :)

Which version of the menu did it use? The menu icon in the top-left corner? Or the separate options under the search bar? In any case, it appears to be affected by the window/screen width. As I stated, when I tried it on my PC at work (Linux with Firefox), at my usual browser window size, it used the second version with the menu below the search bar. As I made the window narrower, it reached a point were it changed. Trying this now at home on my Windows laptop, it works the same with both Firefox and Chrome.

It is obviously dependent on the setup. It might also depend on the browser and OS. I reported what happens with an Android phone, but I don't have an Android device with a large enough screen to see if it how it behaves.

Hmmm, no problems for me on my Android phone with Chrome browser in the US. I do have to wait for the entire page to load before I can tap open the menu. But after that, it behaves as expected in both portrait and landscape.

ETA: Just tried on my iPad with Chrome. Works fine in portrait from the upper-left menu icon. In landscape, I get the dropdown menus under the search bar that disappear too quickly to use.

Yet another edit to avoid more OT posts:
Looks like the horizontal menus are expecting a mouse hover to stay open...which, of course, you never have on an iPad and very seldom on Android. Even trying to tap with an Apple pencil doesn't work on iPad. But works with a mouse on my 10" Android tablet.

could be that the problem is limited to larger android tablets then, mine is 10 inch and i use it in landscape.

it is still poor QA though

in particular, the "widescreen version" of the home page, with the horizontal row of menu tabs is using some clever overlay/pop up/floating menu code, too smart for its own good.
I did not bother to test searching for a specific book title or author, it could be that suffers from over clever presentation also.

I think people are getting mixed up between the substrate and the screen. Up until the Kobo Forma, all the main ereaders have had a glass substrate that sits behind a plastic screen - except the Voyage, which has a glass screen, which at the time of release was an 'upgrade' & a selling point, it appears to make the text on the Voyage sharper & clearer. Even though the new Paperwhite has a flush screen and looks similar to the Voyage, it might not be quite so good because of this.

The plastic substrate of the Kobo Forma is obviously a selling point, so if the new Paperwhite had the same, why on earth would the only mention of it be in a random news article?

FWIW, the respective pages for the Kobo Forma & Kindle Paperwhite state:

Thread Title: My chat with Amazon about the new PW

Me: Can you please tell me if there are plans to release a kindle paper white with a comfort light (Change color temperature) in the works? I noticed the new one does not have it. Why no include it? I will never buy another kindle with out this feature. Please tell someone.
You are now connected to Dalli Ravi Teja from Amazon.com

Dalli Ravi Teja: Hello, my name is Dalli Ravi Teja. I'm here to help you today.
The new one has a color invert option.

Me: so white on black?

Dalli Ravi Teja: Yes.

Me: that info should be on the description page
Thats fine but its still blue light?

Dalli Ravi Teja: It would be available for all the compatible model s once an update is rolled out.

Me: I have a kobo and I use that at night because the blue light from the kindle bothers me

Dalli Ravi Teja: Yes, I understand what you are asking.
You would like a reading mode on the device,
I am updating this to the feedback team. They collate all the feedback that we receive and work on it to develop a feature in the upcoming software update.

Me: Can I ask specifically why Amazon has not released a model with the ability the change the color temperature? It seems absurd to me they haven't done it. Many of the competitor devices have it. The Kindle would be the best in my opinion if it had that feature and relaxed on the kindle only books and those advertisements.

Dalli Ravi Teja: I am from the support team. I do not have that information.
I can remove the ads from your device free of charge.

Me: Im sure they have received tons of requests about the color temperature change feature, because I know I am not the only one. How and who do I contact on the Kindle engineering department directly to get a real answer?
Really? Removing the ads would be awesome. I know I can go to Amazon to buy stuff.

Dalli Ravi Teja: Sure, I can do that for you.

Me: Cool

Dalli Ravi Teja: Shall I go ahead and remove the ads now?

Me: Sure, on the 3G that'd be appreciated.

Dalli Ravi Teja: Okay, just a moment.
This device has successfully unsubscribed from Special Offers.
Please check now.

Me: Also, the inverted colors are good, but suppose Amazon came out with its own gels to change the color temperature? This option would obviously not be ideal, but why release a new kindle without the temp change. I don't get it. Behind the times
I'll check... thank s

Dalli Ravi Teja: Sure, I agree with you.

Me: Thats great to hear

Dalli Ravi Teja: I respect your point of view. But those matters are out of my purview.

Me: Weird marketing in my opinion

Dalli Ravi Teja: I can update this to the concerned team.

Me: Just give the people what they want, make it well from the start and sell it forever
Incrementally releasing 'new' features is ridiculous

Dalli Ravi Teja: As there is no direct chat with the engineering team. We are the support team so we face the customers.

Me: In my opinion

Dalli Ravi Teja: Okay, sure.

Me: The offers are gone, appreciate it

Dalli Ravi Teja: Thank you :)

Me: Thats all I got at the moment thank you.

The difference is that on the PC, the menu reacts and expands when you put the cursor over it, but doesn't trigger the link. You can then select the sub-item you want. On a touch-only device, you have to tap the menu item to have it expand the menu. But, tapping the menu item also triggers the link it points to and once that happens, the sub-items cannot tapped.

Overall, not a great design. And it is also something that I can understand being missed during testing. They probably do most of the widescreen version testing on a PC and concentrate on the portrait version on the devices.

No comfort light, but it's interesting that Amazon plans to use a reverse screen on all compatible models with a future update. (I'm guessing that won't include the Kindle Basic.) Also interesting to see how quickly they offered to remove ads for free. Does that happen often?

You were basically harassing the same person who tells you how many Skittles are left in stock. In fact the Kindle team will likely never see your concern (if that was your intention), because they're not going to read the whole exchange.

It won't be completely shatterproof if the top glass layer is similiar to the Voyage. I have two busted Voyages laying around. One has broken top and substrate (got stepped on). The other has substrate intact, but the top glass is a tiny bit cracked at a corner which destroyed touch functionality (this one the dog chewed on the case with Voyage inside).

That is just a guess on my part. It looks too much like a Voyage without buttons. My PW3 doesn't look very good in sunlight compared to the Oasis 2. The plastic screen with the texture casts shadows making the background look grainy. The smooth glass screen of the Oasis makes the background look uniform and much brighter.

ETA: In chat with CS today I asked if the front of the screen is glass similiar to the Voyage and Oasis, and got told that, yes, it is the same. Take that also with a grain of salt until we do have a real teardown.

I'm only going by what that one article, in PC Magazine, claimed. They specifically compared this feature to Mobius. ("Amazon is using a plastic-backed 300ppi E Ink display, but it isn't E Ink Mobius; it's the company's own design.") Whether it's true or not, I don't know, but it is a direct and specific claim.

EDIT: DuckieTigger wrote to the article's writer for confirmation. I admit, it is hard to believe that Amazon isn't making a bigger deal out of this — unless most tech writer's involved just missed the importance of the announcement.

I'll ask again, if that was the case, why does it state on the Paperwhite tech details of the screen that its: "Amazon's 6” Paperwhite-display technology with E Ink Carta, built-in light, 300 ppi, optimised font technology and 16-level grey scale".

Which is pretty much word for word what it states on the Oasis tech details: "Amazon’s 7 inch Paperwhite display technology with E Ink Carta™ and built-in light, 300 ppi, optimised font technology, 16-level grey scale".

*Not exactly sure why all the eink Kindles say Paperwhite display technology mind you, even the basic one!

No mention of anything different, it specifically states its a Carta e-ink display. It would be good if true, and it is strangely specific claim by that journalist, but just can't see it since Amazon themselves isn't saying it, and not a single other person picked up on this snippet.

Ok but the Kobo lists the Forma with a "with a sturdy 8.0” HD Mobius Carta E Ink screen"

Albeit, I have just realised in the specs it just states Carta. Still seems very unlikely that Amazon would fail to mention this anywhere if it had a plastic substrate.

Also, am I mistaken that I thought I read somewhere that they think the new PW has a glass front screen the same as the Voyage & Oasis? It would appear to be very good value for money if this was true.

My theory still stands that mentioning it might be a mistake for warranty reasons. Look, it is sturdier, I can handle it rougher. Oops. And there is a slight chance that Amazon put the plastic substrate in purely as cost saving to reduce the warranty issues with broken substrate. Not always is a new feature for the benefit of the customer. They do advertise reduced weight.

That information came from me in this thread and another thread. I was told that by CS in chat. So take that with a grain of salt until someone outside of Amazon has a new PW in hand.

I wonder if the extended warranty on the Paperwhite might be a glue. I priced the 4G model at $230 and for an extra $30 they offered a 3 year extended warranty with accident coverage and said you could drop your device and have it replaced 3 times. That's extremely cheap and very generous coverage. They must have a lot of confidence in it's durability.

Thread Title: finally pulled the trigger on the new pw4

i placed and cancelled my order at least 3 times trying to decide if it was a worthwhile purchase for me. i have the oasis 2 and it's nice, but far from ideal in several areas. i traded in the smaller original oasis on it and many times i wish i had that tiny one back. but i won't go into a list of my annoyances.

the amazon kindle software is horrible for searching and storing your content if you have over several hundred books--to say it's a hot mess is to be cruel to hot messes. long ago i was trying to manage about 2500 books using the docs feature and i finally gave that up as a bad business. and manually placing books onto the kindle memory offends my organizational skills and it annoys me no end that it's so difficult to change the titles using calibre by mucking around with the metadata.

so what i've done with the oasis is allow it to store some of the books i've bought on amazon which it helpfully lists under /books/. and i have about 300 books i've put on it using the /docs/ feature. when i first bought it i tried to put my 2500 books on it, and it was still thrashing around a week later trying to index them all and that's when i just put selected books into the /docs/ process.

so what i'm getting the pw4 for is to make another try at storing my entire library which annoyingly, comes in at just over 8gb after it's transferred to kindle so i had to pay an extra $30 for the 32gb model. and i suspect it will be more trouble than it's worth to juggle two kindles--one a 'clean' one and the other one with everything but the kitchen sink on it.

anyway, they didn't sell out of them up until the last hour before i could have gotten it on the 7th--at least not that configuration (32gb, offers, wifi-only), but they did sell out of nearly every fabric and leather cover for it. i ended up getting the bundle because i wanted the merlot leather cover, but resented paying the extra for the worthless charger. i'm alway a kindle unlimited subscriber so i'm hoping the six-month sub offer applies to existing accounts.

hopefully the calibre coder knows it's coming and will quickly issue an update so i can move all my books to it, but it's ok since it'll give me a couple days to see how it works with my 80 amazon books and the 300 docs first before i throw everything at it. i'll just plan to leave it on the charger for a day or two for it to index and check every 2-4 hours for progress.

gteague don't just 'throw everything at it' by loading all your books in one go and instead try loading them in smaller batches (maybe 50 at most?), and give it time to index the books first before adding more. A rogue book can cause the Kindle to get stuck indexing, and if you just chuck more books at it when this happens, it'll just keep 'thrashing around' unless you identify which book is causing the problem and remove it.
