491not be alone. Your incarnations will have the help of bizaroid characters that

493We made Oquonie while living in Japan. The game was our first collaborative
494project as Hundred Rabbits, and a reflection of our experience navigating a new
495country, with language as a recurent obstacle. Oquonie is about being lost in a
496foreign space.
497A big inspiration for this project was the short story "A town without streets"
498by Junji Ito, about a city of endless interconnecting houses and rooms, where
499privacy is non-existent. To preserve the little privacy they do have, the
500townspeople wear masks.
501Back in 2013, we both had full-time jobs in different studios in Tokyo, we
502worked on Oquonie after work, and on weekends, for a total of 6 months. You can

1990To win against your opponent, locate a patch of mushrooms and connect nodes to
1991it — this is your cannon. It needs a minimum amount of power to be able to fire,

2991I have aligned my life toward a singular design, the acceleration of Arts &

2993The analysis of personal statistics recorded through daily journaling, revealed
2994travel to convert into the most inspiration hours. I have then steered my
2995creative work toward facilitating opportunities to travel.
2996Multi-tasking revealed itself to have a negative impact on my productivity.

2998of lesser creativity and intermittent productivity. Living at any one place over

3008better output, against acting impulsively and making possible accidental steps

3010I have kept journals recording oscillation in flux of Efficiency and
3011Effectiveness, and used this data to optimize and steer moods of productivity.
3012Each day has a singular task assigned, connected to a specific medium, suggested
3013from previous optimal patterns of productivity.
3014When a day ends before its task was completed, the day was a planning failure;
3015and the task is broken down into smaller tasks, each assigned to one day. When
3016the task is completed before mid-day, the day is also a planning failure.
3017I do not get out of bed until I have chosen a task to complete & and a lesson to
3018learn, and I do not go to sleep until I have logged the results. The tasks are
3019selected in the following order: I first address the problems that slow me down,
3020the things I find lacking in life and the answers to questions that occupy the

3029My first encounter with a Nomad was during my stay in Prague, as Santiago, I had
3030just met my Fulcanelli.
3031There was a time in my life when I may have felt homesick. But for now, Home was
3032but a vague concept that existed out there, forever fleeting.
3033An office is no place a multi-disciplinarist, and Japan was where I last fought
3034this loosing battle. My desk, not the medium onto which I would acquire the
3035skills I longed for.
3036The suffocating curiousity of wanting to know how different my life might be,
3037had gotten worse than the daily frictions of my current situation. The decision
3038of living aboard a float home was not picked amongst other equally enticing
3039ideas, for it was, at the time, the only solution that would align with what I
3040wanted in life.
3041The monthly rent of our beachside Tokyo appartment was of about 1.5K$, and
3042transitioning from it, to a sailboat, implicated some serious downsizing. The
3043way we looked at it was that, within 3 years, our 20K$ sailboat would be paid at
3044the rate of 600$ per month — Or that by cutting the costs of our current living
3045situation in half, we could be both "home owners" and keep our traveling options
3046open.
3047Will you trade the proximity to friends and family in exchange for your
3048independence?
3049To think that, at the time, the most heart-breaking things to let go of were
3050instruments, old consoles, books and some camera equipment — When the truly hard
3051things to let go of would be the habitual bath, tap water and reliable internet
3052connection.
3053Everything costs more than expected, takes longer than expected and Amazon
3054doesn't deliver to your desert island. Surely you did not do all this travel for
3055the travel alone, you had passions, habits and goals when you left.
3056The wind rocks the habitat sideways, keeping you up at night. But at least, you
3057get to spend your day writing. You forget about tap water, don't mind the warm
3058water from the plastic jugs, you wonder why people take showers every day, and
3059time away from social networks really does make you feel better.
3060Being nomad is trading the things you think you care about, for things you
3061didn't know existed.
3062Suddenly, it's business as usual. You get back to building things, only now,
3063when you look outside, the upmost gorgeous sunset precedes the darkest of night.
3064You learnt how to fix sails, repair a toilet, create electronic systems,
3065maintain an engine — Even to live without a fridge and power.
3066We have seen every sunset and almost every sunrise, we have sailed with
3067dolphins, we have climbed mountains on desert islands, and we have met the most
3068amazing people.

3076The function of proteins is to be used for tissue growth and repair, but when
3077carbohydrates and calories are lacking, proteins can be consumed for fuel.
3078The human body's own proteins are constantly being broken down into amino acids
3079and used throughout its systems.
3080The human body is mostly made of proteins, and proteins are made of amino acids
3081- permutations of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sometimes sulphur.
3082There are 22 amino acids in total and all but 9 can be synthesized, the
3083Essential Amino Acids.
3084To be used for growth and repair, a protein needs have access to the full
3085sequence of required essential amino acids. If an essential amino acid is
3086missing, the unusable remaining amino acids are broken down into fats or sugars.
3087Examples of foods with essential amino acid content of at least 70% of a
3088complete protein(see Limiting Amino Acids) are oats, garbanzo beans, sunflower
3089seeds, buckwheat, red/white/black beans, rice, peanuts and pumpkin seeds.

3092There are also high-quality proteins in green beans, swiss chard, broccoli,

3112A typical day usually begins at around 6:00am.
3113I tend to try and keep my eyes shut until I have mentally drafted a rough plan
3114of the things I will want to have done by the end of that day. I then rise to
3115grind coffee — I usually ever only drink one cup per day.
3116Before even email or chat, I immediately set off to complete the task I have
3117planned eye-closedly. I know to have about 3 hours of undisturbed flow before
3118the distraction surrounding lunch-time pulls me away from the work. My daily
3119goal is to complete, at least, single task a day, the daily task is devised in a
3120way that it should take about 3 hours to complete — Or between 4 to 5 pomodoros.
3121After the last pomodoro, I tend to cook. I try as much as possible to take a
3122full hour for lunch, to try and exit the state of flow. The afternoon is spent
3123doing maintenance or superficial work, experiments. But mostly, the afternoon is
3124spent reading and learning. The goal is to build a catalog of exciting things to
3125wake up to the next day and to experiment with.
3126The superficial work that I do involves replies to blogs, maintenance to the
3127repositories that I collaborate on, edits to various wikipedia entries,
3128answering emails and so on..
3129The day ends with journaling at which point I record the task done, and if any,
3130the lessons learnt. I usually go to sleep with a book, and a highlighter pen. I
3131overline the things I want to keep for a later use, or to revisit.

3140In an age of disposable smart devices and unrepairable electronics, there are
3141few topics that occupy my mind as much as solutioning for technological
3142resilience and development longtermism.
3143Living aboard a sailboat, away from reliable internet connectivity and outside
3144of delivery networks, encourages us at Hundred Rabbits, to consider ways in
3145which we can strenghten the toolset onto which we rely, to reflect on novel ways
3146to simplify the systems that we use, and to optimize toward more environmentally
3147councious practices.
3148We must abandon 3-in-1 packages, bloated always-online services and general
3149planned obsolesce, and establish practices of recyclism, minimum viable
3150products, small-sharp modular utilities. We see smart and resilience as opposing
3151attributes to a device, smart is inherantly contrary to a single purpose tool,
3152and thus incompatible with longtermism.
3153Our focus over the past year has gradually shifted from open-source software,
3154toward modular and combinable electronics. Looking back, we are proud of the
3155open-source tools that we created, enabling a handful of people to exit
3156subscription services, and uninspectable utilities. Moving forward, we are
3157thinking more and more about hardware, or at least to do without the operating
3158system layer.
3159I periodically find myself thinking about operating systems, or more
3160specifically the interaction design of OSes. I attempting to tackle the
3161difficult UX challenges of that space, unrealizing that my failure to solve
3162these issues might very well come from the simple fact that the purpose of
3163operating systems is to enable multi-tasking, multi-tasking that I try to
3164erradicate from my daily life, making these these issues deeply unsolvable and
3165my love for sharp tools and OSes ireconcilable.
3166Sometimes I wonder if we shouldn't re-orient our focus onto things that can run
3167on small low-power open-source boards like Arduinos, but I also consider the
3168impact of pushing for the purchase and production more electronics.
3169Despite all this, I dream of a line of simple electronics, each one designed for
3170a single purpose. Or even for things beyond the realm of electronics, like a kit
3171bike with all its superfluousities removed.
3172My dream sailboat has no diesel engine, no fuel outboard and no lead acid
3173battery storage, but instead a compressed air engine with its compression stored
3174in diving tanks, a bike crank powered compressor, a hydro generator pump, and a
3175dynamo to charge our low-power electronics. The only crutial electronic systems
3176connected to the house tanks would be the AIS transciver, the VHF radio, a basic
3177chartplotter and habitat lighting. Our work and entertainment electronics, like
3178our laptops and cameras, would run off solar charging a minimal array of LiPo
3179batteries.
3180Is there a way to distribute entertainment in a way that is environmentally
3181conscious? I read this thinking, how dare I think that only work has value and
3182that entertainment and leisure has somehow less right to pollute.

3412What inspired you to play music?
3413I stumbled on the idea of writing my own music at a chiptune concert, I realized
3414at that moment that I could write music with non-traditional and custom-made
3415instruments.
3416When were you first introduced to chiptune music?
3417At the Gamma Festival in Montreal, Bubblyfish was the first performing chiptune
3418act that I ever saw.
3419What kind of music do you play and why?
3420I tend to navigate the space between ambient and industrial music, I write
3421starkly contrasted rhythmic music as I find it best to describe the environments
3422visited in the songs.
3423What themes are you trying to uncover in your music?
3424Most of the music I write as Aliceffekt is about a character's travels across
3425the frigid scapes of this fictional world called the Neauismetica, on this
3426foreign planet called Dinaisth.
3427Why did you decide to accompany your music with visuals?
3428The visuals came first, and I wrote the music to accompany the drawings. So the
3429music merely accompany the visuals.
3430Do you have a set of tracks you play regularly?
3431I tend to write music for specific events that occur in the Neauismetica, and
3432when I perform live, I pick moments which best fit with the other performers.
3433What is your approach when you perform live?
3434It depends, sometimes it's improvisational, like the Telekinetic show. Or
3435sometimes it's procedural, like the Ehrivevnv Studies, where I merely make sure
3436that everything is tuned properly. Sometimes I mix old songs and focus on
3437building interesting visuals if the venue allows for it. As of late, I have been
3438livecoding, where the song writing is done as a performance.
3439How do you approach songwriting?
3440I tend to write the song in my head entirely, and put it down in one setting. I
3441often write music about the Neauismetica, it's a kind of mental place, a pool of
3442endless musical idea I can visit and explore, it's where most of the songs come
3443from.
3444When performing live, what's your setup like?
3445It varies, I've written a couple of shows to be performed with a specific synth,
3446or a specific hardware like with the LeapMotion. Typically, I just use a
3447combination of midi controllers and livecoding.
3448What instruments do you play?
3449None. I'm not interested in the tactile aspect of music rendition, my love is
3450for composition and synthesis.
3451Where does the name Aliceffekt comes from?
3452Alice Effekt was a track by Drome that I liked a lot when I started writing
3453music. My goal was to write music just like it. But it has since evolved into
3454something else.

3462Which creative discipline did you begin with, and how did you shift to other
3463mediums?
3464At first, I stumbled onto photo manipulation. From DeviantArt, to Raster and to
3465Depthcore, I was moving from working with photos, to drawing, and eventually
3466modeling. While I enjoyed visual arts, I felt that to keep sharpening the
3467rendition of the worlds I was drawing, I needed to add a new dimension and so I
3468began writing soundtracks to the pictures, and eventually putting all of it
3469together in the form of websites, and games.
3470What is the meaning of the glyph in your avatar?
3471It is an old rendition of the character for blue, found in the the Shuowen
3472Jiezi, the character dictionary written by Xu Shen, 100 CE. This particular
3473glyph has probably never been used outside of paleography. I found it to be very
3474beautiful, and the word "blue" has a special meaning in the stories from which
3475my handle "neauoire" comes from.
3476What is the significance of your neck tattoo?
3477My tattoo is three dots in the shape of a triangle, or at an equal distance from
3478each other, it signifies audio, visual and research. I call this arrangement
3479"trisight", it's a reminder that, being a generalist, I must constantly pull
3480from these 3 mediums in order to create complete works.
3481Where does your name come from?
3482I began using the name online around 2005, Devine Lu Linvega comes from Davine
3483Lu Linvega of the series "Blame", by Tsutomu Nihei, which was very influential
3484to me at the time.
3485Why did you choose that name?
3486I had been looking for a name that did not represent who I was, but instead who
3487I would like to become. I wanted something that would serve as a reminder to put
3488curiousity above power, that did not lock myself in the past, but would force me
3489forward toward that ideal.
3490Who is Davine Lu Linvega in the book?
3491She was unique from other antagonists in that she doesn't seem to desire killing
3492humans, instead, she devotes her time and energy into finding a way to access an
3493hyper-evolved version of the Internet in the universe of BLAME. As seen in her
3494dying words, Davine was not motivated by a pursuit for power, but rather wanted
3495to see the Netsphere out of pure curiosity.

3503What are the most important concepts that you impart in your works?
3504A lot of my work deal with foreignness and adaptiveness, some of the most
3505romantic ideas that one will find in my work is that of explorers wandering the
3506remains of a long extinguished civilisation, and trying to make sense of it.
3507Why do you release free software?
3508Being away from accessible internet connectivity, the most practical mean for us
3509to develop and release projects is via the Bazaar Model, where the code is often
3510maintained by others while we are away, and so as to not capitalize unfairly on
3511all the help that we receive, we decided to only accept donations.
3512Why do you release open-source software?
3513Being incapable of sitting through a class back in high-school, most of the
3514learning that I was able to do was from looking at other people's sources and
3515trying to make sense of the way they think and understand the reasons for
3516solutioning in that particular way. For an ecosystem of tools to be truly
3517resilient, individuals must be able to repair, maintain and inspect the software
3518that they use.
3519Why is journaling important to you?
3520I keep records of everything I make, and everything I consume. The idea is to
3521better understand my creative patterns, and to predict changes in mood and
3522interest. Ultimately, the goal is to plan more efficiently, to spend my time

3531What is your background?
3532I was first interested in illustration and motion graphics. I soon started
3533writing music to complement these pictures, and finally I began implementing
3534interaction and turn these designs into games, websites and tools.

3536I work at a small research studio aboard a sailboat, called Hundred Rabbits,
3537where we do experiments in resilience and self-reliance using low-tech

3540The ways in which I spend my time varies wildly from day to day, but mostly
3541experimental research, my interests include alternative ways to store power and

3544I go to bed choosing one thing to accomplish the next day, I wake up to tackle
3545this singular task. I tend to work only in the morning, get everything done
3546before lunch. The afternoons, I spend mostly reading and learning things to help

3549Where do you go to get inspired?
3550I share a small forum with a few online friends and whenever I am looking for a
3551new favourite thing, or some help — I know I can find it there. Everyone should
3552build a small network, a place where they can feel comfortable to experiment,
3553show works-in-progress and exchange on the topics of art and science in a safe
3554place among like-minded people.
3555Why do you think people should travel more?
3556I found traveling to be a good catalyst toward learning new languages, for
3557developing an interest in foreign cultures and ultimately for building empathy,
3558curiosity and creativity.
3559How do you draw the line between what is published, and what stays private?

4105bolts and screws, while carefully putting them in that toolbox, gradually taking
4106the casing of the mechanism apart, leaving its core exposed.

4384Traverse-type words are meant to navigate a hierarchy, and are often used at the
4385beginning of a sentence. To be at a place, in Lietal, is made explicit with the
4386"ak" marker, like ak arodeti for "at school", and ok arodeti for "in school".

4388State-type words are meant to define the state of existence of something. Where
4389it will speak of the idea, or concept of a thing, at will speak of the shape of

4437I have formatted this guide to be a study tool prior to moving to Japan a few
4438years ago, it requires the knowledge to read Hiragana, Katakana and basic

4440Sentence Word Order
4441In general, the main verb is found at the end of the sentence. Subjects are
4442shown in grey as they are very often omitted. The preposition follows the noun,
4443it is more properly called a postposition(て、に、お、は). They are not independent
4444words but particles by which the case of nouns is determined.
4445I'm going to give a present to my teacher tomorrow at school.

4450Use は after the subject, if a new subject is introduced where another had been
4451previously understood. If a subject is understood, but for some reason not
4452deleted use が, or nothing.
4453Use に to indicate a specific points in time, a word like "tomorrow"(明日) can only
4454be understood by context and does not need the particle added. Like "In
4455October", or 十月に — or like "On March 3rd", or 三月三日に. Indirect objects are also
4456followed by に, similar to the english expression "to you", as seen in the
4457following sentence "I'm going to give this book to you.", or この本をあなたに上げる.
4458Use で after the place you do something or the thing you use to do something. For
4459example, "Going by car", is 車で行く.
4460Use を after a noun to declare an object, as seen in the following sentence "I'm
4461reading a book", or 本を読んでいる.
4462Use も to add extra info on top of what has already been declared, not unlike the
4463english word "too", as in "me too". For example, "I'm going too", is ぼくも行く.
4464Use の to indicate possession after an object, similarly to the english
4465possession particle "'s", as in "Alex's". For example, "This is my book" is
4466これはぼくの本です.
4467Use か at the end of a sentence to create a question, as in "What time is it?",
4468or 何時ですか? Or, between choices, each choice is also followed by か. As in "Today
4469or tomorrow?", or 今日か明日?
4470Use ね after a verb to create a sort of agreement with the listener, not unlike
4471the english expression "isn't?", in "It's fun isn't it?", or たのうしいですね.
4472Nouns
4473Nouns have no inflection to indicate singularity or plurality, for example, こども
4474means both child and children. When wishing to show the plural of a noun, an
4475indicator such as ーら、ーたち are attached, as in こどもたち, meaning children. Generally,
4476the plural distinction is not made, but is left to be understood from the
4477context.
4478Adjectives
4479Adjectives always end in あい, いい, うい or おい, never in えい that would be a noun.

4517There are some ーう verbs that end in ーる like ある(to be), おる(to break) and うる(to

4519If you see one that ends in ーいる or ーえる, and ーう changes to add ーます, or the "t"
4520doubles to get a gerund (入る「はいる」 > 入って「はいって」), then you're dealing with an ーう
4521verb.
4522Most books say that there are only two irregular verbs in all of Japanese: する
4523and 来る「くる」. Those you have to memorize separately, but they kind of make sense
