The game follows two protagonists, lifelong friends Alm and Celica, over the course of five chapters and takes place in two kingdoms on the continent of Valentia: Rigel and Zofia. The world map is slowly revealed for players to traverse through the game's five chapters.

The first chapter begins with Alm training under Mycen in Ram Village, and witnessing the arrival of Lukas, who has come to the village seeking Mycen's aid. He reveals that the Zofian general Desaix has launched a coup and sacked Zofia Castle, killing the king in the process. In response, a group of knights under Clive have formed a Zofia Liberation Army against him, but have been put on the ropes and now request that Mycen lead them. Mycen refuses to get involved and forbids Alm from doing so as well, but Alm chooses to go in his stead regardless. Alm, alongside the villagers Kliff, Tobin, and Gray, join with Lukas and set out of the village.

On the way to the Liberation Army's HQ, Alm's party rescues Silque, a cleric of Mila, from bandits in the Thieves' Shrine and comes across the Southern Fortress. Here, they clash with Desaix's forces for the first time, and find Clive's sister Claire imprisoned within. Once they arrive at the headquarters, Clive requests that Alm take control of the Zofia Liberation Army. Alm also learns that Desaix has entered into alliance with Rigel and hears a rumor that the recent crop failures is due to Mila's disappearance.

At the castle of Zofia Castle, Alm's forces enter battle with Desaix and his lieutenant Slayde. After felling either Slayde or Desaix's double, Desaix retreats back to his own fortress, vowing revenge. At the top of the castle, Alm reunites with Mycen, who ventured to Zofia Castle on his own in secret. Mycen encourages Alm to follow the path he believes in and release Valentia from its cursed fate.

On the island of Novis, Celica sets off from Priory and parts ways with Nomah, the sage who Mycen entrusted her with, to discover the truth behind Mila's disappearance. She is accompanied by fellow cleric Genny and the mages Boey and Mae. At Novis Greatport, Celica hires the mercenary Saber to protect them as they travel to the mainland by ship. After clashing with the pirates plaguing the seas, Celica arrives at the Pirate's Fortress, where her party comes to the aid of the knight Valbar in his battle against the pirate lord Barth. Celica also encounters a Draco Zombie in the Sea Shrine guarding the Blessed Sword.

At Zofia Harbor, Celica briefly meets with Palla and Catria, who have traveled to Valentia tracking down the pirates who kidnapped their sister Est. Celica parts ways with the Pegasus Knights and makes her way to Zofia Castle, where she reunites with Mycen. Mycen sends her up to Alm and the two reunite, though they soon argue over whether war with Rigel is necessary and Alm's plans to find the missing princess of Zofia (unaware that Celica is said princess). Celica then departs for the Temple of Mila.

After Celica leaves Zofia Castle, a landslide separates her from Alm's forces. At the Zofian Coast, Celica again encounters the Whitewings and assists them in battling bandits loyal to Grieth. At Zofia Harbor, Palla reveals that they were actually looking for Celica and wishes to lend their strength to Celica's journey in return for helping them rescue Est. Celica soon arrives at a Mountain Village that has fallen into decline due to Grieth's constant ravaging and abduction of the youth to work as his slaves. Here, she meets the villager Atlas, who joins with them to stop Grieth.

After liberating the Desert Stronghold, Celica comes across the mercenary Jesse, who was imprisoned for attempting to rescue Est from Grieth. Jesse is at first unsure that the army can defeat Grieth, but also points out the animosity between Grieth and his subordinates Sonya and Deen, who hold each other in check. Jesse states that if Celica defeats one, the other will join them. At Grieth's Citadel, Celica finally defeats the pirate and earns the loyalty of the officer who she didn't slay. She also liberates Grieth's prisoners, among them Est and a priestess of Mila who knew Celica's mother, Liprica. After recounting the tale of how she came to be wed to the king of Zofia and her death, the priestess gives Celica a circlet that proves her identity as princess of Zofia.

Once they arrive at the Temple of Mila, they find it occupied by shamans of Duma led by Mikhail. After defeating the shamans, Celica learns from the priestesses within that the temple was attacked by the Rigel army and that Mila was sealed by King Rudolf in the Falchion, which he received from Duma. In order to pass forward, Celica must open the floodgate beneath the temple simultaneously with the one at the Sluice Gate.

Meanwhile, Alm's forces enter into battle with the Rigel army in the regions north of the castle. Alm's forces make their way to the Forest Village, where they are approached by Luthier, who requests their aid in recusing his sister Delthea from Tatarrah. Alm also learns that the Rigel forces are forcing the Sluice Gate closed and that it must be opened before it floods Zofia.

Alm's forces lay siege to Desaix's Fortress, and in a panic, Desaix orders that his men execute Mathilda, who they had captured. Desaix is slain, and with his dying breath he accuses Mycen of selling out Zofia to Rudolf's son. Within the castle, Alm revives the Royal Sword and recruits Mathilda into his army.

Once they arrive at the Sluice Gate, Tatarrah orders the brainwashed Delthea to attack Alm's forces, but she is freed when Tatarrah is slain. Inside the gate, Delthea reunites with Luthier and joins Alm's army, and the two floodgates are opened, allowing both Alm and Celica to venture into Rigel proper.

Within the Temple of Mila, Celica reunites with Nomah, who followed them in secret and fell down into the basement, and joins them to give himself peace of mind. Celica's forces begin to fight their way through the swamp and reach the fortress of Dolth, who attempts to fight them off by summoning Draco Zombies. Eventually, Celica arrives at the Sage's Hamlet, where she meets with Halcyon, the former High Priest of Duma who was defeated by Jedah and banished. Halcyon confirms that the Falchion lays beneath Duma Tower, but comments that Jedah will not allow anyone to come near the tower. At Celica's request, he increases Alm's power, promoting him to Hero.

Meanwhile, Alm's forces begin their attack on Rigel, fighting their way through Terror Mountain and to the mansion of Nuibaba, a necromancer who has gained great power by selling his soul for the Medusa spell. After defeating Nuibaba, Alm finds the Rigelian priestess Tatiana imprisoned in the manor. Tatiana explains that she was kidnapped by Nuibaba and Jerome to force her lover Zeke to fight, as he opposed the war. Tatiana accompanies Alm's army as it engages Jerome and Zeke, allowing Zeke to betray Jerome. At the Rigel Village, Alm and Zeke reunite and Zeke is at first unwilling to betray Rudolf, who showed him kindness after he washed up on shore without his memories, but changes his mind upon seeing Alm's birthmark, as Rudolf instructed him to follow the bearer of this mark as he would be Rigel's savior.

Celica's forces enter the Duma Swamp, where they are ambushed by Jedah and a horde of Mogalls. After fighting their way through the Mogalls, they approach Duma Tower. Atop the tower, Jedah introduces himself and shows her a vision of Alm's forces struggling against the Draco Zombies of Dragon Mountain. Jedah offers to open Alm's path in return for Celica and her army allowing themselves to be sacrificed to Duma.

Freed from Dragon Mountain, Alm's forces push on to Rigel Castle, where they enter battle with Rudolf's forces. During the battle, Rudolf refuses to attack Alm and is cut down, revealing with his dying breaths that Alm is actually his son Albein and entrusting him to claim the Falchion and defeat Duma. Within the castle, Alm is met by General Massena and the remnants of Rudolf's army, who hail Alm as their new king. Alm meets Mycen within the castle as well, who explains that Rudolf entrusted Alm to him in hopes that Alm would be able to free Valentia from the chains of the gods, who are inadvertently leading the land to ruin, and that Rudolf was willing to make himself a destroyer so that the heroes of the land would rise to stop him. Mycen joins Alm's army and encourages him to march onward to the Temple of Duma to rescue Celica and defeat Duma.

Marth is the prince of Altea and a direct descendant of Anri, the warrior who slew the Shadow Dragon Medeus. However, after an attack from the neighboring kingdom of Dolhr, Marth is forced to become an exile in the neighboring nation of Talys, beginning the War of Shadows. In the ensuing chaos, Marth's sister Elice is taken hostage, and his father is killed battling the evil priest Gharnef. With the help of Altean knight and mentor Jagen, Princess Caeda of Talys and others, Marth embarks on a quest to find the divine sword Falchion. Only then will he be able to confront Gharnef and the resurrected Medeus, reclaim the kingdom of Altea, and rescue his sister.

During his journey, Marth learns of Medeus's connection to the ancient Manakete tribe (a group who are able to transform into dragons using special stones) and that Medeus is the king of the last remaining dragon tribe. He also obtains the Fire Emblem, a divine shield crafted by Naga, which has the power to seal Earth Dragons. Later on, Marth confronts and defeats Gharnef, procuring the Falchion. With the combined power of the Falchion and the Fire Emblem, Marth breaks through Medeus' Earth Dragons, and confronts the Shadow Dragon himself. After a decisive battle, Medeus is seemingly slain once again, and Marth brings peace back to the continent.

In Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem, Hardin, former Prince of Aurelis (and ally to Marth during the War of Shadows) ascends to the position of Emperor of Archanea. However, Marth realizes something is not right as Hardin's military begins to occupy neighboring countries by force, and Marth and his army are used to conquer smaller nations under orders of General Lang (This triggers the start of the War of Heroes). Marth soon discovers the forces of darkness at work again as Lang, Hardin and his forces are corrupted. Marth soon also learns that the Dragon King Medeus is still alive. Tracing an old legend of yore, Marth retrieves the Fire Emblem once again (this time from Linde, who was entrusted with it by Princess Nyna), and embarks on a quest to retrieve the 12 Starsphere Shards to revive the shattered Starsphere. This occurs as Archanean forces hunt Marth and his allies, branded traitors by Hardin, relentlessly, all the way to the desert of Khadein. Marth learns from Boah that a depressed Hardin was corrupted with the Darksphere by Gharnef in the form of a merchant and that only the Lightsphere can break the Darksphere's hold of Hardin. Assisted by the sage Gotoh, Marth journeys through the icy mountains to obtain the Lightsphere and repairs the Starsphere, required to defeat and free Hardin.

With Lightsphere in hand, Marth and his allies stage a final assault on Archanea to liberate Altea, to save Hardin and Elice. Sadly Marth is unable to break the Darksphere's spell without killing Hardin in the process. After Hardin dies, two special chapters are unlocked, and Marth and his allies discover where the new incarnations of Medeus and Gharnef reside. Gharnef again possesses the Falchion, and is again defeated using the Starlight spell. Marth confronts Medeus, who has now taken the form of a Dark Dragon. In the final confrontation, Medeus holds captive princess Nyna, Minerva's younger sister Maria, Julian's crush Lena, and Marth's sister Elice, who is also Merric's love interest. Sirius (Camus), Merric, Minerva and Julian rescue the healers as Marth slays the Dark Dragon Medeus once and for all.

The prologue of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War begins with Prince Kurth, the son of King Azmur, making the decision for the Grannvaleian army to subdue the Kingdom of Isaach, in response to an invasion of Darna by barbarians of Rivough, a dukedom of Isaach. This was an unforeseen occurrence due to the kingdoms of Grannvale and Isaach being at peace for many years.

Lord Sigurd of Chalphy remains in Chalphy castle while his father Byron was away fighting in Isaach alongside Kurth and Ring of Jungby. He believed he had nothing to fear, because there were no invasions or threats from the other countries in the continent of Jugdral; unfortunately, Sigurd's assumption was proven incorrect.

Prince Munnir of Verdane, and his army invade Grannvale, seizing Jungby Castle, which is the closest castle to the Grannvale-Verdane boundary. Princess Edain, alongside only a few knights that stayed at the castle to protect her, were at Jungby Castle. The Jungby knights were defeated by Munnir and his army, except for Midayle, the strongest of all Jungby archers, though (despite his skill) he was defeated by Munnir himself as well. Shortly thereafter, Munnir left Grannvale for Verdane and took Edain as his hostage, intending to force her to marry him.

Sigurd was informed about what has just happened at Jungby and decided to gather the remaining Chalphy knights (Naoise, Alec, and Arden), to travel to the Kingdom of Verdane to rescue Edain. While on the road to Jungby Castle, Sigurd is joined first by Azelle of Velthomer, who snuck out of Belhalla Castle and dragged Lex of Dozel into joining Sigurd, and then by his sister Ethlyn, her husband (Sigurd's brother-in-law and best friend) Quan of Leonster and their loyal and most valuable knight, Finn.

Sigurd first met Quan at the Royal Academy of Belhalla, alongside Eldigan of Nordion, a general of the Kingdom of Agustria. Quan says that he is always with Sigurd, especially in times of war. All together, they battle Dimagio, who was left by Munnir and was guarding Jungby Castle, and retake Jungby. There, Sigurd finds Midayle alive and recuperating. He tries to make Midayle rest, but instead, Midayle joins Sigurd's conquest to rescue Edain.

Arvis of Velthomer intercepts Sigurd, who is now on the road to Evans Castle, which is officially located in the Kingdom of Verdane, and gives him the Silver Sword from King Azmur. He also tells Sigurd to look after his half-brother Azelle (Arvis and Azelle have different mothers; Azelle's mother was a servant of Arvis's mother Cigyun).

In Evans Castle, Sigurd's armies defeat Gerald, but no trace of Edain was found in the castle. Lord Filat, King Azmur's messenger, arrives to Evans Castle to inform that Sigurd has been entitled "Holy Knight of Grannvale" and orders Sigurd's forces to go deeper into the Kingdom of Verdane.

Edain, whom Sigurd and Oifey failed to find in Jungby Castle, had already been taken by Munnir into the Kingdom of Verdane, to Marpha Castle.

King Batou of Verdane was a pacifist. Until he took the throne, the Kingdom of Verdane was a nightmarish land, filled with chaos. He brought peace, order, and freedom to Verdane and it seemed likely to last for many years with his three heirs: Munnir, Cimbaeth, and Jamke. Matters degenerated after a mysterious magician, Sandima, showed up. Sandima's influence largely caused King Batou to order Verdane's invasion of Grannvale, and the nation grew more and more aggressive. Munnir and Cimbaeth lost their hearts and did whatever Sandima wished; only Jamke did not give into Sandima's influence. The Verdanian people became aware of the loss of peace and the kingdom becoming engulfed in the flames of war and wished to have their pacifist king back.

Sigurd and his forces resided in Evans Castle, the north-easternmost castle of Verdane, located on the border of the Kingdoms of Grannvale, Verdane, and Agustria the Lords' Dominion, but officially located in Verdane, with the border of Grannvale to the east and the border of Agustria to the west.

Eldigan came to meet with Lord Sigurd to ask him why he was present in Verdane. Sigurd said that the Verdanian army took Edain hostage with no signs of releasing her and that he was forced to take up arms. After Sigurd talked with Eldigan, Eldigan said that he will watch and protect Evans Castle from Agustrian raids. Therefore, Sigurd and his forces left for Genoa Castle, which is located far to the south of Evans Castle, feeling that his back is under the Nordion army's protection.

Meanwhile, in Marpha Castle, located west of Genoa Castle, Munnir and Jamke stayed in the castle with the kidnapped Edain. However, Jamke was attracted to Edain and decided to free her, to her surprise. He sent her out of Marpha castle with Dew, a teenage thief whom he caught some days before; Dew agreed with Jamke to convert him and protect Edain until she reached safe haven.

Dew and Edain fled from Marpha Castle and headed to Evans Castle through the deep Verdanian forests. Along the way, they met Sigurd's army, and decided to join them. But immediately after they fled Marpha Castle, Munnir found out that Edain was missing and sent the Marpha army to hunt down Dew and bring Edain back to Marpha Castle. A division of Sigurd's army that was not heading for Genoa easily crushed this army.

In Genoa Castle, Cimbaeth felt threatened by Sigurd's army and decided to attack with his own. He was so afraid to leave his castle empty that he forced Ayra, a mercenary whom he just hired (after she fled from her native country, the Kingdom of Isaach, to escape the conflict with Grannvale) to guard Genoa Castle. Ayra was not very willing to do so, but Cimbaeth threatened to kill his prisoner and Ayra's young nephew, Prince Shannan of Isaach, if she shirks her duty. Ayra reluctantly agreed, but she told Cimbaeth that if he double-crossed her, she would impale him on a stick. Then, Cimbaeth and the Genoa army went after Sigurd's army.

After a reunion with Edain, Sigurd's army crushed both the Marpha army and Cimbaeth and his Genoa army. They went south to Genoa, where they met Ayra, who fought Sigurd et al. alongside the remaining axefighters of Genoa army. Sigurd entered Genoa Castle to rescue Shannan, being very much worried about his paternal aunt Ayra after hearing the boy's tale; he took little Shannan with him and talked to Ayra to convince her to stop fighting.

Seeing that Cimbaeth was dead and there was no more to fear, Ayra reciprocated Sigurd's trust, and she said that such was the way of the Isaachian warrior. She still viewed Grannvale as her sworn enemy, and Sigurd prayed that Ayra would not turn against him. Thus, she decided to join Sigurd's army.

Shortly thereafter, Quan apologized to Ayra and discussed with her the political situation between the Kingdoms of Isaach and Grannvale. Quan's father, King Calf of Leonster, had a high opinion of Ayra's father, King Mananan, who had recently been assassinated on the Grannvaleian fronts. At the time, Mananan was journeying to Belhalla to explain to Prince Kurth about the situation with Rivough.

Meanwhile, right as Eldigan had expected, Elliot of Heirhein and his army attempts to seize Evans Castle. The border guard informs Eldigan of Elliot's invasion. Eldigan argues with Heirhein, telling Elliot that he is running in direct violation of the Agustrian ruler's orders. He and his army of powerful Cross Knights crushes Elliot's army, sending him back to Heirhein. Feeling Nordion Castle may soon be in further danger, Eldigan and his army leave Evans and return to Nordion.

Sigurd continues to travel deep south into the Verdane and enters Marpha castle, where Edain had been held hostage. Munnir was present at Marpha castle to fight Sigurd, but only a handful of soldiers remained. Therefore, it did not take very long to subjugate Marpha castle. Prince Jamke was not present at the time of the subjugation, and Edain believes that he came to the city of Verdane to attempt to convince his father Batou one last time to seek peace for Verdane.

As Sigurd walked through Marpha, he helped out a young girl named Deirdre, who had been harassed by some thugs. She knew his name upon seeing him; this was because she had been held hostage by Munnir as well, and had spoken to Edain. At first sight, Sigurd fell for to the soft-spoken Deirdre, but she fled before he was able to ask her name.

An old man stepped in and informed the confused Sigurd that Deirdre was a maiden of the Spirit Forest, and that she was actually forbidden to associate with anyone outside the forest. He also said that the villagers believe that any man from outside the forest comes too close to her will be greatly cursed. However, Sigurd said that he did not believe in such legends and that he would attempt to reunite with her.

Meanwhile, Prince Jamke was in Verdane Castle to speak with his father, Batou, about making a peace treaty with Grannvale. His father, still under Sandima's curse, refused to listen. Sandima then ordered Jamke to depart from Verdane Castle with the remainder of the castle's army and attack Sigurd's army. A very disgusted Jamke reluctantly accepted Sandima's orders.

As soon as Jamke left, Sandima assassinated King Batou. Manfroy, Sandima's master and the head of the Loptyrian Cult, showed up and told Sandima to clean up the mess in the Kingdom of Verdane. He also asked if he has found Cigyun's daughter, whom he needed in order to resurrect the Dark Lord Loptous. Sandima said that he was still searching for her, and this upset Manfroy, who claimed that Cigyun's son Arvis had been already found, but they now need the daughter...

Prince Jamke was still unhappy about attacking Sigurd's army. At the battlefield in the forest, he reunited with Edain, and Edain told him that Sigurd did not come to Verdane to invade the country, but merely to rescue her. She convinced him that he should listen to his own emotions and do what he believes best. Shortly thereafter, Jamke joined Sigurd's army.

On their way to Verdane Castle, Sigurd's army traversed a deep forest. Deirdre came up to Sigurd, saying that she attempted to forget that she ever met him, but that could only make her more miserable. Sigurd told her loved her back, and that he didn't believe in the legends of the Spirit Forest.

Deirdre joins Sigurd's army as they continue northward to Verdane Castle. Sandima had a lethal dark spell called "Fenrir", able to attack at long range; Deirdre, however, used her Silence Staff to disable Sandima's magic.

As Sigurd subjugated the castle, they found a lethally injured King Batou. In his last words, King Batou told Sigurd that the evil spreading across the continent of Jugdral is the work of the Loptyrian Cult, a dark sect bent on destroying everything that is good and on accelerating the resurrection of the Dark Lord Loptous. Afterwards, Sigurd and his army returned to Evans Castle, and he married Deirdre.

King Imuka was mysteriously assassinated. Sigurd receives orders from Belhalla to resume possession of Evans Castle. There, he marries Deirdre. Some months later, Eldigan goes to Agusty Castle to tell King Chagall how cruel war is and how burdensome it is on the citizenry. Chagall casts Eldigan into the Agusty dungeon, accusing Eldigan of making him appear foolish. Then Manfroy arrives, telling him they need the children of Cigyun to resurrect the Dark Lord Loptous. They already have the son (Arvis), but they need the daughter. Chagall also has plans to invade Grannvale.

Meanwhile, in Nordion, Lachesis and her guardian Eve receive word that Eldigan was incarcerated in Agusty. Eldigan left three cross paladins Eve, Eva, and Alva to protect his sister. Eve says that if Heirhein's army finds out that Eldigan is apprehended, they would attack Nordion without warning. In Anphony Castle, Macbeth believes they have a free reign now that Chagall has taken the throne. He is excited Heirhein's army has taken up arms, and deploys thieves to strip the villages in the central Agustria forest near Mackily Castle of all their valuables.

In Evans Castle, Sigurd receives word that Eldigan is captured, and tells Deirdre that he is heading for Nordion. Deirdre insists on fighting alongside him. At the arena, Chulainn is beaten by a member of the army, most likely Ayra. Money was his motivator for being a gladiator but felt empty after his only loss at the arena. He says that Ayra was not in the arena for the money and decides to join Sigurd's army, saying that he wants to fight for a greater cause.

A division of the Heirhein army, led by Boldor and his son Elliot, attacks Nordion and attempts to capture Lachesis. However, Sigurd and the mounted members of his army rescue and recruit Lachesis. Sigurd tells Lachesis that King Azmur approves of the Grannvaleian invasion of Agustria and that Azmur is aware of the assassination of King Imuka as well as Chagall's plans to invade Grannvale. Elliot's last words are "Why do things always go Eldigan's way?". Sigurd's army moves on to kill the remainder of the Heirhein army, including Boldor's henchman Phillip. After Sigurd conquers Heirhein, Chagall goes to Anphony and informs Macbeth, saying that Macbeth's avarice cost him Heirhein. Meanwhile, Lewyn and Sylvia receive word that Macbeth sent bandits to destroy the villages in central Agustria. Lewyn intervenes and saves the villages, as Sylvia dances to guide him.

Shortly after Sigurd conquers Anphony, Filat arrives and tells Sigurd there are rumors going around in the Royal Court of Belhalla that Sigurd, Quan, and Eldigan are conspiring against Prince Kurth of Belhalla, and that this is why Sigurd hides Shannan the Prince of Isaac. Filat tells about the late Victor. Victor was the Duke of Velthomer and the father of Arvis and Azelle. He was a reputed womanizer and had several lovers.

At Mackily Castle, a dark mage announces the assassination of Prince Kurth. Manfroy says that it is starting to get interesting. They are still looking for Cigyun's daughter. Erinys comes to Agustria to take Lewyn back to Silesia, and Chagall tells her that Lewyn is a prisoner in Evans Castle. Erinys and her squad go to Evans Castle, but Lewyn arrives and convinces her to join Sigurd's army. Sigurd's army heads to Mackily Castle and kills Clement.

After Sigurd subdues Mackily Castle, Chagall sends Zayn and his army after Sigurd's army. Lachesis tells Chagall he is not her king and wounds him with her lances. Afterwards, Eve, Eva, and Alva return to Nordion Castle. It is six months before the next chapter begins.

Six months have passed since the previous chapter. The leadership that they have been trusted with was broken all too soon. According to the introductory narration, this chapter would well change the history of Jugdral.

Eldigan and his crossknights are stationed in Silvail Castle. The Orgahill pirates start to raid the villages near Madino Castle. At Agusty Castle, Seliph is born. This time, Deirdre cannot leave the castle, and Shannan is with her and Seliph.

The Orgahill pirates start to raid the villages of northern Agustria. By the end of the battle, Sigurd seizes Madino, he meets Claud of Edda and Tailtiu of Freege. Claud suspects that Sigurd's father Byron is accused of assassinating Prince Kurth.

Meanwhile, Deirdre leaves Agusty Castle, leaving Seliph in Shannan's care, attempting to meet up with Sigurd. Before she could reach Sigurd at Madino Castle, Manfroy appears before her, wipes Deirdre's mind, captures her, and leaves her for Arvis to find in order to resurrect the dark dragon lord Loptous.

Eldigan is forced by Chagall to fight against his will and betray Sigurd. He leads the Silvail cross-knight army against Sigurd's army. Lachesis comes to Eldigan and convinces him that betrayal is not the way of a knight. He gives her the Earth Sword as a remembrance of him. Afterwards, Eldigan returns to Silvail, but he is publicly decapitated by the Silvail guardsmen under Chagall's orders. Lachesis was devastated.

Travant arrives at Silvail, and Chagall hires the Thracian mercenary army in an attempt to wipe out Sigurd's army. However, the mercenaries fail and Travant flees the country, leaving Chagall to be defeated once and for all, with Chulainn finishing him off and winning the Silver Blade from him.

Shortly after Sigurd conquers Silvail, Prince Shannan, carrying baby Seliph, comes to Sigurd at Silvail and informs him of Deirdre's fate. At Madino, Ethlyn gives Quan the Gáe Bolg. However, Quan gets to use it only for a short time.

Brigid joins Sigurd's army, and flees from pirates until a division of Sigurd's army fights them off. Edain meets Brigid for the first time since childhood and gives Brigid the Holy Bow Yewfelle, which she has kept for her.

Claud talks with Sigurd and tells that King Mananan, father of Ayra and grandfather of her nephew Prince Shannan, was assassinated by none other than Tailtiu's father Duke Reptor when journeying to tell the truth about the siege on Darna, and hopes that Sigurd would clear his name at the time of Chapter 5.

After Sigurd conquers Orgahil, Lombard and his army march to Agusty Castle, and Sigurd is deemed a traitor to Grannvale. Erinys's sister Annand arrives at Orgahill and takes Sigurd and his army to Silessa.

Sigurd and his army arrive with Annand to Silesse, a country covered with snow. They arrive at Sailane Castle. Erinys and Lewyn are suspicious of the skirmish there, and Silesse is engulfed in the flames of warfare.

Quan, Ethlyn, and Finn leave Sigurd and return to their home kingdom Manster. Edain professes her love to someone at this point.

Lewyn's uncles Maios and Daccar protest the idea of him ascending to the Silessean throne. Silesse then falls into civil war. A Loptyrian cultist marches with a wind mage brigade, while Deet'var travels with her pegasus knight brigade.

Soon after conquering Thove castle and killing Maios, Daccar, another one of Lewyn's uncles, summons Pamela to launch an attack onto Silesse Castle and hold its Queen as a hostage. However, Annand, the older sister of Erinys, gathers her brigade to counter-attack the upcoming attack from Pamela. Andorey, the brother of Edain and Brigid and the father of Scipio, comes with his army of archer knights, and kills off Annand and her pegasus knights. The player can do nothing to prevent Annand's death, which sends Lewyn and Erinys into borderline despair.

Silesse Castle is soon taken over by Daccar. Lewyn and Erinys then mourn Annand, and immediately thereafter, Andorey and his army return to Grannvale. Queen Rahna orders the people of Silesse Castle town to flee to the mountains near Sailane. These civilians are then rescued by a division of Sigurd's army.

After Sigurd retakes Silesse Castle from Daccar, Lewyn talks with his mother Rahna and then obtains the holy scroll Forseti. Meanwhile, Daccar hires an all-female mercenary group led by Swordmaster Reimia. After her army is crushed by a division of Sigurd's army, Reimia is then killed by Ayra. After Sigurd seizes Zaxon, they stay for several months in the castle, with their impending fate to come after the showdown ahead.

Things are getting worse and worse for Sigurd and his friends, so he decides that it is time to resolve everything. He and others, now in Zaxon castle, go stop Lombard, Lex's father, and the other remaining Dukes. Byron has travelled there too in order to give Sigurd the Holy weapon of Baldur, the Tyrfing. At the moment Lombard falls, Sigurd conquers Lubeck Castle. Shannan and Oifey flee with Seliph, along with several other children of the army, to Tirnanog. Ayra informs Sigurd that she has finished fulfilling her promise to her late brother Mariccle, and she plans to stay with Sigurd (at least until the Battle of Belhalla). Afterwards, Quan and Ethlyn return form Leonster. Unfortunately the Thracian Dragon Knights have followed them, and even with the Gáe Bolg in Quan's hands, the player can do nothing to prevent their deaths. Even if the player used cheat devices to spare them, as soon as the player takes the next castle, Quan and Ethlyn will be presumed dead and will disappear from the map. This event is mentioned in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, including the in-game synopsis. After this event, Travant takes Altena and the Gáe Bolg and returns to Thracia. The other members of the Thracian army get slain by Sigurd's army. After he conquers Phinora, Sigurd hears news about the deaths of Quan and Ethlyn. Then his army ventures across the Yied Desert. Reptor's army stands still until Sigurd's army arrives to attack range. Once that happens, the Velthomer army turns against Reptor. The player may use Erinys as the bait to get Reptor's army to move early. Once Reptor is defeated, then the battle is over.

Arvis summons Sigurd and his army to perform an assumed victory celebration. However, the Battle of Belhalla (aka the Belhalla Massacre or the Belhalla Incident) commences. Sigurd meets his destiny, falling into Arvis's trap. As he is incinerated by Arvis's Valflame, the picture turns black and white, beginning the intermission. The casualties in the Belhalla Incident are unclear. The event is discussed in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, and that game confirms some of the survivors. Thracia 776 confirms that Edain, Brigid, Erinys, Lachesis, Tailtiu, and Sylvia survived. This game and Fire Emblem Heroes do not explicitly reveal Ayra's fate on the Battle of Belhalla, thus ambiguous. After the Battle of Belhella, Arvis traveled to the Spirit Forest to investigate Deirdre's past and discovered that she was in fact his sister. His feelings for her did not change and he simply tried his best to not let her know.

Edain retired to Tirnanog Castle sanctuary and conducted church services. She helped raise Seliph, Diarmuid/Tristan, Ulster/Dalvin, Larcei/Creidne, and her own children Lester and Lana. It is rumored that Brigid became Eyvel. Erinys returned to Silesia and becomes queen after Rahna's death, but by the time of Seliph's tale, she died of natural causes. Lachesis sent her daughter Nanna for Finn's care in Leonster. She was heading to Isaach in search of her son Diarmuid, but she was captured by the Loptyrian Cult and turned into stone. Tailtiu fled to Silesia and gave birth to Tine, Arthur's younger sister, and her children were given necklaces. She suffered post-traumatic stress from the Belhalla Incident. She eventually returned to Freege and started crying everyday, unable to withstand the loss of her friends, losing contact with her son Arthur, and she endured abuse from Hilda. Her mind and body could no longer withstand it, and she died of an illness. Sylvia survived the Belhalla Incident, but her whereabouts are unknown. She leaves her children Lene and Coirpre in an orphanage located in Darna. Ayra's case involving the Belhalla Incident is very unclear and highly debated. She is presumed dead during the game ending, but many Fire Emblem fans refuse to believe this. However, many Japanese sources differ on her case, and many Fire Emblem fans believe that she is actually still alive at the time of the game's ending and that she retired to the Isaachian countryside tilling her father's fields.

Additionally, Manfroy confronted Lewyn alone and killed him. However, the Dragon God Forseti intervened and possessed Lewyn's body, erasing some of his memories, and laid low for awhile.

With the death of Sigurd, Arvis remained as the sole power of Grannvale and was eventually crowned as Emperor. He successfully created a peaceful regime in Grannvale that lasted for 15 years. He was also blessed with two twin children, Julius and Julia, from Deirdre. However, after 15 years of peace, things started to change. The events of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 begin 16 years after Chapter 5 of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. With the resurrection of Loptous, the Grannvaleian Empire became an authoritarian regime.

This chapter begins 17 years after the Battle of Belhalla, in the year 777. Arvis is now Emperor of Grannvale and the people live in total oppression. The ruler of Isaach, King Danann, is talking to his general, Harold, about a group of rebels. Harold says that he has found the rebels' hideout and has sent an army to capture and execute them. Meanwhile, at the rebels' hideout, Ulster (Ayra's son) or Dalvin (His substitute) sees the army and rushes inside to tell his twin sister, Larcei or Dalvin's sister, Creidne. Larcei/Creidne wants to fight the army, but Ulster/Dalvin is hesitant to fight. Seliph comes in and says that Ulster/Dalvin does want to fight; he is just worried about Seliph. Seliph says to not worry and the three prepare to go to battle. The priestess Lana/Muirne wants to come too, but Seliph tells her to stay here. However, he changes his mind when he sees how much she wants to come. At turn three, Oifey, Diarmuid/Tristan, and Lester/Deimne arrive and join Seliph's cause.

Upon conquering Ganeishire, the group finds Lewyn and Princess Julia, who has lost her memory. Lewyn leaves Julia with Seliph and his companions to attend other matters while King Danan orders his sons Iuchar and his younger brother Iucharba to attack. Neither of them really wants to attack because Larcei fights alongside the rebels. Larcei can convince either one of them to join and have their soldiers as green allies, but the other will get jealous and attack without question. On turn two after conquering Ganeishire, Fee/Hermina, a pegasus knight, daughter of Erinys (Fee), and Arthur/Amid, a mage, will arrive near Sophara. Fee/Hermina set out looking for her brother, Ced/Hawk, and Arthur/Amid left to look for his sister Tine/Linda. They both decide to join the rebels and help their cause. The group marches on and defeat King Danan in Rivough. Danan was the son of Lombard who inherited Major Neir blood. His first son, Brian, also holds this blood, which gives him the ability to use the Holy Axe Helswath. The rebels march on to look for their leader, Prince Shannan.

After Seliph liberates the Kingdom of Isaach from Danan's reign, they begin to cross the Yied Desert from Rivough Castle. Meanwhile, Finn, Leif (son of Quan and Ethlyn), and Nanna/Jeanne begin to defend Leonster. Fee/Hermina flies into Leonster to help them out, while Seliph, Larcei/Creidne, and Ulster/Dalvin meet with Shannan. At the beginning of the second turn, Shannan and Patty (daughter of Brigid) or Daisy join Seliph's liberation army. Patty/Daisy infiltrates Yied Shrine and seizes the Balmung, which was transferred from Isaach Castle after the Isaachian-Grannvaleian War, and gives it to Shannan. Ares (son of Eldigan and Grahnye) also betrays his adopted father Jabarro and their employer, Bramsel, after Lene/Laylea is imprisoned inside of Darna Castle. When Ares meets Seliph, he declares that he will have revenge for Sigurd's supposed murder of Eldigan. Arthur/Amid finally reunites with his long-lost sister, Tine/Linda, who was raised by Bloom. After showing her his pendant that is identical to hers, she is convinced that they are siblings and defects to Seliph's army, although she is pained by fighting against her family. Once Darna falls and Bramsel is defeated, Ares enters the castle and finds Lene/Laylea. At this time, she joins up with Seliph's army.

The chapter starts with Bloom at Conote still mourning the loss of Alster as a key defensive point, and is determined to take it back and defeat Leonster at all costs. He sends one army, commanded by General Muhammad, to retrieve Alster, and another army commanded by Ovo, a Mage Knight. After they depart, he also sends the Mage trio of Vampa, Fetra, and Eliu, now equipped with leg rings, to assist Ovo's attack on Leonster. Meanwhile, King Travant of Thracia waits in Mease, waiting for the outcome of the battle between Seliph and Bloom's armies, since he desires the Leonster peninsula for his country. Accompanying him are his son Arion, and Altena, the very same Altena who was stolen from Ethlyn's arms at the Battle of Belhalla, now raised as Travant's child, and wielding the Gáe Bolg. Eventually, Seliph and Leif manage to defeat Ovo, Muhammad and the mage trio, and set out for Conote. Bloom then asks the help of Febail/Asaello, Patty's/Daisy's brother and wielder of the Yewfelle (Febail only). Febail/Asaello only agrees to help him if Bloom pays him enough to help the poor. However, Patty/Daisy straightens him up and he joins Seliph's army. The last true obstacle between Seliph and Conote is Ishtar, Bloom's child, the so-called "Goddess of Thunder". She asks her father for Mjolnir so that she can defeat all enemies, and she sets out. Julia even warns Seliph not to attack her, for she is a formidable foe. Even so, Seliph's army manages to defeat Ishtar. However, before Ishtar can be killed, Prince Julius appears and orders her to stay at his side. They teleport away, leaving no formidable protection for Conote. Seliph manages to defeat Bloom and takes possession of Conote. Now, the stage is set so Travant can take easily seize the unguarded territories of Leonster, Conote, and Manster. There is a small resistance led by Ced/Hawk, Fee's/Hermina's brother. Ced/Hawk orders the villagers of Manster to flee, for he is not to sure of his victory on Travant's forces alone. Travant then appoints Altena as the commander of Thracia's forces, mainly composed of dragon knights in the attack, but she is hesitant to attack innocent people. Regardless, she still sets out to attack. Travant then leaves Mease, appointing somebody else for the protection of Mease. However, Altena stops at halfway and stays alone in the mountains, questioning her "father's" decision. Without her help, Thracia's army falls to Seliph. Ced/Hawk is so grateful he joins him. If the player paired Erinys and Lewyn, Ced will carry a grudge against Lewyn for leaving his mother alone. Regardless, Seliph defeats the army stationed in Mease. Altena, after seeing the outcome of the battle, decides to retreat into Thracia.

This chapter starts in Thracia, where King Travant has retreated. Protecing him is a massive army commanded by General Hannibal, the "Shield of Thracia", a Dark bishop sent from Grannvale, and Travant himself, worthy of using the Gungnir. Altena reaches the main castle and talks to Travant, wishing for no more bloodshed. However, Travant orders her back to leading a Dragon knight squadron, and with convincing from her "brother" Arion, she sets out to defeat Seliph's army. Meanwhile, General Hannibal ponders the course of the war in a similar fashion to Altena. Travant questions his loyalty, and he demands proof of it: Travant demands Hannibal's adoptive child, Coirpre, to be taken to Luthecia as insurance of his loyalty. While all of this is happening, Finn recalls the face of Altena in the last battle, and advises Leif to talk to her, so that he might convince her of joining Seliph's army. The battle starts with Hannibal deploying his army and leaving a subordinate to guard Kapathogia, his castle. Also, Altena rushes to meet Seliph's army in battle. However, Leif encounters her before any casualties may happen, and tells her of her true heritage. Altena decides to question Travant about her heritage; however, Arion attacks her for questioning their father. Hannibal's army poses a tough block for Seliph, but they defeat his army, and they cut off Hannibal's escape route, preventing reinforcements. That gives Seliph a chance to seize Luthecia and free Coirpre/Charlot, who goes immediately to his father to talk to him. Eventually, Hannibal joins you. New threats appear at this point; Musar, with reinforcements from Grannvale, appears in the northwest to aid Grutia. Also, Travant decides to enter the battlefield, not without leaving the Gungnir to Arion. Without the aid of the Gungnir, Travant falls easily. Now, the new King Arion decides to wake Altena up, who was passed out from Arion's blow. Arion tells her that he only faked his attack on her so that she might leave and advises her to join Leif. Not without some regret, Altena leaves the main castle and reaches Seliph to ask him if he wanted her services. Seliph gladly accepts, and brother and sister are together again. Musar falls quickly, and without his reinforcements, Grutia falls even quicker. As a last resort, Arion deploys 3 squadrons of Dragon knights, meant to retake Mease, Kaphatogia and Luthecia. He also goes into the field to guard the road to Thracia, wielding the Gungnir. Arion's defensive prowess poses a threat, but eventually Seliph's army manages to defeat him and his armies. Like Ishtar before him, Julius appears before him and commands him to follow him. They both warp away, leaving the road open for Seliph.

Now Seliph finds himself in Miletos, one of the smallest countries in Jugdral. This province has not escaped the tyrannical rule of Grannvale, and child hunts are becoming more and more common. Also, Seliph reflects on the fact that Miletos's northern coast borders the land of his father, Chalphy. However, to get there, Seliph must pass long and ardorous threats. Queen Hilda of Chronos, Ishtar's mother, is the first one, wielding a Bolganone. Next is Ridale riding with an army of knights. Also, some Loptyrian Cultarians are in charge of Rados and Miletos. At Peruluke, Julia is abducted by Manfroy. Julius brings Ishtar to Chronos to gather views on Seliph's army. After Julius leaves, Hilda comments on the attachment Julius shows for Ishtar. Julius also orders to continue with the child hunts. However, some children escape Chronos. Ridale is deployed mainly to deal with the kids rather than face with Seliph. However, both Ridale and Hilda fall, and Chronos and Rados are seized by Seliph. This provokes the northern gate to be unsealed allowing Seliph passage into northern Miletos, and eventually seize Miletos. However, the whole Loptyrian Cult takes to the field in hopes of destroying Seliph's army. Also, Julius and Ishtar take the field trying to play a game of who takes the first victim. However, if you defeat Julius or Ishtar, both will teleport to safety. Miletos falls to Seliph, allowing him free passage to Chalphy. However, Chalphy is defended by none other than Emperor Arvis himself, wielding the sacred Valflame. Before his battle with Seliph, Arvis sends a priest to lead some captive children to safety. He also gives the priest, Palmark, the Tyrfing, in hopes that Seliph might acquire it. He also talks with Julia, revealing to her that he is her father, and that he regretted letting Julius destroy Deirdre and almost killing her. Julia harbors no ill will towards her father. However, Manfroy appears and demands Julia. Arvis barely has time to give Julia the Circlet of Deirdre, claiming that it will protect her in the future. Manfroy also deploys a squadron of Dark mages to pursue the escaping children. Arvis's army is tough, but eventually Seliph's army manages to break his lines and attack the dark mages. The priest will give then the Tyrfing to Seliph, who then goes to Chalphy to battle Arvis and avenge Sigurd's death. If Seliph defeats Arvis, he can have a conversation with Sigurd and Deirdre, who warn him of the trials ahead. Regardless, Chalphy is captured, and Belhalla is now in sight.

After Seliph reclaimed Chalphy, he had to face the other Dukedoms of Grannvale along with the Prince of Darkness Julius, and Archbishop Manfroy of the Loptyrian Cult. Meanwhile, Julius finds out that his father, Emperor Arvis, was killed, and Manfroy explains that he was too influenced by the Crusader Fjalar, would have turned against them eventually, and that Arvis was no longer of use to them. Julius then talks to his sister Julia (who was brought to Velthomer by Manfroy), who says how she misses her brother and that Julius had changed over the past 7 years when Manfroy brought in the Dark tome of Loptous. She denies that he is her brother. Julius responds to this by saying that he is the Dark Lord Loptous and that he has been sent to this world to rule it. He then says he will kill Julia because she inherited the blood of Loptous's mortal enemy, Naga. Manfroy then interrupts and asks to make use of Julia as a means of dominance over the royal family of Heim, to which Julius reluctantly agrees. He then teleports back to Belhalla, giving orders to the Granbellian Dukedoms to engage Seliph's army at Chalphy, while Seliph and his army were making preparations for the final battle. Lewyn explains to Seliph that Julius is the reincarnation of the Dark Lord Loptous and that he is planning on reviving the Loptyrian Empire. He also gives background information about Bishop Galle and how the Loptyrian Empire had started and who Loptous really was.

Seliph prepares to take action on the Dukedom of Edda first, since Edda, under command of Bishop Rodan and a Loptyrian Cultarian, had already deployed their priests and mercenary brigades to battle with Seliph along with several Dark Mages on the cliffs near Chalphy to back them up. Seliph eventually ends up facing all the other Dukedoms as well, with each one being guarded by a Dark Bishop under orders from Julius (possibly as watch guards to ensure the dukedoms follow the Loputo Sect's orders). After conquering Edda (where he and Lewyn have a discussion about the late Duke Claud), Seliph faces the Grauen Ritter along with Duke Brian of Dozel, the eldest son of Danann (whom Seliph's army had killed back at Isaach), who swears to avenge his house. He attacks Chalphy, and the Dozellian guard commanded by Fisher, who attacks Edda, and is eventually defeated despite his possession of the Holy Helswath Axe. Brian was surprised that he was defeated with the Helswath and questions if he was on the right side. When Seliph's forces defeated the Dark Bishop at Dozel and subjugated the castle, Lewyn tells Seliph about who the gods (or dragonkin) are, and how the 12 Crusader lineages were created, along with some information and history about the last Holy War. Lewyn also explains that Julia is Seliph's younger half-sister, and that she was the one who inherited the blood of Naga from the late Empress Deirdre.

After Seliph had conquered Dozel, his armies went west to attack Freege, and he was caught in an ambush between Freege's Gelben Ritter, led by the sinister Duchess Hilda, and Jungby's Beige Ritter, led by Andorey's son, Duke Scipio. When Seliph had defeated both armies (plus the Loptyrian Cultarians at Freege sent from Belhalla) and subjugated Freege, Seliph meets someone by the name of Felipe who explains to him that he was an attendant of Emperor Arvis and that he was ordered to protect the children from the child hunts. He also explains that Princess Ishtar of Freege volunteered to help out with the children secretly. Seliph was surprised by this and realizes that Ishtar is a caring person and that she had helped the children escape from the start. Seliph then asks Lewyn where Julia is. Lewyn thinks that she is either in Velthomer or Belhalla and that Seliph will have to get her himself. After Seliph had captured the House of Freege, Ishtar sets out to deploy the Weissen Ritter, the elite imperial guard of Belhalla, to engage Seliph's army, with assistance from Meng, Maybell, and Bleg, powerful Falcon Knight sisters and descendants of Forseti who were sent from Silesse to assist the Weissen Ritter. Julius questions Ishtar's loyalty, asking why she is so eager to go out into the battle, but Ishtar responds that she is still loyal and loves Julius all the same, and that she "took great pride in being a warlock of Freege". He reluctantly agrees to Ishtar's request in the end, and the Weissen Ritter engages Seliph's army.

Julius then proclaims that it was "time to wrap this up". He gives orders to have Arion's mercenary squad deploy and attack Chalphy (Arion having been rescued by Julius back in Thracia), and orders the twelve Dark Warlords to come out and defend Belhalla. Manfroy subsequently takes the hint, and deploys his elite Dark Mages around Velthomer, Manfroy himself defending the castle, while he sends the hypnotized Julia to attack Seliph.

After a time, Prince Arion of Thracia and his Dragon Knight squadron appear over a lake south of Edda, and start flying towards Chalphy. Altena intercepts them, however, and convinces Arion that he was lost in foolish pride, and he decides to fight for Altena. He and his squad become allied with her. Meanwhile, Seliph and his army engaged and defeated Ishtar, the Falcoknight sisters, and the Weissen Ritter after a long and harsh battle, and then made for Belhalla and Velthomer. On the way, they come in contact with Julia, under Manfroy's trance. Seliph tries to turn her back to normal, but Lewyn comments that she was under a trance, and the only way to undo it was to kill Manfroy. Seliph then charges for Velthomer with his best knights while the rest of his army distract Julia, defend Freege, and ready for an assault on Belhalla. He encounters Manfroy and kills him, subsequently conquering Velthomer. When there, he has a discussion with Lewyn and Felipe, who say that the Naga Tome was placed in a vault by Emperor Arvis, and that only Empress Deirdre's Circlet could open it. Seliph then remembers Julia, and charges towards her. With Manfroy dead, she was able to snap out of her trance, and headed towards Velthomer, where Lewyn waited, and took possession of the Naga tome, the only weapon that could counteract the effects of the Loptous tome.

With Ishtar and Manfroy dead, and Arion and Julia allied with Seliph's army, Seliph finally attacks the Imperial capital, Belhalla. Though the Dark Warlords put up quite a fight, and Julius gave covering fire with his Meteor spell, the Warlords were defeated, and Seliph and Julia went to attack Belhalla on their own, since no one else could stand up to Julius' abilities. Julius was defeated by the energies of Naga and Seliph's Tyrfing, and Loptous says his last words to Seliph through Julius, saying that as long as evil lies in men's hearts, he shall always return. Julius dies, and the Dark Dragon Loptous rises up out of his body and returns to the netherworld, causing all the remnants of the Loptyrian Empire to die along with Julius.

Seliph then conquers Belhalla, and all the participants in his armies go to their respective homes in Jugdral, their partners and/or relatives going along with them as well. Seliph himself becomes the new ruler of Grannvale and Julia becomes the imperial princess of it. (If Seliph managed to get a partner, his partner becomes queen.) If any house had no one to take over its control, then it is given into subjugation by Belhalla.

Spending most of his life on the run, Leif eventually finds shelter in the village of Fiana. One day, the villager's protectors are routing bandits when the new Duke of Manster Raydrik attacks the village in search of Leif, kidnapping Leif's friends Nanna and Mareeta. Devastated by the town's destruction and his friends' abductions, Leif decides to face the forces of Thracia and retake Manster. Aided by Finn and a growing band of rebels, he rescues both Nanna and the enemy-controlled Mareeta, and defeating Raydrik's forces as they retake Manster and liberate northern Thracia. Leif's forces finally face Raydrik in battle, but upon his defeat he is transformed into an undead monster called Deadlord Mus. Leif destroys Mus, and cements his forces defending Manster and northern Thracia from the Grannvale army.

Roy, the son of Marquess Eliwood of Pherae, a district of Lycia, is studying in Ostia, Lycia's capital, when he is called back home to lead Pherae's army to join up with the rest of Lycia's armies at Araphen, in order to defend against possible attacks by Bern, Eliwood being too ill to lead the army himself. Upon arriving in Pherae, he finds that the castle and surrounding villages are under attack by bandits. Eliwood is defending the castle as best he can, but his illness is preventing him from being very effective. Ostia's Princess Lilina, a young mage who had gone to Pherae ahead of Roy, is also holed up in the castle. Roy must fight to save his father and friend.

After defeating the bandits, Eliwood charges Roy with taking Pherae's army to Araphen, and provides him the services of Merlinus, a merchant who works for Pherae. Meanwhile, Lilina returns to Ostia. Roy heads north towards Araphen, and stops at a village near the Bern border to wait for some reinforcements. While he is waiting, a young cleric named Elen runs into him and begs him to help her save her mistress from a nearby Bern castle. Merlinus doesn't like this, but then Bern soldiers appear and they become forced to fight. During the battle, Dieck's mercenary group arrives to bolster Roy's forces.

It turns out that Elen's mistress is none other than Princess Guinivere of Bern. She wishes to meet with a Lycian leader to see if there is anything she can do to avoid the outbreak of war, and Roy offers to take her to see Hector.

Once they reach Araphen, though, horrible news is waiting for them: Bern's army has already attacked and obliterated the combined forces of most of the Lycian territories. Roy's army is able to retake Araphen Castle, and they find Hector locked up in the dungeon—however, his wounds are too serious for him to live much longer. He informs Roy that the major reason for the horrific defeat was that Bern was using Dragons, and tells Roy that he must become the leader of what remains of Lycia's armies, before passing away. Roy decides to head to Ostia to regroup, and inform Lilina about her father's death.

With the Lycian alliance in shambles, the Marquess of Laus, Erik, makes a pact with Bern and the Dragon General Narcian and betrays the Lyican alliance. Roy and his army later travel through Laus's territory and are attacked by Erik and Laus's army, but the latter is soundly defeated.

On the way, they save a village from bandits, and are met by Saul, a representative of the Elimine Church. He reveals that Guinivere has actually stolen the Fire Emblem from Bern, and questions her as to why. He and his bodyguard, the archer Dorothy, join Roy.

Passing through Thria, they stop at Thria Castle in order to pay respects to Hector's cousin Orun, who runs that area. However, treachery is afoot and Orun's advisor, Wagner, has assassinated Orun and taken control of the castle, also taking Sue, a Sacaen Princess, who was under Orun's care, prisoner. He attempts to ambush Roy, but Roy is warned of his plans by a thief in the area, Cath, and he is able to defeat Wagner and save Sue.

Having arrived in Ostia, things are not looking well. General Leygance has revolted and taken control of the city, along with most of Ostia's remaining army, and taken Lilina prisoner. He's planning to keep Lilina as a hostage only for a short time, though; secretly, he wants her to be murdered during the fray. Roy first has to make it to the castle, as the streets of Ostia are swarming with Ostian rebellers, as well as a Wyvern Rider unit lent from Bern. Fortunately, he has some help from some Ilian mercenaries led by Zelot, who were hired by Hector and have refused to join the rebellion. Once he finally makes it inside the castle, he gets further help in the form of Barth's unit of Ostian loyalists, saves Lilina, and defeats Leygance, putting an end to the rebellion.

Lilina joins Roy's quest and tells him that she was entrusted with information as to the whereabouts of the legendary sword, Durandal, by her father. So they head the cave it is kept in to retrieve it. While they are gone, however, Narcian and a Bern Wyvern unit overrun Ostia. It seems that the recovery of the city was for naught; however, shortly afterwards, Etruria's Mage General Cecilia and Knight General Perceval bring several divisions of Etruria's army to the city and force Narcian to leave. Having only a fragmentary army, Roy places Lycia under Etrurian protection for the time being.

As part of the deal, Etruria is allowed to use Lycia's army for its own purposes. And so they send Roy and the army to the Western Isles to deal with the numerous bandit problems they are having. Guinivere is left in Cecilia's care. Bandits do indeed seem to be a big problem on the Isles, as just as soon as they arrive, they come under attack by a group of them. But things are not always as they seem, and after speaking to locals of the area, Roy discovers that it is actually the Etrurian nobility on the isles that, in most cases, is behind the bandit activities. Roy heads to various areas on the Isles to help the citizenry, where he meets the bard Elffin and the dancer Larum, along with other members of the force resisting the Etrurians on the islands, who confirm that this is indeed the case. And so Roy heads to the capital, Jutes, to end the oppression. It was here where Roy first saw for himself one of Bern's Dragons.

After crushing the head of Etrurian corruption in the Western Isles, Roy begins to return to Etruria to make his report to Cecilia. Before that, however, first they visit a cave near Jutes in order to search for another one of the Divine Weapons, the Thunder Axe Armads. Upon leaving the cave, having found the weapon, though, they are greeted with terrible news: Etruria's Roartz and Arcard have overthrown King Mordred and given Etruria over to Bern. Cecilia has been forced to escape from the capital with Guinivere, and Percival and the Great General Douglas have been forced to work for Roartz lest they want the King killed. Cecilia is gathering an army to fight Roartz in Missur, but Bern's armies are closing on her position. So Roy immediately heads to help her.

But it seems they are too late, as King Zephiel defeats Cecilia in one hit, seriously injures her, and captures his sister Guinivere. However, all is not lost. Zephiel makes the mistake of leaving the defense of Missur to Narcian, who leaves for other places, leaving his lieutenant Flaer in charge. Furthermore, he leaves Guinivere in the care of her personal guard, Miledy, who cares more about Guinivere's wishes than Bern's. And so Guinivere convinces Milady to join the Lycian Army, and Roy retakes Missur. Cecilia's wounds have been treated by Sophia, a Shaman from Arcadia, who was locked in the dungeon with her, and she is well enough to join the army along with Sophia as well.

Bern's army is attacking Arcadia, the City of Dragons. Roy heads to their rescue. A blinding sandstorm reduces visibility and makes it hard to move, but the Lycian Army manages to make it to Arcadia and defeat the occupying force before Bern's reinforcements arrive. While there, they retrieve the Divine Anima magic, Forblaze, from the temple, and learn more about Dragons and The Scouring from the elders.

Roy sets off to return to Etruria to put an end to Roartz's rebellion. However, Fae, a young Manakete from Arcadia, tries to follow him and ends up being captured by Bern forces, resulting in Roy having to go to her rescue. Elffin also manages to convince Perceval, who had come to attack the Lycian Army under orders from Roartz, to join Roy's side, by revealing his secret identity.

Dragon General Murdock informs Narcian that King Zephiel is furious with Narcian for failing to take the Western Isles, Arcadia, and failing to detain Guinivere, and is ordered to take charge the defense of the capital of Etruria, Aqueleia, as well as demoting him from Dragon General and promoting Galle in his stead. As Roy's army storms the castle, Roartz and Arcard escape out a secret entrance. Narcian falls, and Roy and Douglas reinstate the King. Douglas and the head of the Elimine Church, Yodel, then take Roy to the Elimine Church's tower, also known as the Pinnacle of Light, where the Divine Light magic, Aureola, resides.

Having returned Etruria to its own control, stifled the corruption on the Western Isles, and with Lycia still under Etrurian protection, there remained the occupied countries of Ilia and Sacae, along with Bern itself, still hostile. Roy led the combined might of the Lycian and Etrurian armies through either Sacae or Ilia (depending on certain factors of your gameplay), to hit Bern from the north. Along they way, they fought Roartz and Arcard, left by the Dragon Generals Brunya or Murdock (Brunya if in Sacae, Murdock if in Ilia) to guard locations in those countries in return for running away from Etruria. During the trip, they acquired one more Divine weapon, and at the border of Bern, Yodel came to join the party with another; the bow, Murgleis (if you went to Ilia), or the lance, Maltet (if you went to Sacae), he also carried with him the Saint's Staff.

Progressing south through Bern they come across the Shrine of Seals, guarded by the Dragon Generals Murdock and Galle. It is a difficult fight, with masses of Wyvern reinforcements, but Roy prevails. And upon reaching the shrine, they find an entrance into its eerie depths... within, they find the seventh Divine weapon, the Dark Magic Apocalypse. Upon returning to the surface, Roy proceeds to the altar containing the Binding Blade and places the Fire Emblem into the handle, unsealing the sword. Through its power, he is spontaneously promoted to Master Lord.

The army then assaults the capital of Bern. Roy and company invade the castle, and find that Zephiel has locked himself in the center of the castle, in an area which can only be opened from the outside by the Fire Emblem. Unfortunately for him, Roy has the jewel, and Zephiel falls. Taking possession of Zephiel's Eckesachs, the eighth and final Divine weapon, causes the set to resonate and show Roy the location of the Dragon Temple, where Idunn, the Demon Dragon responsible for creating Bern's War Dragon army, resides. They immediately set off for this location, to try to stop Idunn from carrying out Zephiel's orders even after his death.

Along the way, they run into Brunya, the last Wyvern General standing. She attempts to stop Roy from entering the temple, but ultimately fails, and the last of Bern's resistance dies with her. However, a more fierce opponent awaited them inside the temple: Jahn, a real Manakete, not one of Idunn's War Dragons. He had remained hidden here for a thousand years regaining his strength after taking a grievous wound in the Scouring, and was the one who informed Zephiel about Idunn's existence. However, even he succumbed to Roy, supported by the Divine weapons.

Finally, Roy entered Idunn's chamber. He attempted to persuade her to stop following Zephiel's orders, but in her soulless state, that was not possible. There was no choice left but to fight her. Striking the final blow with the Binding Blade, which had sealed her 1000 years ago, there was a flash and her draconic form disintegrated, leaving her in her human form, unconscious. Without the power of the Dark Dragon to keep it stable, the weight of 1000 years came down on the Dragon Temple, causing it to fall to pieces.

Guinivere became the new ruler of Bern, despite her fears that she would be despised by the populace for her 'treachery'. Lilina took up her role as leader of the Lycian League and Elffin returned to Etruria. The world was at peace once more, but the work had just begun. There was much repair work needed for areas which had been struck by the war, and many positions previously filled by traitors such as Roartz needed to be refilled.

Idunn was taken to Arcadia, where the elders restored her soul to her body. Despite this, it was expected that she would never recover from over a millennium as a Demon Dragon. However, that was not true as Idunn smiled and laughed after a fruit fell on Fae's head. After experiencing that, Fae went on to tell Roy that she laughed. As Idunn following her, she feel a warm breeze after a breeze came by.

The game's narrative starts in the plains of Sacae. The player character, a Tactician (a male named Mark, born in January, by default), is found by a girl named Lyn. She was recently orphaned due to bandits attacking her tribe, and decides to travel with Mark. In a nearby town they meet Kent and Sain, who reveal that Lyn is heir to the throne of Caelin. However, Lyn's existence is an obstacle to Lundgren, the brother of Lyn's grandfather Hausen, who desires to succeed his brother as the marquess. Lundgren continually attempts to kill Lyn and her grandfather.

Before setting out for Caelin, Lyn, Kent, and Sain visit a temple in order to pray before the Mani Katti, a sacred blade. After defeating attacking group of mercenaries and rescuing the priest, Lyn discovers that she is the chosen wielder of the Mani Katti. Lyn travels from Sacae to Caelin, meeting new allies and enemies along the way. Among these are the bard Nils and his sister, the dancer Ninian, who are being pursued by a shadowy organization known as the Black Fang. Lyn eventually arrives at Lundgren's stronghold, defeats him, and reunites with her grandfather.

One year later (Post-Scouring year 980), Lyn's friend Eliwood is leaving Pherae in search of his missing father, Marquess Elbert of Pherae. As he and his escorts prepare to leave the area, bandits attack a local village. Mark, the Tactician, is at the village, and Eliwood acquires the aid of Mark and other characters to take down the bandits. In Ostia, Marquess Uther did not want to take action in the disappearance of Elbert, but his younger brother and Eliwood's friend, Hector sets out to assist Eliwood. Eliwood then heads to Santaruz, where he meets his friend Hector, brother of Marquess Uther of Ostia. Marquess Santaruz’s dying words direct the group to Laus, where it is revealed that Marquess Laus is working with the Black Fang, a group of assassins, and intends to take over the world. With him is a mysterious man named Ephidel. Marquess Laus sends his son Erik to kill Eliwood and Hector. After the capture of Castle Laus, Erik confesses that one year ago, Ephidel came to Laus and persuaded Marquess Darin of Laus to rebel against Ostia. Elbert, although he distrusted Ephidel, also supported this plan; Eliwood does not believe that his father could have done so. During the night stay in the castle, Hector and his men fend off an attack sent by one Eubans.

A couple of days later, Eliwood is informed that Castle Caelin has fallen to an attack from the remains of Laus's army. Eliwood meets up with Lyn and her allies, and they recapture the castle and rescue Marquess Caelin. The group then meets the Ostian spy Leila, who is working undercover in the Black Fang. She informs them that the Black Fang, responsible for all that has happened, is controlled by Nergal, a mysterious man who wants to start a war in Lycia for unknown reasons. In addition, Ephidel is a "morph", a humanoid creature created through magic that serves Nergal. Elbert is being held captive at Valor Island, also known as the “Dread Isle.â€

Eliwood and his troops set sail to the island with the help of the pirate captain Fargus. Along the way, they find Ninian in a small boat. She unfortunately has amnesia, and her brother Nils is not with her, which Lyn finds highly suspicious. Eliwood and company reach the island, but along the way, the group discovers Leila's corpse. Jaffar, one of the Black Fang’s Four Fangs, killed her when Ephidel discovered that she was a spy. After Eliwood finds the temple housing the Dragon's Gate, Ephidel captures Ninian, and Eliwood’s group assaults the temple to rescue her. After the battle, Eliwood finds his seriously injured father near the back of the temple. Nergal and Ephidel appear with the captured Ninian. Nergal feeds Elbert’s soul into Ninian, forcing her to summon a Dragon, but as it emerges from the portal, Nils comes in and brings Ninian to her senses. She immediately closes the portal, destroying both Ephidel and the dragon. Nergal attempts to take Ninian and Nils, but when Elbert wounds him, he flees to recover. Elbert then dies in his son's arms.

Eliwood and company head back to the mainland to inform Marquess Uther of what has been happening. Uther is troubled by the news, and suggests that Eliwood go to the Nabata Desert to meet a "living legend." This person turns out to be Archsage Athos, one of the veterans of the Scouring, whose lifespan has been lengthened because of his deep connection to magic. Eliwood assists a mysterious Sage in the desert named Pent, who turns out to be the Mage General of Etruria. Athos tells them to find the Shrine of Seals in Bern if they want to stand a chance against Nergal.

After Athos teleports Eliwood's troops back to Pherae, they travel to Bern in disguise. When they reach Bern, they hear of Prince Zephiel's coming-of-age ceremony, during which Pent and his wife Louise plan to ask Hellene, the Queen of Bern and Louise's close friend, about the location of the Shrine of Seals. As the group gathers more information on the Black Fang, whose headquarters are in Bern, they are attacked by one of the sons of Brendan Reed, the leader of the Black Fang. After subduing him, Eliwood persuades him that they are not his enemy, at which point the brother decides to track Sonia, Brendan Reed's wife and the woman Nergal is using to control the Black Fang. However, Nergal's morph Limstella kills him. The other Reed brother, showing up later and finding his brother dead, blames Eliwood.

Queen Hellene agrees to provide Eliwood with the location of the Shrine of Seals if he recovers the missing Fire Emblem, necessary for Zephiel's ceremony. Lyn traces the Black Fang to their mountain fortress, where they hear that Jaffar is to carry out a contract to kill Zephiel. Eliwood returns to the Bern Manse and saves Prince Zephiel from a Black Fang assassination, meeting Jaffar and Nino, Sonia’s adopted daughter, along the way. A grateful Hellene then gives them a map to the Shrine of Seals.

The group stops by at the Black Fang's secondary base, the Water Temple, where Sonia kills Brendan Reed and Limstella absorbs his quintessence for Nergal. Nino and Jaffar confront Sonia about Nino's parentage, and Sonia reveals that Nino is indeed not really her child, but the daughter of a clan of magic users that she and Nergal killed. Eliwood's troops step in to defend Nino and Jaffar, and finally defeat Sonia. Limstella shows up, but does not absorb Sonia's quintessence because she does not have any, as she was a morph; she just leaves Sonia to die of her wounds, alone in the temple, still thinking she is human.

Eliwood makes it to the Shrine of Seals, where he defeats the remaining Reed brother. Athos teleports in and takes the group into the Shrine to talk to the other remaining legend, the cautious magic user Bramimond. After talking with Athos, Bramimond is persuaded to open the seals on the legendary weapons used to slay the dragons. Outside the Shrine, a fully healed Nergal shows up and tries to take Ninian and Nils. To defend her brother and gain time, Ninian goes with him in exchange for Nils' safety.

Eliwood goes to the tomb of Roland and collects the sword Durandal from its resting place, while Hector retrieves the axe Armads. As Eliwood leaves, an Ice Dragon attacks him, and Durandal, seemingly activated on its own, slays the Dragon, which is revealed to be Ninian. Nergal returns to gloat, telling Eliwood that Ninian lost most of her memory when she became a Dragon, and that the only thing remaining was her love towards Eliwood. Ninian uses her last quintessence to change back to her human form and dies in Eliwood’s arms. Enraged, Athos attempts to kill Nergal with the spell Forblaze, but fails. Eliwood and Hector leave the legendary weapons in Athos' care.

Back in Ostia, as Eliwood's group recuperates, Athos tells them about Nergal's past. He and Nergal, once friends, came across the hidden village of Arcadia, where humans and dragons lived in peace. Nergal spent his time there learning the secrets of acquiring quintessence, which slowly distorted his soul. Athos and the residents of Arcadia teamed up to defeat Nergal, but he managed to escape and fled to Bern, taking control of the Black Fang while he was there. Hector also learns that his brother has died.

Nergal, back at the Dragon's Gate, uses Ninian's quintessence to open the portal, but he does not have enough. Eliwood arrives at the Dread Isle and defeats Limstella. Nergal then channels quintessence from the most powerful human leaders and creates morph versions of them, sending them out to destroy Eliwood’s group, but they fail. Then Nergal himself appears but is also defeated; with his dying breath, he summons three Fire Dragons. Bramimond intervenes and uses his remaining power to resurrect Ninian, who kills two and severely wounds the third. Eliwood's group, using the legendary weapons, manages to slay the last Dragon. After the battle, Athos collapses from exhaustion, and as he dies, predicts that "an evil star will rise... over Bern... but once again, Lycia will bring hope to cleanse the darkness," referring to the events of the previous game, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, to which Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade is a prequel.

One year later, Eliwood is crowned Marquess of Pherae in his father's place, and soon Hector is crowned as Marquess of Ostia in his brother's place.

Fifteen years later, Eliwood and Hector meet each other in Castle Ostia, where Eliwood introduces his son Roy and Hector introduces his daughter Lilina. While the children play, Eliwood and Hector talk about some events in Bern related to Archsage Athos' predictions. Interestingly, Lyn isn't mentioned although this may be because she has no role in The Binding Blade, or simply because she can marry either Eliwood or Hector. In the final scene of the game, Zephiel, now the King of Bern, is talking with an enigmatic man, who is inquiring him as to why he awoke the Demon Dragon. To these, Zephiel simply makes a chilling smile.

In the Year of the Stone 803, the Grado Empire, a long-standing ally of Renais, launched a surprise attack on Renais, ordered by Emperor Vigarde. Renais is unable to mount resistance against such a swift and forceful attack. Prince Ephraim of Renais is nowhere to be found as Grado sweeps through territory after territory. King Fado of Renais orders his trusted general, Seth, to take his daughter Princess Eirika to safety in neighboring Frelia while he stays behind in order to discover the motives behind Grado's sudden attack.

King Hayden of Frelia helps Eirika and suggests that she remain until Prince Ephraim returns, however she is determined to find him and goes to Grado. Aided by several of Hayden's retainers, Eirika travels towards Grado where her brother was last seen. Passing through Renais once again, they see first-hand the devastation caused by the war. Even more troubling is the appearance of foul undead creatures throughout the world. In the village of Serafew, Eirika encounters a former Grado cleric called Natasha. She tells Eirika of Emperor Vigarde's plan to destroy the Sacred Stones that safeguard the land from evil.

Meanwhile, Prince Ephraim has been causing havoc in Grado territory. As part of his guerrilla campaign to disrupt Grado's military efficiency, he decides to capture the strategic Fort Renvall. However, after a brilliant tactical victory, he is forced to flee by Grado's army.

After recovering Eirika's bracelet from a mysterious man, Seth reveals its true importance; along with Ephraim's bracelet, they open the secret door to Renais's Sacred Stone. Eirika presses on to Fort Renvall, hot on Ephraim's trail. Inside, she finds Orson, one of Ephraim's guards. He offers to lead her to Ephraim's prison cell. However, Orson has betrayed Renais for a chance to resurrect his wife and traps Eirika inside the fort, forcing her to fight her way through. During the battle, Ephraim arrives and with their combined strength, they seize the fort.

After their reunion, they return to Frelia to plan their next move. They wonder what happened to the peace-loving Prince Lyon of Grado who would surely disapprove of his father's war.

[view]
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is a Japanese tactical role-playing game for the Game Boy Advance developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. It was released on October 7, 2004 in Japan, and was later localized and released on May 23, 2005 in North America. It is the eighth game in the Fire Emblem series, the third and final game in the series to be released for the Game Boy Advance and the second game in the series to be released outside Japan.
The game builds on the game mechanics used in the previous two Game Boy Advance Fire Emblem titles; Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade and Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade; but takes place on a different continent. Set on the continent of Magvel, the plot focuses on royal twins Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim as they investigate why a longtime ally has chosen to invade their nation's borders and the sudden appearance of monsters all over Magvel.

Though it received positive reviews, The Sacred Stones was criticized for making only superficial improvements over the previous game. Reviews also stated that the new "World Map" feature made the game too easy. Despite these comments, the game received an average rating of 85 percent on Game Rankings and has sold over 300,000 copies in Japan.

The Sacred Stones was represented in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, with music and stickers.

Development Edit
Development of The Sacred Stones began at some point after Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. Most of the game's development was handled by external staff (mostly from Flagship; notably, Senri Kita became involved with Fire Emblem during this time). According to the Making of Fire Emblem book, it was because of Flagship's founder, Yoshiki Okamoto, that The Sacred Stones was released before Path of Radiance.

The game was designed as a tribute to Fire Emblem Gaiden and thus shares many features from its predecessor, such as a traversable world map, dual Lords, split route, multiple promotion options, and optional battles outside of the main story.

Reception Edit
Reviewers have praised the level of attention that the game gives to the storyline and each individual unit, but have commented on the frustration that can be caused by some gameplay features inherent to the series, such as the fact that character death is permanent. The game has also been criticized for not improving upon gameplay mechanics as much as expected from a sequel (perhaps unaware that the series has in fact been going on for quite a while). As well as lack of innovation in gameplay, reviewers have also noted that the presentation has not changed much from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. Overall, reviewers acknowledge that the game has the same solid gameplay and replay value that was present in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, despite the lack of originality.

SettingEdit
The Sacred Stones takes place on the continent of Magvel. It is home to six nation-states, with each nation having their own unique culture and variant governments ranging from monarchy's to a democrat-republic type nation:

Renais: The kingdom of Renais is ruled by Fado, the peerless Warrior King. It is the home of the twin lords Ephraim and Eirika.
Frelia: The kingdom of Frelia is ruled by Hayden, the venerable Sage King and the father of the pegasus knight Tana and the sniper Innes. Frelia is also home to pegasi which are trained for military purposes.
Jehanna: The kingdom of Jehanna is ruled by Ismaire, the Queen of the White Dunes. Her son is Joshua, the myrmidon. Since the nation exists mostly out of desert, there seem to be a heavy focus on being a mercenary in order to earn your daily bread.
Rausten: The theocracy of Rausten is ruled by Mansel, the Divine Emperor, where in he claims to be a descendant of the saintly Latona. His heir is his niece L'Arachel, the troubadour. It was founded by the saintly Latona, one of the Five Heroes.
Grado: The Grado Empire is ruled by Vigarde, the Silent Emperor. His son, the necromancer Lyon, is a good friend of Ephraim and Eirika, who are appalled and confused by Grado's sudden betrayal. Grado is the largest country of Magvel and its eponymous founder, Grado, was the leader of the Five Heroes who stood against the Demon King. It is the main antagonistic country in the game.
Carcino: The emerging mercantile republic of Carcino is governed by a council of elders, and, unlike the other nations of Magvel, is more of a democratic-republic nation than a monarchy or theocracy. It was established more recently than the other nations and is the only nation not founded by one of the Five Heroes.
StoryEdit

Eirika, Ephraim and Lyon
Ephraim and Eirika, meeting the shy Lyon for the first time.

Eirika and Ephraim decide to enlist the help of the other nations in combating the global threat posed by Grado's aggressive campaign to destroy the Sacred Stones. To save time, they decide that Eirika will sail to warn Rausten of the war, Prince Innes of Frelia will go to warn Jehanna and Ephraim will attack Castle Grado directly.

At the port, no ship will sail because of a ghost ship that terrorizes the seas (dealt with on Ephraim's route). She has no choice but to take the overland route to Rausten, which goes through the Republic of Carcino, the only country in Magvel with no ties to a Sacred Stone. There, Eirika finds Prince Innes and his group under attack by Carcino soldiers under orders from Councilman Pablo, who has allied with Grado. After triumphing against the mercenary army, they discover Councilman Klimt, the man who Pablo was hunting and trying to assassinate with his mercenaries. Klimt tells her that Pablo was the one who decided to side with Grado, and that not all of Carcino was against Renais.

United with Innes, they continue their march towards Jehanna. During a run-in with some monsters along the way, they are joined by a zealous monster-hunter called L'Arachel and her cheerful bodyguard Dozla. To avoid more conflict, they take a mountainous route through the secluded village of Caer Pelyn, led by a young mage called Ewan. In a mountain valley on their journey to Jehanna, they are confronted by Glen, the Sunstone general of the Grado empire. Eirika convinces him to let her proceed. Not long after she leaves, Valter confronts Glen and assassinates him.

When the army reaches Caer Pelyn, they are again attacked by monsters. Ewan's mentor Saleh offers to guide them to Jehanna. At the midpoint from Caer Pelyn to Jehanna, the group passes through Hamill Canyon. Meanwhile, Valter has returned to the Grado capital and shown Glen's brother, Cormag, the corpse of the former general. Valter tells Cormag that Glen was killed by Eirika. Outraged, Cormag flies to Hamill canyon to get revenge. The two forces meet, but Eirika convinces Cormag of the truth and he joins her to gain revenge on Valter.

When they finally arrive in Jehanna, they find the Palace under siege by Grado. After a long and tiring battle, Eirika discovers the Queen Ismaire of Jehanna, mortally wounded by the axe of Grado's Tiger Eye General Caellach. Even worse, Jehanna's Sacred Stone has been destroyed. With her dying breath, Queen Ismaire calls to her son Joshua, a young myrmidon whom Eirika met in Serafew and the disguised prince. While these events took place, enemy soldiers had set fire to the palace.

Barely escaping with their lives, Eirika finds herself trapped between the forces of two of Grado's generals: Caellach and Valter. In the middle of a desperate escape, Ephraim rushes to her aid with reinforcements. The joined quest begins.

After splitting up with his sister, Ephraim ventures to Grado. During this journey, he encounters many forces from Grado alongside mercenary groups attempting to capture him. First, in Fort Rigwald, Ephraim finds Tana, the princess of Frelia, and frees her from her kidnappers. Next, he recruits Duessel, the Obsidian General in Grado's army and Ephraim's former training master, who is dubious of the intentions of Emperor Vigarde. Duessel mentions a "Dark Stone" to Ephraim, a substance that Lyon extraced from Grado's Sacred Stone. The group suspects that the occult powers of the Dark Stone are the cause of Emperor Vigarde's change in personality.

During the same battle in which Duessel switches allegiances, Duessel encounters Cormag, a Wyvern Rider whose brother, Glen, has been murdered (see Eirika's story). Duessel convinced him to join Ephraim.

Ephraim takes a sea route to Grado, but is hindered by a ghost ship said to be sinking any ships it encounters. After he deals with the problem and arrives in Grado, he is attacked by Grado forces combined with monsters sent by the Blood Beryl, Riev. Shortly after, in the Za'albul Marsh, Ephraim defeats General Selena Fluorspar, receiving a dragonstone stolen from his friend Myrrh. Ephraim arrives in Grado Keep and defeats Emperor Vigarde, who, bizarrely, cannot speak. Following the battle with Ephraim, Vigarde's body crumbles to dust.

Lyon appears to Ephraim, and tells Ephraim that they are now enemies and that it was he that started the war. Ephraim learns the secret of the Dark Stone (also known as the Fire Emblem) from Knoll, a researcher of ancient magic and assistant to Lyon before he discovered the Dark Stone. Ephraim then learns of his sister being ambushed by Caellach and Valter at Jehanna Hall. He rushes to meet her, still burdened by the knowledge that his former best friend was the cause of the war. He eventually reaches his destination and the two siblings are reunited.

Ephraim meets up with Eirika in the desert, and they defeat Caellach and Valter. When Ephraim and Eirika reunite their forces, they find Renais in a state of chaos, under the tyrannical rule of the traitor Orson. After they defeat him, they find a hideous creature in Orson's chamber that resembles his wife Monica. Monica's mannerisms resemble those of Emperor Vigarde, and they destroy her and discover that it was created by the same dark sorcery as the Emperor. After securing their homeland, Ephraim and Eirika receive Renais' legendary weapons Sieglinde and Siegmund, and their Sacred Stone. They decide to head to Rausten to secure the last remaining stone. As they continue, they are supposed to meet up with Frelian reinforcements, but all are killed by Grado remnants apart from their commander Syrene, who then joins Ephraim and Eirika's army. The twins meet Lyon, who has radically changed from the friend they once knew. He retreats into the mountains, and the twins give chase. This leads them into a trap filled with Gorgons and their hatching eggs that dot the mountains. However, the army is victorious over the sulphur fumes, demons, intense heat and molten magma, and one of the twins goes to confront Lyon.

When following Ephraim's quest, Ephraim approaches Lyon, who freezes Ephraim, takes the Sacred Stone, and crushes it. Ephraim argues with him and asks what happened to him. Lyon reveals that the possessed form is a drama and that everything he had done had been under his own free will.

Along Eirika's journey, Lyon's soul has been almost entirely consumed by the Demon King, with his body under the King's complete control. He convinces Eirika to give him the Stone by mimicking Lyon and saying that he needs the stone to drive out the Demon King, then crushes it. Lyon says that he will be in Darkling Woods, and teleports away.

Eirika and Ephraim take time to rest at Rausten Court and to obtain Rausten's Sacred Stone, the only surviving one. Rausten Court is invaded by the last Grado General, Riev, who seeks revenge for his exile years before. After repelling the attack, the army give chase to Darkling Woods to stop Lyon from performing a ceremony which he has tricked the last remaining piece of the real Lyon into believing will stop a natural disaster from occurring in Grado in the future. However, the ceremony only leads to the full resurrection of the mastermind behind all of these events: Fomortiis, the Demon King.

The army arrives in Darkling Woods and confronts the resurrected Formotiis. Although they seal his soul in the Sacred Stone, his body still attacks them. Eirika, Ephraim, and their army defeat him with the help of five countries' Sacred Twin weapons. Thus the war ends, and with his body destroyed, Formotiis is unable to be resurrected again.

In the aftermath, the remaining Sacred Stone is sealed away and peace returns to Magvel, though the continent is left in disarray after the war, as many places were destroyed, and the landslide prophesized to destroy Grado does occur. However, the future looks bright, as Eirika and Ephraim set about restoring their nation while deciding to aid Grado, vowing to achieve Lyon's wishes that all may live in peace and joy.

Ike, the son of Greil, begins the game as the newest member of his father's mercenary company, the Greil Mercenaries. The company operates within the borders of Crimea, a nation of humans (referred to as "beorc") that shares its southern border with Gallia, a nation of Beast laguz, or humanoids capable of transforming into animals. A few chapters into the game, a neighboring beorc nation, Daein, invades Crimea. Soon after, Ike comes across an unconscious woman in a forest that turns out to be the Crimean princess, Elincia Ridell Crimea. Faced with the ruthless Daein assault, Greil leads the mercenaries out of Crimea and towards Gallia, but is mortally wounded by a Daein general known only as the Black Knight. These events mark the beginning of a long journey that will take Ike, Elincia, and the mercenaries across the continent and back in an effort to defeat Daein and restore Crimea's royalty to the throne.

Over the course of the game, Ike and his companions must overcome long-held racial tensions between the beorc and laguz in order to form an alliance against their true enemy, Ashnard, King of Daein. In particular, Ike manages to reestablish relations between the beorc nation of Begnion and the few remaining members of the heron laguz clan, which was annihilated in an act of genocide known as the Serenes Massacre. With this accomplishment, Ike is given command of a patchwork army that he leads into Daein and finally back to Crimea, where he confronts the Black Knight and ultimately King Ashnard himself.

Fighting a hopeless struggle, the Dawn Brigade hears of a man who claims to be the son of Ashnard, Pelleas, the apparent heir to the Daein throne and leader of the Daein Liberation Army. When the Dawn Brigade finally meets up with this force in the eastern deserts, and discovering that he is a decent man, unlike his alleged father, they unite and begin the first real plans to free Daein from the occupational army.

Under Micaiah's command, the Daein Liberation army waged campaigns against the Begnion garrison across Daein, having a foothold in key locations across Daein and soon on the march back to the capitol of Daein, Nevassa. At the moment when they begin their march, it is also revealed that Begnion's empress Sanaki has taken notice of the atrocities committed in Daein, and has ordered all of Begnions remaining troops there to stand down. This angers Begnion's senators, who were largely responsible for the occupation and its cruelty. Still in lieu of the edict, they abandon the remaining occupational forces to their fate, causing its leader, General Jarod, to realize that the senator in charge of the occupation, Numida, had betrayed and framed him.

Knowing that Numida and the rest of the senate would work to silence Jarod and his soldiers, to prevent them from being implicated on the incidents, and knowing that the end was near, Jarod resolved to at least exact his revenge on Micaiah due to driving him to a corner. On the evening of a celebration at the news of Sanaki's intervention, Micaiah is completely surrounded by Jarod's forces after she left the celebration alone, seeking to kill her to put an end to the real symbol of hope of the Liberation Army, dismissing Pelleas as worthless in comparison to her.

As they close in to do the deed, a towering figure warps in to defend her, being none other than the Black Knight, presumed dead by Ike's hand during the war. With the sheer power of his bladework, the Black Knight worked with Micaiah to defeat Jarod and his soldiers, saving Micaiah in the process. Attempting to finish off Jarod himself, Jarod's aide Alder took the Black Knight's blow on behalf of his master. Upon the death of Jarod's loyal retainer, Micaiah calls the Black Knight to stay his hand against slaying him as well, in order to allow Jarod to bury his lost comrade, and face the apostle's judgement. Sothe soon arrived and instantly assumed the Black Knight to be a threat to Micaiah, but despite Sothe's objections the Black Knight swore to protect and serve Micaiah no matter what. While explaining the situation, Micaiah sensed an impending doom caused by her choice to spare Jarod.

The following day, Jarod retaliated with one last act of spiteful violence. Murdering a Begnion emissary, he took control of Daein Keep, and unleashed a catapult assault on the city of Nevassa to destroy it, terrorizing its helpless populace. Seeing this, prince Pelleas, having felt completely impotent as a ruler up to this point, finds the strength to rally his soldiers and retake the capitol. Led by Micaiah, the Daein Liberation Army marches in a siege, into the city and retakes it by force, slaying Jarod and the remaining occupational forces in the process.

With Daein finally freed, and Pelleas is crowned as King, signing an official declaration with Begnion to recognize Daein as a free country once more. However, both the Black Knight and Izuka disappear after the coronation without a trace. This leaves Micaiah to continue operating as General of Daein's forces until the country is rebuilt. In the meantime, the merchant convoy, along with Kurth, the wolves and Rafiel, finally having safe passage through Daein, head out through Crimea and ultimately to Gallia.

Once word reaches Crimea that Daein has been repatriated, the noble classes begin to fret at the possibility that Daein may reinvade. Seeing their still new Queen Elincia as inexperienced, they begin to press her relentlessly about the issue, which forces her, after a particularly grueling council session, to seek solace in the skies on her pegasus near the edge of her country. There she is found by the royal knight Marcia, who came to cheer her up. However, they both then spot the Heron princess Leanne and her bodyguard, the Raven Nealuchi, pursued relentlessly into Crimean skies by a unit of Begnion's wyvern knights, intent on selling them to the senators for profit. Without revealing her identity as queen, Elincia and Marcia step in to save the two laguz.

In the meantime, word is spreading throughout Crimea's backcountry of a rebel insurgency, led by one of the counts. After battling through a battalion of recruit soldiers, countryfolk and former soldiers Brom and Nephenee relay word to Elincia about the uprising, believing Count Ludveck to be responsible.

To settle matters and gain evidence of his treachery, Elincia sends her retainers, Lady Lucia and the two laguz emissaries Lethe and Mordecai to Ludveck's county of Felirae. There, they manage to uncover the documents which prove Ludveck's coup, but are nearly captured by his soldiers in the process.

At word of their escape, Ludveck orders the rebellion to begin, forming an army not far off from Melior. After escaping Ludveck's men, she reports her discoveries to Elincia. To answer this, Elincia sends her royal knights, led by Geoffrey to seize Ludveck. Upon arriving, however, they find the rebel army is severely undermanned and untrained. In actuality, they were merely an unwitting diversion while Ludveck's main force marched on Elincia's backup stronghold. In the process, Ludveck also managed to capture Lucia during further reconnaissance, taking her as a hostage.

As Ludveck's forces begin to overtake the stronghold, Elincia battles them directly. Lacking numbers to hold the fort, the Crimean Royal Knights manage to return in time to help rout the invading force. Ludveck is then captured and held as prisoner to await his sentence for treason. Here, he plays his final trump card, and brings Lucia out with the remainder of his troops, threatening to execute her if Elincia does not relinquish the throne to him. Despite the threat of losing her dearest friend and retainer, Elincia stands firm, refusing to let Ludveck go. She is then forced to watch as the last of the rebellion sets Lucia up to be hanged, despite the gathering crowd of booing citizens.

This last ditch effort is thwarted, however, as Lucia is rescued by the Greil Mercenaries, who quickly and efficiently rout the remaining resistance forces. Lucia saved, Elincia meets up with Ike, and thanks him for showing up to save her. Ike in turn reveals that, prior to leaving for Daein on his own investigation, Count Bastian had sniffed out Ludveck's insurgency, and hired the mercenaries to help handle the situation. Here, Elincia shares with Ike the news regarding Daein, and the return of the Black Knight.

After shattering the rebellion, they receive an unexpected visit from Ranulf, retainer to the beast king of Gallia. He warns that a war between the newly formed Laguz Alliance and Begnion is about to spark following Begnion's execution of Gallian messengers. Ike and the mercenaries pledge their support to the Laguz Alliance; however, they also fear that Lehran's Medallion, which was currently radiating with a blue flame of chaos, will release the dark god with the chaos of this war. Three years ago, Ashnard attempted to ignite a continent-wide war to create an overflow of chaos great enough to free the dark god imprisoned in the medallion. The Alliance rapidly advances through Begnion until Skrimir, the hot-headed successor to the Gallian throne, challenges and loses to Begnion's most powerful general, General Zelgius. As the Alliance retreats back to Gallia, King Pelleas sends the Daein army into the war on Begnion's side.

Meanwhile, Valtome, a narcissistic member of the Begnion Senate, takes control of the Begnion Central Army, and demands safe passage to Gallia through Crimea. Although Crimea and Gallia have an alliance, Elincia wishes to remain neutral, and regretfully allows Valtome's passage. The Laguz Alliance encounters the passing army and prepares for battle; however, Elincia rushes into the battlefield, lays down her weapon to show Crimea is neutral, and demands that fighting be taken outside the borders. Valtome calls her a traitor and commands his army to kill her, but she is rescued by the Greil Mercenaries and the Crimean Army. Afterwards, Valtome attempts to execute Zelgius for not aiding in the previous battle. However, the Apostle Sanaki, Empress of Begnion, stops the execution. The senate had imprisoned her and Prime Minister Sephiran in an attempt to usurp the throne. Ike is once again put in charge of the army still loyal to the Apostle, much to his disliking.

In Daein, Micaiah and party learn why Pelleas ordered them to aid Begnion. Izuka, who was secretly aligned with the Begnion Senate, had tricked Pelleas into signing a Blood Pact with Vice-Minister Lekain, which Pelleas mistook as a treaty. If Pelleas opposes the senate, the pact will activate a curse, killing citizens of Daein each day. Micaiah's army returns to the battlefield to prevent the senate from invoking the pact, while Ike's army marches through Daein to reach Begnion. Pelleas discovers that the only way to destroy the pact is to murder the pact-maker, and asks Micaiah to kill him. In the second playthrough, the player can spare Pelleas; otherwise, he is killed. Queen Almedha then reveals that Pelleas is still bound to the pact, but the curse can be lifted by destroying the pact itself, which is in Lekain's possession.

During a battle, Ike's sister Mist receives telepathic messages to use the Galdr of Release to awaken the dark god within the medallion. When Sanaki sings the galdr, nothing happens, but when Micaiah sings, she releases Yune, the dark god. Yune possesses Micaiah's body and tells the party the truth about her and Ashera. The term dark god is a misnomer. Yune is a goddess of freedom and chaos, and Ashera is her counterpart, order and restriction. Yune was sealed away because Ashera thought of her as an imperfection. Because they are linked, if Yune is awake, Ashera also awakens. If they were awakened by the galdr, Yune and Ashera would meet to judge the world and decide its fate; if they were awakened by the spirit of chaos, the world would be destroyed. However, Ashera has already given her judgment and petrified everyone on Tellius, though everyone with a strong spirit was kept safe. This revelation sparks the fourth and final part of the game.

With all sides on equal terms, Yune organizes three armies to travel to the Tower of Guidance, where Ashera has slumbered these past years. Lekain has survived the petrification and restored many of the petrified soldiers to their normal states, forming them into the Disciples of Order to fight against Yune's forces. Sanaki confronts Lekain, who reveals that she did not inherit the ability to hear the voice of the goddess, a trait only given to the first-born children of the first apostle's lineage.

The armies reach the tower and begin the ascent. They first kill Lekain and tear up the blood pact. In the second battle, Ike faces the Black Knight, who is revealed to be Zelgius, and kills him.
Next, they confront the Dragon King Deghinsea, who has decided to accept the goddess's judgment, and defeat him after Yune grants her blessing to the party. Outside Ashera's chamber, they meet Sephiran, who reveals that he caused all of the recent wars. Sephiran is revealed to be Lehran, who aided Ashera and the Three Heroes: Soan of the Beast Tribe, Deghinsea of the Dragon Tribe and Altina of the Beorc, in sealing Yune. They made a covenant promising Ashera that no war would be waged for 1000 years, and she would reunite with Yune to become Ashunera, the Goddess of Dawn. Due to the Serenes Massacre, Sephiran decided men could never live peacefully and wanted Ashera to destroy them all. In the first playthrough, Sephiran is defeated and willingly dies in Sanaki's arms, but in the second playthrough, he can be allowed to live and will join Yune's side. After Sephiran's defeat, the party enters Ashera's chambers. Micaiah gives Ike the remainder of Yune's power for one last strike (for only Ike can beat her). After Ashera is defeated, Yune saves all the petrified people and leaves as well.

The game ends as everyone leaves to continue their lives, which is told through a lengthy epilogue. Micaiah becomes the Queen of Daein. If Pelleas is still alive, he reveals he is not Almedha's son and stays with Micaiah as a member of the royal court. If certain conditions are met, it is revealed that Soren is Almedha's son. Sanaki realizes Micaiah is her older sister, and they agree to make peace between their countries. Ike leaves the continent forever to explore a distant land, either by himself or with Soren or Ranulf depending on his in-game supports.

Long ago, the continent of Archanea was invaded by the Dolhr Empire, led by the Shadow Dragon, Medeus, and the people lived in fear and despair. However... a miracle occurred. Anri, a youth from Altea, killed the Shadow Dragon using the divine Falchion sword. The Kingdom of Archanea was restored and the world entered an age of peace. But 100 years later... Medeus was resurrected. He joined forces with "Dark Pontifex" Gharnef, who shared his ambitions of ruling the world, and launched an attack on Archanea. Archanea was defeated by Grust's General Camus, and, aside from Princess Nyna, the royal family was wiped out. Cornelius, the king of Altea and successor of the heroic Anri, left to battle Medeus, with the Falchion in hand. Meanwhile, Cornelius's only son and the prince of Altea, Marth, awaits his father's return as he passes his days with his combat training. He was attacked by the forces of Gra but fled to Talys. Years later, he set out to reclaim Altea.

The story begins as Chrom and the Avatar engage in a battle against Validar. After a great battle, Validar is defeated, only to get up and fire one last spell at them, but the Avatar pushes Chrom out of the way and is struck instead. As Chrom helps the Avatar up, who is seemingly unharmed, they watch as Validar vanishes, with Chrom happy to see that their battle was over. However, the Avatar begins to act strangely as their eyes begin to glow red. Chrom tries to tell the Avatar to get a hold of themselves, only to suddenly be stabbed by a spear of electricity from the Avatar. As Chrom stumbles back and falls from his wounds, he pleads the Avatar to escape and assures them that it wasn’t their fault. A cold laughter fills the air, and the scene ends.
Awoken by a voice, the Avatar is greeted by Chrom and his younger sister Lissa. Despite losing all memory, the Avatar is able to remember Chrom's name as well as their own, despite this being their first interaction. Chrom and Lissa's retainer, Frederick, expresses some doubt in the Avatar's mysterious origins, before Southtown is suddenly attacked by bandits. Chrom, Lissa, and Frederick head to the town to quell the attack. The Avatar follows and reveals their tactical knowledge and helps to guide them through the battle. At the end of the battle, Frederick continues to cast suspicion in the Avatar, though Chrom feels a great amount of trust in them and asks that they join his Shepherds, a volunteer force of Ylissean soldiers that defend Ylisse from their warring neighboring nation, Plegia.

That night, the group is attacked by a series of corpse soldiers, but is ultimately rescued by a mysterious masked man going by the name of the Hero-King Marth. After being thanked for his help, Marth leaves, warning them that the battle was only a prelude of a greater danger to come.

The next day, the group reaches Ylisstol, where the Avatar meets with Emmeryn, the Exalt of Ylisse and sister of Chrom and Lissa, in turn revealing that the two are royalty. They are also formally introduced to most of the other Shepherds at their private barracks. Emmeryn has been informed of the new threat that Chrom, Lissa, and the Avatar faced, now dubbed the Risen. However, to make matters worse, Plegia's continuous attacks spur her to seek help from their neighboring country to the north, Ferox. Chrom volunteers to take the Shepherds to Ferox to seek assistance. Despite some initial doubts of Chrom's forces, due to numerous attacks by Plegian bandits claiming to be Chrom, Ferox ultimately allows them audience and the Shepherds meet the East-Khan, Flavia, who regretfully cannot help Chrom as she is not the ruling khan. Fortunately, the tournament to decide the ruling khan is nigh, and Flavia tasks Chrom in representing her to defeat the West Khan, Basilio, and his own selected champion. At the tournament, Chrom's rival is none other than "Marth", whom he manages to defeat after a tough fight. With Flavia now ruling the country, she gives Ylisse the full support of the Ferox in defending them from Plegia.

After returning to Ylisstol, they learned that Maribelle has been kidnapped by Plegian soldiers and taken across the border, where the Mad-King Gangrel, ruler of Plegia, claims that Maribelle was invading his country. Emmeryn attempts to parley with Gangrel and his advisor, Aversa, but refuses Gangrel's demands to be given the Fire Emblem in exchange. Despite a successful rescue of Maribelle, Gangrel uses the incident to formally declare war against Ylisse, prompting Emmeryn to take precautionary action. Later that night, Marth appears in the Ylissean Castle to warn Chrom of an assassination attempt against Emmeryn set to take place that night, claiming to have seen the future. He strikes down an ambush attempt against Chrom, using it as a example of his intentions. Suddenly, another hidden assassin appears and Marth narrowly avoids the strike. Though Chrom strikes the assassin down, Marth's mask is destroyed is revealed that "Marth" is a woman. However, Chrom is not given much time to process this revelation as a rumble comes from the castle as a small Plegian force, led by Validar, has put the assassination plot against Emmeryn into action. During the battle, Validar notices the Avatar, but is ultimately struck down and killed by Chrom's forces. In a dark abyss, Validar's soul is approached by a dark figure calling themselves "Grima". Though close to death, Validar still clings to life and is revived by Grima for a greater purpose.

The assassination attempt raises concern for Emmeryn's safety, prompting Chrom, Frederick, and Phila to recommend that she be moved from the capital for her own well-being. While she reluctantly agrees, Emmeryn and the Shepherds have barely left the capital when news arrives from Cordelia that Ylisstol has been attacked by Plegia. Realizing the direness of the situation, Emmeryn entrusts Chrom with the Fire Emblem before heading back to Ylisstol for one last attempt at parleying with Gangrel. The Shepherds are forced to retreat to Regna Ferox where news comes in that Ylisstol has fallen. To make matters worse, it is also reported that Gangrel has captured Emmeryn and plans on executing her publicly in a few days in Plegia.

With no time to spare, Chrom's forces quickly head over to Plegia and eventually make it to Plegia Castle. Gangrel offers one last ultimatum to relinquish the Fire Emblem or watch Emmeryn die. Chrom refuses both and nearly succeeds in rescuing Emmeryn. However, their rescue effort led by Phila is struck down immediately when Aversa summons Risen archers who slay the Pegasus Knights. Seeing that the Fire Emblem is too precious to give to Gangrel, Emmeryn willingly flings herself from the cliff over the castle. Emmeryn's sacrifice causes great despair amongst the Shepherds, who are forced to retreat. Behind the scenes, "Marth" laments that despite her efforts, history is still proceeding in similar fashion.

Despite the crushing defeat and their failure to save Emmeryn, Chrom and the others resolve themselves to fight on, despite their loss. However, Emmeryn's sacrifice begins to have an effect on the Plegians, causing mass desertions of the Plegian soldiers who have lost the will to fight Ylisse after hearing Emmeryn's words. With the Plegian army severely weakened, Chrom fights Gangrel one last time at Border Wastes. Through the Avatar's tactics and the support of the Shepherds, Chrom ends the Mad-King's tyranny by supposedly killing him in battle.

The Ylisse-Plegian war ends with the remaining Plegian forces surrendering. With the death of Emmeryn, Chrom ascends the throne and becomes the new Exalt. During this period, Chrom is formally married (either to the female Avatar, Sully, Sumia, Maribelle, Olivia, or an unnamed village maiden). He also becomes the father of a newborn daughter, Lucina, who bears the Brand of the Exalt in her left eye.

Two years after the Ylisse-Plegia War, during an expedition to Ferox, Chrom learns from Virion, a man that he had encountered the first time Risen appeared and has since joined the Shepherds, that he is the duke of a country called Rosanne in the continent of Valm. He and his retainer Cherche inform Chrom that the country of Valm, sharing the same name as the continent, had been led by Walhart the Conqueror, who unified the entire land. Now that Valm was under his rule, Walhart set his sights on Ylisse as well, and soon his soldiers will have reached a port in the western region.

This becomes so, and Valm demands nothing but unconditional surrender from Ylisse, and makes an example of anyone who would say otherwise, killing an innocent townsperson that tried to reason with them. The Shepherds fought and defeated them, but they had been nothing but the vanguard, and many more would soon arrive.

Forced into another war against a powerful empire, Basilio suggests that they receive aid from Plegia, who have warships and gold to utilize that would allow Chrom and the others to battle Valm in the sea and reach their lands to try and stop them. Despite not liking it, Chrom decides to try and negotiate with the new king of Plegia, who happens to be none other than Validar, who by all means should have been killed in the failed attempt to assassinate Emmeryn during the last war. Surprisingly, Validar is more than generous with Chrom, as he provides 800 warships and 200 transports, and was willing to fully fund the campaign against Valm, but would not be able to provide soldiers due to the last war. Regardless, Chrom received more than adequate help, and accepted. Validar then introduces the hierophant of Plegia, a person who is revealed to be the spitting image of the Avatar, and even has the same name as them. Despite this, Chrom is unable to get any answers, due to time being of the essence.

Later on, during the night when they were on Carrion Isle, the Avatar has trouble sleeping and then soon encounters Validar, who projected himself into the Avatar’s mind, and made a shocking revelation: the Avatar was Validar’s child. Validar tried to convince Avatar to leave the others that serve Naga and return to him, but their conversation couldn’t continue as Chrom arrived, forcing Validar to leave the Avatar’s mind. the Avatar speaks to Chrom and is terrified at the idea that they might be Validar’s child, and they are suspicious that the hierophant might be the Avatar’s twin. However, they are then ambushed by Risen, whom they suspect was sent by Validar. After making it through the ambush, Chrom is nearly killed by a sudden Risen that appeared out of nowhere, only for “Marth†to arrive, calling Chrom “fatherâ€, before stopping the surprise attack, forcing the Risen to escape.

Confused by “Marth†calling Chrom “fatherâ€, Chrom wishes for answers, and “Marth†shows him the answer by making him see into her eyes, where her left eye has the Brand of the Exalt, identical to his newborn daughter’s. Chrom finally realizes that “Marth†is in fact an older Lucina, which makes even more sense when she carries the identical Falchion. Lucina reveals that she is from the future, more than 10 years later, where the Fell Dragon Grima had been resurrected and had laid waste to the world. Lucina had in fact journeyed to the past, along with companions who are the children of other members of the Shepherds, to try and stop the return of Grima from happening.

As Lucina joins their group, they make their voyage to Valm and try to learn more about the future from Lucina. Lucina explained that she believed that stopping Emmeryn’s assassination was enough to avert the crisis, but explains that time simply found a way to make her death still happen. She also explains that while she never witnessed Chrom’s death, she learned from rumors that Chrom was in fact betrayed by his closest friend. This caused the Avatar to experience a mild headache, before Lucina continued on why she chose the name “Marthâ€, the reason being that she desired to hold a piece of the strength that the Hero-King once had, but was now resolved to return to her original name, the name given to her by her parents.

They are then informed that a Valmese fleet is approaching them, with equal amount of ships, but vastly superior number of soldiers. However, thanks to the Avatar’s quick thinking, they managed to decimate the fleet without suffering casualties, save for losing half their own ships.

After reaching Valm, they run into Say'ri, a swordswoman that was being chased by Valm soldiers. After saving Say’ri, they learn that she had been trying to form a Resistance that would help defeat the Valmese Empire, but she cannot unify them because of how the dynasts are overseeing their own agendas. Not only that, but the Valmese Empire commands over a million men, much to everyone's shock. However, Say'ri states that the achievements from Chrom and the Shepherds with decimating the Valmese fleet spread great inspiration among the masses. Furthermore, Say’ri also had an idea, which involved saving Tiki, who is worshipped as the Divine Dragon Naga’s oracle, and saving her from Valm’s clutches would unite the Resistance around her.

Entering the Mila Tree, they manage to save Tiki, who awakens from her slumber, and mistook Lucina for Marth, due to their similar appearances and outfit. She then informs them that Grima’s life force was growing stronger, and others were attempting to resurrect him, and thus Chrom must perform the Awakening, and to do that, Chrom must place the fIve Gemstones: Argent, Azure, Gules, Vert, and Sable, which were scattered during the Schism 1000 years prior, with Chrom being in possession of Argent, while Tiki held Azure. To obtain Vert, though, they have to defeat Walhart, as Vert was in Chon'sin, Say’ri’s home that Walhart conquered.
With their mission in mind, they focus on trying to defeat Walhart’s forces. They decide to try and seize Fort Steiger with a small, elite squad, while the majority of the army is sent to the northern and southern areas to distract Walhart and Say’ri’s brother Yen'fay, who had sided with Walhart despite Walhart’s actions.

Chrom and his allies infiltrate the fort, but much to their shock, their Resistance allies had ended up siding with Walhart, as Excellus, Walhart’s tactician, had used underhanded tactics such as threatening them or their families, scaring them enough into turning on them. Despite still taking Steiger, Chrom’s army was in danger of being flanked from both sides, as the rest of their forces were decimated by Walhart and Yen'fay, and most of the survivors had joined the enemy's ranks. This leads the Avatar to suggest that they retreat immediately, as the turncloaks that surrounded them betrayed out of fear for the empire and would not put too strong of an effort to stop them. Meanwhile, they would need to take out either Yen’fay or Walhart, but for it to succeed, they need to attack both, where one leader would take a small force to face against Walhart’s forces to buy time while Chrom would try and attack Yen’fay. Basilio volunteers for the mission to lead the small group to face Walhart, but Lucina tries to stop him, as she explains that in the future, Basilio dies in the fight against Walhart, slain by the Conqueror himself. Despite her protests, Basilio still goes, with Flavia by his side.

In the battle against Walhart’s forces, Basilio faces Walhart, and with two strikes, Basilio was nearly downed, barely able to hang on, earning Walhart’s praise for surviving more than a single strike. As Walhart moves to attack again, Flavia jumps in and helps block an attack, giving Basilio a chance to deliver a powerful strike, only for Walhart to strike back with even greater force, defeating Basilio. Defeated and in near death, Basilio quickly gives Flavia the Gules Gemstone and tells her to escape with it and give it to Chrom. Despite not wanting to leave him, Basilio manages to get Flavia to obey and flee the battle.

Meanwhile, the Avatar devises a strategy to face Yen’fay while preventing the Resistance from attacking them as well, by going on the active volcano in Demon's Ingle. There, they make their stand against Yen’fay, where he is defeated and killed. However, Excellus reveals himself and states that Yen’fay had in fact sided with the Empire for the sole purpose of protecting Say’ri, whom Excellus could have killed at any given notice but didn't because of Yen'fey's allegiance, a fact that devastates Say’ri. Though she seemed to have lost hope, the Avatar convinces her that the fight was not yet over.

Taking a moment to rest, they learn that Basilio had been killed, just as Lucina had stated he would. Flavia explained what happened and also gave Chrom the Gules Gemstone, thus making Chrom have three out of five. They then make their way to face Walhart in the capital.

Despite Excellus confidence that the Resistance would take care of Chrom and the others for them, the opposite happens. After Walhart is forced to retreat into his palace, the southern dynasts rally under Chrom, as they had learned that Yen’fay had perished, his death acting in a manner similar to Emmeryn’s sacrifice, as it was Yen’fay they had truly feared, not Excellus.

Walhart makes his final stand in his palace as he faces against Chrom and the Resistance. Despite Chrom trying to convince Walhart that there were other ways besides force, Walhart would not be deterred, thus forcing Chrom to battle and defeat him. With Walhart’s defeat, Say’ri is able to retrieve the Vert Gemstone and present it to Chrom, thus having gathered four Gemstones, with only Sable being the remaining one, which was held in Plegia.

After returning to Ylisse, Chrom is later given a message by Validar that they would give Chrom the Sable Gemstone if Chrom were to visit them. However, Chrom doesn’t believe that Validar is telling the truth, but opts to keep the Fire Emblem with him as it would be safer with him than anywhere else. As they enter the Plegian Castle, the Avatar notices that Validar has prepared an ambush against them, revealing the monarch's intentions. Validar at first tries to speak formally, but when Chrom rushes him and Lucina speaks, Validar reveals his true colors and demands that Chrom hand him the Fire Emblem. The Avatar manages to help them escape, having an escape route prepared earlier, but as they neared the exits, Validar intercepts them and injures Chrom. Validar then somehow takes control of the Avatar and forces him to take the Fire Emblem from Chrom, despite the Avatar’s attempts to resist. With the Fire Emblem in his hands, Validar places the Sable Gemstone in the Emblem and thus completes it, before making his way to the Dragon’s Table.

Ashamed and horrified by their actions, the Avatar is unable to trust themselves, though Chrom tries to assure them that the Avatar can resist Validar’s attempts to control them, but the Avatar was unsure, as Lucina watches silently. Later on, Lucina speaks to the Avatar alone and talks of her past with Chrom and how she would do anything to keep him safe, which the Avatar agrees to, but much to their horror, Lucina points her Falchion at the Avatar, and declares that the Avatar had to die, as it was them that had killed Chrom in the future.

Lucina admits that while she was wary of the Avatar in the beginning, she realized that the Avatar would truly never mean to harm Chrom due to the powerful bond the two shared, but seeing how Validar was able to take control of the Avatar made it clear that it was Validar that forced the Avatar to kill Chrom. Thus, to protect their future and ensure that the tragedy of her future was averted, she had to kill the Avatar, where the Avatar can choose to accept or reject Lucina’s judgment. If the female Avatar is Lucina’s mother or the male Avatar is Lucina’s husband, regardless of the decision, Lucina is unable to go through with killing them, as she loves them too much. If the Avatar is neither of those, then Chrom will stop her from killing the Avatar or stopping the two from going into a death battle, having been listening in on their conversation. Chrom assures Lucina that the bond he shared with the Avatar was unbreakable, as they were two halves of one whole, and they could overcome their destiny, to which Lucina chose to believe in those bonds, and asks the Avatar for forgiveness.

At the Dragon’s Table, they see many people who appear to be in a trance, before the group confronts Validar and Aversa. The two explain that everything that Chrom and the others did were always destined to occur: from defeating Gangrel to defeating Walhart. Even stopping the assassination of Emmerym was nothing but delaying the inevitable. Not only that, but Walhart was also aware of Grima’s return and intended to stop it, so Validar and Aversa schemed from both sides by allying Plegia with Ylisse to defeat him, and baited Excellus to destroy the Valmese Empire from the inside should Ylisse fail. Aversa then summoned the Deadlords to delay Chrom as Validar prepares.

Having broken through Aversa’s forces, Chrom and the Avatar confront Validar, where Validar reveals exactly what the Avatar was: the Avatar was born from Validar and was the only one to have had pure enough Fell Blood to possess the Heart of Grima, where the Avatar would serve as Grima’s vessel as some of the power of the Fell Dragon sleeps inside the Avatar. However, the Avatar was saved by their mother when they had been a newborn by taking them away one night, and Validar had been unsuccessful in finding the Avatar since, until now. Despite overcome with fear and doubt, Chrom’s words made the Avatar stand their ground and face Validar.

The battle played much like the dream that the Avatar experienced before they had been found by Chrom. After defeating Validar, everything played exactly as the dream did, with Chrom being struck down by a possessed Avatar. As Lucina despairs at how she failed to change anything, Basilio arrives all of a sudden, revealing to have been alive the entire time. Lucina’s warning had made Basilio choose to play dead after his defeat against Walhart, rather than stand and fight as his pride would have forced him to. While Validar didn’t seem to care as Basilio can be killed now, Basilio then reveals something else: Validar had been tricked. The Avatar had already foreseen those events in a dream, and when the Avatar saw Flavia give Chrom the Gules Gemstone, the Avatar understood that the Fire Emblem shouldn’t be completed against Validar.

Validar calls Basilio’s bluff, as he had been keeping tabs on Chrom and his army since Carrion Isle, but Basilio revealed that Validar’s spies could only keep track of the living people, not the dead, namely Basilio. Thus, the Fire Emblem in Validar’s hands was never complete, as one or more of the Gemstones had been switched with forgeries by Basilio, much to Validar’s fury. Validar tried to argue that destiny was still set in stone as Chrom was dead, but all of a sudden, Validar turned around and was struck by a spell from the Avatar, wounding Validar, while Chrom got up, revealing to have survived as the Avatar had managed to control themselves just long enough to weaken the power of the spell used to strike Chrom. Furious, Validar makes his final stand against the Shepherds, but was finally brought down for good.

However, the hierophant that was identical to the Avatar emerged, and revealed a shocking truth: they are the same Avatar, but from the future that Lucina came from, the one that had murdered Chrom due to possession by Grima. Grima explains that after learning that Lucina and her companions went back in time, Grima realized that if they stopped Grima from being resurrected in the past, they would cease to exist, so they went back in time as well. After Grima arrived back in time, they tried to pour their memories into their present self, but the Avatar’s Heart of Grima was too weak at the time to contain it, and thus resulted in the Avatar losing their memories. The headaches and voices that the Avatar had been hearing at times were Grima’s work as well. Grima then revealed that they had revived Validar back then after he had been defeated from his assassination attempt.

Though disappointed by the Avatar’s choice to not become the dragon's vessel, Grima decides to resurrect the Grima of the present by using the life force of the human sacrifices ready for him in the Dragon’s Table. As both Grimas appeared, and Lucina seemed to lose all hope, Chrom and the others realized that the only chance of defeating Grima was to perform the Awakening, but the Fire Emblem was lost when the Dragon’s Table fell. However, the Avatar arrives and reveals the Fire Emblem that they had stolen back, with the completed set of Gemstones that glowed with power when in Chrom’s hands.

With the completed Emblem, Chrom and his party makes their way to Mount Prism, where they would perform the Awakening. Though Grima sent some Risen forces to stop them, they were quickly dispatched, and Chrom entered the ruins where the Awakening ritual would be performed. There, Chrom initiates the ritual and as he is bathed in Naga’s holy flames, and Chrom’s convictions prove stronger than the fire he is engulfed in, thus completing the ritual. Naga then emerges, where she unlocks the full power of Falchion.

However, Naga reveals that even with it, they would not be able to kill Grima, as neither she nor Grima were gods, possessing neither the power of making nor unmaking, and that neither can destroy the other utterly. Instead, the Exalted Falchion would only put Grima to sleep for another 1000 years, should they strike Grima after weakening the Fell Dragon first. Chrom asks if there was a way to kill Grima for good, not wanting to put the burden of handling Grima to the future generations, but Naga explains that the only power that can perform that would be Grima’s own, which was clearly an impossibility.

Naga then explains that they must go to Origin Peak, where Grima was at. As the party makes their way there, Naga reminds them that she cannot kill Grima, to which the Avatar finishes that she can only seal him. Naga confirms this, and called the Avatar "Fellblood", due to the Avatar possessing power similar to Naga’s own, and knowing of the Avatar's origins. The Avatar then realized that if they and Grima were one and the same, then if the Avatar were to kill Grima, then it would be the same as being killed by Grima’s own hand.

Hearing that, Chrom realizes that they can end the battle at last, but Naga warns them that such a thing would have dire consequences: because Grima and the Avatar are linked to such a degree, killing Grima like that would most certainly kill the Avatar as well. Though she adds that the bonds that the Avatar forges can possibly return the Avatar to the mortal plane, the odds are so little that the Avatar was very likely to cease to exist.

Realizing the price to kill Grima, Chrom immediately rejected the idea, not wanting to sacrifice Avatar at all, and tries to get Avatar to promise him that they won’t sacrifice themselves, to which the Avatar can agree to or not.

They are then confronted by Aversa, who makes her last stand to delay them, and as revenge for killing Validar. As she faces them for the last time, she is soon defeated, and the the Fell Dragon emerges. Despite how it seemed impossible to even know where to strike Grima due to its monumental size, Naga explains that Chrom must strike at the nape of the neck, where Grima is weak at, but Grima will have forces ready to protect that area. Naga offers to send everyone onto the Fell Dragon’s back for their final battle.

After Naga teleports them onto Grima’s back, Grima instantly uses their power to critically wound everyone in an instant. Grima then speaks to the Avatar by creating a physical manifestation of the Avatar’s form. After mocking them, Grima then offers the Avatar a chance to spare them if the Avatar were to become one with the Fell Dragon. Regardless of the choice, Grima had no intention of sparing Chrom and the others, before Grima drags Avatar into a void, where the Avatar would be absorbed into the Fell Dragon. Despite trying to resist, the Avatar becomes slowly consumed by the darkness the Fell Dragon unleashed on them. Weakened, the Avatar begins to despair, but the sounds of Chrom and the army pierces the darkness, inspiring the Avatar to stand up once more and fight back. Free from the Fell Dragon's evil, the Avatar breaks free from the void and rejoins the army. Naga then uses her powers to restore everyone’s strengths, as they then faced Grima and the army of Risen that Grima unleashed.
Through a great and grueling battle, Grima is finally weakened, with Chrom preparing to finish Grima off. The Avatar is forced to make the ultimate decision of whether to allow Chrom put Grima to sleep, or to sacrifice themselves to forever kill Grima. The choice will trigger one of two endings:

The Avatar allows Chrom to finish Grima off, thus Grima returns to sleep for another 1000 years. However, the Avatar will regret the decision, despite being assured by Chrom (and the Avatar’s possible spouse and child). Chrom vows that they will continue to work together to preserve peace across the world and when Grima eventually returns in 1000 years, another army will be ready to seal him once more.

The Avatar decides to end Grima once and for all, and channels Grima’s power and creates a dark energy sphere. As Grima questions the Avatar's choice, they thank Grima for their connection as it gives them a means to end him permanently. The Avatar launches the spell at the manifestation of Grima, killing the dragon alongside the vessel. Back on Origin Peak, the Avatar begins to fade away. They thank Chrom and the others for the time they spent together before they finally vanish from existence. The army is left to mourn for the Avatar, but Chrom reminds them that their bond with the Avatar will bring them back. The army agrees and vows to return to their respective countries and rebuild while they await the Avatar's turn. Some time passes and Chrom and Lissa journey around the world, looking for the Avatar. Eventually they find the Avatar lying in a grass field, much like when they first met. This time, the mark on the Avatar's hand is gone and Chrom welcomes them back and tells them that their ordeal is all over.

The Avatar, child of Garon, King of Nohr, is a young member of the Nohrian Royal Family who had been living in isolation for years in Northern Fortress. The Avatar was frequently visited by their 4 siblings: Xander, the crown prince of Nohr; Camilla, the eldest princess; Leo, the youngest prince; and Elise, the youngest princess. After spending many years training to win Garon's approval to leave the fortress, King Garon allows them to leave the fortress and serve him, first by executing prisoners captured from the neighboring kingdom of Hoshido. When they refused to execute them, Garon tasks them to scout an abandoned outpost at the Bottomless Canyon, a vast canyon separating Nohr from Hoshido. At the canyon, the Avatar and their retainer Gunter are betrayed by Hans, a Nohrian ruffian, who attacks Gunter, sending him into the Bottomless Canyon. Enraged, the Avatar discovers their latent dragon traits, but before they can exact their vengeance, they are flung into the canyon by the Ganglari, a sword gifted to them by King Garon. Suddenly Lilith, another retainer, appears and rescues them, not only bringing them to the Astral Realm, but also revealing her true dragon form.

Upon returning back to the Bottomless Canyon, the Avatar is knocked out by Rinkah and returned to Castle Shirasagi by Kaze. There, the Avatar meets the Hoshidan Queen, Mikoto. Upon arrival, the Queen hugs the Avatar, revealing that they are her lost child, kidnapped by Nohr many years ago. The Avatar is stunned by the revelation and decides to wander around a bit to collect their thoughts. At a nearby lake, they meet a mysterious blue-haired singer named Azura, who reveals that she was a Nohrian princess who was kidnapped by Hoshido and raised as a princess. Over the course of a few days, the Avatar reunites with their other blood siblings including Ryoma, the crown prince of Hoshido, Hinoka, the eldest princess, Takumi the youngest prince, and Sakura, the youngest princess. Mikoto decides to announce the return of her child to the people of Hoshido at the Castle Town. There, a mysterious hooded figure takes the Ganglari from the Avatar and uses it to induce an explosion, destroying the town and claiming the lives of many Hoshido civilians, including Mikoto. Grief-stricken by the death of their mother, the Avatar's draconic heritage runs wild, causing them to degenerate into a mindless dragon. After driving away the hooded figure, Azura manages to quell the rage of the Avatar with a mysterious song. Now surrounded by the destruction that they had inadvertently caused, the statue in the middle of the town had been destroyed, revealing that a sword was hidden inside. The sword mysteriously levitates and flings itself at the Avatar, choosing them to be its wielder. Ryoma reveals that the Yato has chosen the Avatar to bear a great destiny to change the world.

With the death of the queen, the magical barrier she erected, protecting Hoshido from years of attacks from Nohr, has dissipated, allowing the Nohrian army to invade. With war now inevitable between the two kingdoms, Hoshido launches its army into battle. At the Plains of Hoshido, the two armies meet, lead by the two kingdom's respective royal families. Having spent years in Nohr as a child of the Royal Family, the Nohrian Royal Siblings beckon for the Avatar to return to them and fight for the glory of Nohr. Meanwhile, the Hoshido Royal Siblings beckon the Avatar to return to them to fight to protect Hoshido and stay with their newly reunited blood siblings. Standing at the crossroads of a major decision, which side with the Avatar choose? Will they return to Nohr, will they stay with Hoshido, or will they perhaps find another path?

The Avatar, unwilling to return to the heartless king who caused the deaths of countless innocent civilians, decides to stay with the Hoshido siblings and fights to protect Hoshido. Despite the Nohrian Royal Siblings' protests, they remain with Hoshido, eventually repelling them from the battlefield.

Birthright starts off with the Avatar going throughout Hoshido, protecting the citizens from the Nohrian army. During their travels, they receive news from Hinoka, eldest princess of Hoshido, that both Hoshidan princes Ryoma and Takumi have gone missing. After gathering more forces throughout Hoshido, they are eventually reunited with Takumi shortly before the Hoshidan army decides to take the fight to Nohr to end the war.

In Nohr, the Avatar seeks out the Rainbow Sage, a powerful sage who is said to grant power to those who brave his test. The Avatar becomes the fourth individual to ever succeed his trial and unlocks the ability to power up the Yato. However, since only Takumi is present in the army, the Avatar unlocks a part of its power thanks to the resonation between the blade and Takumi's Fujin Yumi. The Hoshidan army later teams up with a Nohrian resistance army bent on ending King Garon's tyrannical rule and reunites with Ryoma who had been assisting the resistance.

With the Hoshidan army in full force, they begin their assault on the Nohrian capital. However, along the way, the Avatar is faced with numerous tragedies including the deaths of Flora and Lilith. During their assault, they encounter Hans and Iago on the way and they manage to slay them both. During their final assault of Castle Krakenburg, the Avatar is forced to duel Xander alone. After a tumultuous battle, the Xander nearly executes the Avatar, however Elise, unwilling to see her two beloved siblings fight, intercepts the fatal strike and expires in Xander's arms. Despite the result, Xander continues to fight the Avatar, but merely allows the Avatar to defeat him. Fatally wounded and fully aware of King Garon's madness, he tasks the Avatar with defeating Garon before he dies.

At the climax of Birthright the Avatar confronts Garon in the Royal Chamber and manages to defeat him. However, Garon transforms in to a Blight Dragon, breaks the Yato and fatally wounds the Avatar. Left unconscious, the Avatar is visited by Flora, Lilith, Xander, and Elise who encourage the Avatar to return and continue to fight back. The Avatar is also encouraged by the voice of the Hoshidan Army, whose pleas spur them to stand back up. Now fully recovered, they reforge the Yato and unlocks its full potential thanks to its resonation with the Raijinto, creating the Blazing Yato. The Hoshidan army proceeds to fight Garon with Azura who uses her special song to weaken him. After a lengthy battle, the Avatar, Azura, and the Hoshidan army finally takes down Garon. Azura, who had overtaxed herself by singing her special song throughout Birthright, dissolves into water as she thanks the Avatar for ending the war.

With the death of the king, the war between Hoshido and Nohr ends. Now with both kingdoms at peace and without rulers, Ryoma takes it upon himself to take his rightful place as King of Hoshido. At his ascension, Camila and Leo also come to the ceremony. Camila announces that she has relinquished her title as rightful ruler of Nohr, making Leo the new King of Nohr. At the newly rebuilt Castle Town, a statue of Mikoto has been erected. The Hoshidan siblings vow to continue to restore peace to the world to the statue of their mother, with the Avatar continuing to help.

The Avatar, having unanswered questions, decides to side with Nohr in order to learn more about King Garon's intentions. Despite the Hoshidan Royal Family's plea for them to reconsider, the Avatar remains stalwart with their decision and the Nohrian Royal Siblings help to repel the Hoshidan royal family. Victorious of their first battle, the Nohrian royal family returns to Castle Krakenburg with the Avatar in tow, much to Garon's displeasure in their return.

Wanting to test their loyalty, Garon tasks the Avatar with quelling a rebellion at the Ice Tribe alone among other tasks, each one more grueling on the Avatar's faith and beliefs of not wanting to cause unnecessary bloodshed. Iago, King Garon's tactician, orchestrates much hardships for the Avatar throughout Conquest, but the Avatar pulls through each attempt. After rescuing the Rainbow Sage at Notre Sagesse, he unlocks the Yato's power, allowing it to resonate with Leo's Brynhildr, achieving the Grim Yato form, but not the full power of the blade yet. The Rainbow Sage proceeds to commit suicide to prevent his power from being further used.

Garon, pleased by the Avatar's supposed actions for the sake of Nohr, finally allows them to follow him closely, tasking them to fight for Nohr's conquest of Hoshido. At the Opera House a mysterious songstress causes great pain in King Garon through her dance, prompting the capture and slaughtering of all songstresses and dancers in Cyrkensia. The Avatar eventually follows Azura to a lake where they watch as she descends and disappears into the depths. The Avatar follows suit and winds up in a mysterious world and reunites with Gunter, who had miraculously survived his fall. There Azura helps them return back to their world. Azura shows the Avatar an orb, showing King Garon's true form, a horrendous water demon. Azura tells the Avatar that they need to make Garon sit on the throne in Castle Shirasagi, as the throne is said to reveal a person's true form.

The Avatar travels with the Nohrian Army, now in full force, as they proceed to conquer the Hoshidan territories. During their entrance to the Hoshidan capital, Iago orchestrates another attack on the Eternal Stairway, resulting in the death of Lilith who took a fatal blow from a Faceless ambush. The Avatar is forced to fight each of the Royal Siblings, though they do their best to spare their lives. Sakura is fought first, but the Avatar defeats her forces and takes her as a prisoner of war to protect her. They encounter Takumi next, who is defeated, but after the battle, even though he was not fatally wounded, flings himself off the fort. Finally, just outside of Castle Shirasagi, Hinoka makes a final stand, but she too is defeated. The Avatar decides to spare her and tells her to hide until the end of the war, but takes her bloodied naginata as "proof" of her execution.

The Nohrian Army finally arrives as Castle Shirasagi where they make the final assault to get Garon to the throne. There the Avatar presents Hinoka's naginata to Garon as proof of her demise. Iago voices his distrust, but Garon believes them and silences Iago. Inside, they encounter Ryoma, who acts as the final defense. Iago throws Hinoka's naginata and tells Ryoma that the Avatar killed her, which they begrudgingly are forced to lie that Hinoka was slain by them. Enraged by the Avatar's actions, Ryoma engages the Avatar in a one-on-one duel. Despite a grueling duel, the Avatar barely emerges victorious. As Ryoma lays defeated, the Avatar tells Ryoma that Hinoka is alive, much to Ryoma's relief. King Garon appears and orders the Avatar to execute Ryoma. Knowing that the Avatar's good will remains and that the Avatar will die if they do not execute him, Ryoma performs seppuku to spare them the agony. With the death of Ryoma, Garon heads to the Throne Room to finish his conquest, but forbids his children from entering.

Outside, Iago attempts to murder the Avatar for sparing Hinoka, but the Nohrian Royal Siblings intervene and decide to take down the traitorous Iago as well as Hans for staining the glory of Nohr with their underhanded schemes. They manage to kill Hans and the Nohrian Army and Leo executes the treachery sorcerer. With Iago's death, the Avatar reveals that Garon has been dead and the one they have been with is nothing more than a puppet to a greater force. Despite their disbelief in the Avatar's claim, they decide to enter the Throne chamber where they see Garon's true form. The siblings are saddened by this revelation and take up arms to finally put down their "father." The Avatar attempts to attack Garon, but the Yato is not strong enough. Suddenly, Xander's Siegfried resonates with the Yato, unlocking its final form, the Shadow Yato. With the power of the Shadow Yato and the army "Garon" is defeated for good. Suddenly, Takumi makes a sudden appearance, wreathed in a mysterious miasma. Using his bow, he shatters the Avatar's Yato and knocks them unconscious. In a dream, the Avatar encounters Lilith, Mikoto, and Ryoma, who encourages them to finish the fight. Takumi also appears, stating that the "Takumi" they were facing is no more than another puppet for the same mysterious force controlling Garon. Takumi tasks them with defeating the shell of his body and laments that they could have fought together in another path. Spurred further by the forces of the Nohrian army, the Avatar recovers and proceeds to fight alongside the army. Throughout the battle, Azura uses her song to weaken Takumi and thanks to her efforts alongside the Avatar and the Nohrian army, Takumi is finally put to rest. However, Azura mysteriously vanished after the battle, likely dissolving into water much like she did in Birthright.

After the war, peace has been restored to both Hoshido and Nohr. With both nations without their former rulers, Xander takes it upon himself to ascend the throne and take his place as the new King of Nohr. Hinoka and Sakura safely survived the war and were set free. With the death of Ryoma and Takumi, Hinoka becomes the new Queen of Hoshido and a new peace treaty has been established between the kingdoms. Though the Avatar is happy with their success in ending the war, much of their actions are still despised by the people of Hoshido and are still guilt-ridden by these actions. Nevertheless, the Avatar vows to continue to spread peace for the world, now with his Nohrian siblings by their side.

The Avatar, unable to bear the thought of fighting either of their families, decides to not ally with either. After taking down the lead commanders of the Nohrian and Hoshidan armies, both perceive this act as treason and the Avatar is forced to flee.

Azura brings them to the Bottomless Canyon where she makes them jump with her. They arrive in the kingdom of Valla, where Azura is finally able to reveal the secrets of the kingdom and its role behind the conflict between Hoshido and Nohr. With the identity of the true enemy known, Azura encourages the Avatar to get the armies of Nohr and Hoshido to cooperate in order to battle the Kingdom of Valla and its ruler, the dragon Anankos.

The Avatar travels through Hoshido and Nohr, gathering forces from both nations by gaining their trust. At Notre Sagesse, the Rainbow Sage unlocks the power of the Yato, transforming it into the Alpha Yato. Though not fully powered, the Avatar now has the means to stop Anankos. At the climax of the first half, both crown princess decide to join the Avatar's quest, having found the strength of their bond with them enough to trust them. At the Bottomless Canyon, the Avatar's army defeats Hans and Iago, who were sent by Garon to stop them and Ryoma and Xander form a truce between their nations in order to stop the Kingdom of Valla. As the two armies jump into the Canyon, the Avatar is ambushed by a mysterious assailant, but Scarlet takes the blow for the Avatar and dies.

During their travels through Valla, the army encounters a Vallite boy, Anthony, who supposedly managed to escape Anankos' control, however this turns out to be a ploy and he betrays the army. However, he is swiftly dispatched once he is transformed into a Faceless when his failures upset Anankos. As the army approaches the Vallite castle, unrest begins to form due to a string of attacks on the army, hinting that someone may be a spy. They later encounter a resurrected and controlled Arete, Azura's mother. After battling her several times, she is finally defeated and freed from Anankos' control.

Now in full assault of the Castle, the Avatar encounters Mikoto, who is revived as another one of Anankos' puppets. After defeating her, Mikoto reveals that the Avatar is actually a member of the Vallite royalty. After, they encounter King Sumeragi, who is revealed to be the hooded man at the beginning of the game. Sumeragi is eventually brought down and expresses his pride in his children, knowing that they have the strength to end Anankos. Sumeragi also reveals that the Avatar is not his child, and that they have no blood connection to the Hoshidan royal siblings. At the throne room, a trap is set that affects everyone but the Avatar and Azura. Gunter surmises that the Avatar and Azura are the traitors because of their ties to Valla, however Gunter accidentally mentions information about Scarlet that could not have been known to anyone but the Avatar and whoever attacked her. Gunter then reveals that he was the traitor all along and attacks the player's army. However, the Avatar defeats him and forgives him, allowing him to return to service in their army.

At the climax of the game, Anankos makes a full appearance and attacks the army. He summons King Garon, who offers himself to be the vessel for Anankos, but Anankos devours him instead, regaining the lost power he had gifted him. The Avatar's Yato resonates with all four of their brother's weapons, transforming it into the Omega Yato, granting the full power to finally end Anankos. After a long fought battle, Anankos is finally slain, restoring peace to the world. The portal to Valla from the Bottomless Canyon is sealed, but Valla is reformed with land granted from Hoshido and Nohr. For their role in the war as the leader of the army, Azura relinquishes her birthright as the crown princess of Valla to the Avatar, making them the new monarch of the restored Valla. Hoshido and Nohr formally form an alliance with each other and vow to preserve peace throughout the world.

In the Hidden Truths DLC, it is revealed that Anankos split his soul in two, and his gentle personality took on human form. His human form fell in love with Mikoto and they had a child—the Avatar. It is also revealed that Lilith is a fragment of the dragon Anankos's rage, and Anankos calls her his child making her the Avatar's sister.
