Lorenzo Fertitta, the CEO and person who historically should be remembered as perhaps the most important figure in making MMA into a worldwide sport left the office for the final time on 8/17.

The UFC staff was all told to come for a meeting, and as it turned out, the guest of honor was busy at first and they had to regroup and come back later. Fertitta, 48, took a $2 million investment in 2001 to a $4 billion sale 15 years later. Aside from making a killing in business, he saved a sport that was on its deathbed in the U.S. The sale was officially completed with the money changing hands this past week, a similar letter to the one above was sent to all company employees, and the new era of UFC began with UFC 202.

Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon was named by president-elect Donald Trump to his cabinet as the administrator of the Small Business Administration on 12/7.

“Linda has a tremendous background and is widely recognized as one of the country’s top female executives advising businesses around the globe,” Trump said. “She helped grow the WWE from a modest 13-person operation to a publicly traded global enterprise with more than 800 employees in offices worldwide. Linda is going to be a phenomenal leader and champion for small businesses and unleash America’s entrepreneurial spirit across the country.”

McMahon, 68, had donated $6.5 million to Rebuilding America Now, a super PAC that supported Trump’s presidential bid.

Most news stories listed McMahon as the co-founder of the WWE, although that wouldn’t be the case. Linda McMahon did work with Vince McMahon from 1982 on after he purchased the WWF from his father and his father’s business partners for $1 million for a company that probably grossed seven times that in a year. Their original company, Titan Sports, was founded by the two of them, but the promotion they purchased run by his father dates back to the 1950s, the Capital Wrestling Corporation out of Washington, DC. Prior to that, Vince McMahon Sr.’s father, Jess McMahon, promoted pro wrestling in the Northeast dating back to the 1920s.

Linda McMahon was CEO of the company until leaving in 2009 to prepare for two unsuccessful senate campaigns. At one point during Trump’s bid for the Republican nomination, she was highly critical of his comments regarding women.

“Those were just over the top,” she said. “They were deplorable, objectionable absolutely. He’s not helping, certainly, to put women in the best light. Maybe he regrets them. Maybe he doesn’t. I realize he punches hard when he punches back, but that’s just over the top.”

But as his momentum grew, she said that he wasn’t her first choice for the nomination, but said she was a strong supporter of his.

“Once you’re his friend, he is loyal to the end. He’s an incredibly loyal, loyal friend.”

Linda McMahon worked alongside Vince McMahon in building the company, which started expanding in 1983 and 1984. When she was running for senate, they pushed the narrative that she built the business, but the business was always built by Vince McMahon, who was always the person in charge of both the business and creative end and made every key decision. While she absolutely had input on the business side, and pushed the company into getting involved in image boosting programs, in many ways her business success was more the success of Vince McMahon, and her departure in 2009 made no significant difference when it came to company success.

The McMahons were the leading donator to the Trump Foundation, donating $5 million during the period Trump did angles for WWE including the headline angle at the 2007 WrestleMania, where Vince McMahon’s hair was up and got shaved, against Trump’s hair, in the Umaga vs. Bobby Lashley match that did a record 825,000 North American and 425,000 international buys.

Ironically, when McMahon made his national expansion in 1984, one of the key people backing him up and making the real business moves was his Director of Operations, Jim Barnett, the long-time promoter of various major pro wrestling companies. Barnett was the last person who went from pro wrestling to a national political appointment when he served on the National Council for the Arts under President Jimmy Carter. Barnett was promoting in Georgia at the time, as well as when Carter was Governor and later President.

Carter, who came from a family of wrestling fans, nominated Barnett for that position in 1980, just two years before Barnett was forced out as President of Georgia Championship Wrestling by Alan Rogowski (Ole Anderson). Barnett had hired Rogowski as booker years earlier. Rogowski had threatened to go public and to authorities on charges Barnett was embezzling from the company and as a deal to keep it quiet and not muddy his name publicly, Barnett agreed to resign from the company. At the time of his nomination, Barnett promoted not only Georgia Championship Wrestling, the most-watched pro wrestling group in the country because of its national exposure on cable, but also promoted the Atlanta Symphony, and also owned a percentage of Championship Wrestling from Florida and Southeastern Wrestling Corporation out of Knoxville, and when nominated for the spot, Vince McMahon’s father called Barnett “an outstanding promoter, probably the best in the country.”

Barnett, who at the time was also booking the NWA world champion and was also the treasurer of the NWA at the time Rogowski forced him out of the promotion, was out of wrestling until being hired by the McMahons. In 1983, he, Vince McMahon Sr., and Vince McMahon Jr. quit the NWA. Barnett was the Director of Operations for Titan Sports when it went national, a key player in a lot of business aspects including procuring television deals as the company expanded.

Linda McMahon had spent $100 million in two failed senate campaigns, but in doing so, gained political contacts in the Republican Party and since 2012 has worked behind-the-scenes in local party politics. Her name had been talked about for a cabinet position from shortly after Trump was elected.

Linda McMahon would become the second person from the pro wrestling industry currently serving a cabinet position in a major country. Former Olympic wrestler and pro wrestling star Hiroshi Hase, 55, is currently the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in the cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Japan.

The WWE’s next-to-last PPV show of the year, the TLC show from Dallas, featured two great matches and the rest kind of filler, built around yet another sensational performance by A.J. Styles.

Styles suffered an ankle injury in his TLC match WWE title defense, where he beat Dean Ambrose due to a heel turn by James Ellsworth. It’s unclear how long he’ll be out of action, but on television he portrayed it like it would be a week or so.

It appears that Styles will go back to working on top with John Cena over the WWE title, who returns on 12/26 for a house show in Madison Square Garden, and is expected to work regularly from that point on. The storyline will revert back to the idea that Cena is attempting to tie Ric Flair’s record of 16 championships. Ambrose appears to be moving to work with The Miz over the IC title.

There were two title changes on the show, as Bray Wyatt & Randy Orton beat Heath Slater & Rhyno for the tag team titles, and Alexa Bliss beat Becky Lynch for the women’s title. Slater & Rhyno are in the process of breaking up as a team, as Wyatt & Orton are going to work a program with Jason Jordan & Chad Gable over the belts. As noted before, the star power of Wyatt & Orton elevates the tag team titles greatly.

WWE’s final PPV show of the year will be Roadblock End of the Line, on 12/18 from Pittsburgh. The matches already official are Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns for the Universal title, Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte in a 30 minute Iron Man match, Seth Rollins vs. Chris Jericho and Big Cass vs. Rusev. There will likely be a tag team title match coming out of a three-way match with The New Day vs. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson vs. Sheamus & Cesaro that takes place on 12/12 at Raw in Philadelphia. The cruiserweight title looks to be Rich Swann vs. T.J. Perkins vs. Brian Kendrick in a three-way. Braun Strowman is expected to face either Big Show (they tested out bodyslam matches at house shows and just brought Show back to television this past week) or Sami Zayn. With the Universal title and women’s title matches being long, that’s enough to fill the card although they could always build another women’s match.

In pro wrestling this past year, one of the biggest stories behind-the-scenes has been what people have called the golden age of independent wrestling.

With the advent of Internet streaming, there are talented wrestlers who have been able to make a decent, and in some cases very good living being world travelers, most of which are affiliated with New Japan, ROH or Lucha Underground, and led to the advent of Flo Slam, which has made some deals paying significant rights fees for live content.

WWE is also aggressively making moves, whether it be signing talent that just a few years ago they’d have dismissed based on size and/or look, expanding content for the network and aggressively pursuing women wrestlers, with the idea of creating more and more content.

The WWE’s press conference on 12/15 to announce a two-night tournament next month to create a United Kingdom champion appears to be the first step in a goal of doing small-time independent style promotions in both Europe and Asia.

HHH won his 14th world championship at the Royal Rumble on 1/24 in Orlando. This is still planned as the means to the end game of setting up the big coronation of Roman Reigns as the company’s top star by winning the title at WrestleMania on 4/3 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

The long Reigns push, which was scheduled for him to beat Brock Lesnar for the title at WrestleMania in 2015, but stalled based on fan response, had gotten more successful of late with the return of Vince McMahon as a heel adversary.

World Wrestling Entertainment released its 2015 financials, ending the year with a record setting $658,7768,000 in revenue, and a far from record setting $24,144,000 in profits.

Those numbers compare favorably with $542,620,000 in revenue in 2014 and $30,072,000 in losses in 2014. The turnaround is largely because the network is in its second year and doesn’t have the first year start-up costs and the period of first building subscribers numbers. In addition, WWE’s television rights fees worldwide increased from $176,700,000 in 2014 to $231,100,000, of which $35,100,000 was in additional profit from the prior year.

The company’s business at this point is built around rights fees and network revenues. Rights fees, based on current contracts, will continue to increase over the next few years. They are a fixed total not dependent upon how creative or interest levels are doing currently. Obviously when current contracts are up, at that point interest levels and ratings will be key factors in new negotiations, as will the big picture state of the television industry.

Network revenues are also growing, although at a far slower pace than the company projected and Wall Street expected.

At press time, John Cena confirmed that he will be undergoing shoulder surgery on 1/7.

The injury is believed to be either a torn labrum or a torn rotator cuff. We’ve been told both from those within the company. This comes shortly after frequent training partner Cesaro had recent surgery for a torn rotator cuff. It continues the large number of shoulder injuries and surgeries in WWE over the past year.

No other details are available past that the normal recuperation period from that surgery is in excess of six months, so whatever plans there were regarding Cena, the Royal Rumble, and WrestleMania, are now out the window. When Seth Rollins went down with knee surgery, the WrestleMania plan was for Roman Reigns defending the WWE title against Cena. We do know that plan had changed and a new card had been made with different matches for both men, although because the company is so sensitive, nobody would confirm anything past that.

The 26th annual G-1 Climax tournament, which in the last few years, has gained more international interest as the period with a large percentage of what will be the year’s best matches, was officially announced this past week.

New Japan announced the format, identical to last year, with 19 shows over 28 days, split into A block and B block shows. A.J. Styles, who competed in the 2014 and 2015 tournaments, called it the most physically difficult and professionally rewarding thing he’d ever done. All 19 shows are scheduled to air live on New Japan World.

As of right now, the first show on 7/18, and the final three shows on 8/12, 8/13 and 8/14, will be broadcast in both English and Japanese with Kevin Kelly and Steve Corino as announcers.

Each wrestler will have nine singles matches, and on the days when their block doesn’t have singles matches, will be working tag team matches. While there will be some short matches and some matches that aren’t physically arduous, there are the exceptions to the rule, as, particularly on the big shows, expectations are high to produce PPV main event quality bouts.

The 2013 and 2014 tournaments were probably the best two pro wrestling tournaments in history. Last year couldn’t quite match up, but it may also have had the best finish, with the last three nights headlined by three of the year’s best matches, Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. A.J. Styles (a match both men now refer to as the greatest match of their respective careers), Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kazuchika Okada, and the two winners, Tanahashi vs. Nakamura, being as good as three straight night main events as you would ever see.

Living up to that standard will be difficult this year, with Styles and Nakamura out, and Tanahashi not nearly at 100 percent due to neck and shoulder problems.

The cast of characters is similar to last year. Newcomers this year are Kenny Omega, Tama Tonga (the only American in the tournament), Seiya Sanada, Evil, Yoshi-Hashi, and NOAH wrestlers Naomichi Marufuji and Katsuhiko Nakajima. While good, from a quality standpoint they can’t match the level of those who departed.

It’s notable that even though ROH is not running any shows during the tournament, nobody from ROH is in the tournament, not even heavyweight tag team champions Mark & Jay Briscoe. The junior heavyweights are usually not put in the tournament, although many expected Kushida, as champion, in and that didn’t happen.

The only non-regulars are Marufuji and Nakajima, as well as Toru Yano, who had been a regular until a few months ago. All three have been working with NOAH. While Marufuji is a name star, and Nakajima is likely to have excellent matches, it’s notable that they didn’t bring back Minoru Suzuki, who has had sensational matches in years past (most notably his 2014 match with Styles), nor Takashi Sugiura or Go Shiozaki, who are NOAH’s top singles guys of late. Shiozaki not being there makes sense, because NOAH wouldn’t want their champion to be losing singles matches.

The biggest week in UFC history with four live events, takes place with UFC 200, Brock Lesnar, five championship fights, the Hall of Fame and even a potential sale of the company all in the news.

Since the report by Jeremy Botter of Flo Wrestling of a sale on 6/20, to the WME/IMG/Wanda Capital group, all has been quiet on that front. This led to denials of such a sale, and even with it having all the ramifications of being the biggest news story this year, nobody else has been able to confirm the story. Over the weekend, sources with direct knowledge of the sale continued to deny the sale has been completed, or that it’s been decided who the future owners will be.

Dear Athletes

We are writing to personally advise you of a change to UFC. Renowned entertainment, sports and fashion giant WME-IMG has entered into an agreement to acquire UFC. Silver Lake Partners, KKR, MSD Capital LP and MSO Partners, LP will join WME-IMG as new strategic investors. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions.

From the moment Zuffa LLC purchased UFC over 15 years ago, you, the athletes, have always been the central focus of the promotion. That will not change. WME-IMG, who has been involved with UFC for many years, is focused on the continual global expansion of mixed martial arts and committed to further promoting you on the global stage.

Upon closing of the deal, Lorenzo Fertitta will be stepping down as Chairman and CEO of the organization, however Lorenzo and Frank will retain a minority ownership interest in the business. UFC President Dana White will continue in his role and will also retain a minority ownership interest.

The organization’s leadership, a team of great executives had-picked to help lead the business, will remain in place to carry on their work and continue to lead the team of dedicated employees who promote your careers as mixed martial arts athletes.

You remain a very important part of a highly driven, dedicated and motivated organization that will continue to deliver world-class experience and opportunities and opportunities for you as athletes and for the greatest fans in the world.

Thank you.

What in many ways was the biggest week in UFC history ended with almost nothing but questions about the future.

After months of denials by Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta of stories that the company was for sale, the company confirmed it was not just true but the sale was completed. The new owners are WME-IMG, the former William Morris Endeavor, at the same record-setting price tag of $4 billion that had been reported for months.

It was roughly double the largest sports franchise sale in history, that being the 2012 sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers for $2 billion. Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta purchased the company from Bob Meyrowitz and Semaphore Entertainment Group in 2001 for $2 million. They will garner in the neighborhood of $3 billion or more for their stock in the company. The exact figure is unknown since WME-IMG actually purchased less than 90 percent and both Fertitta Brothers will remain with a small amount of stock in the new company.

UFC is very much in a similar state as WWE will be going forward. It’s a healthy business that even in a year with bad luck, it will still be profitable. But to flourish, it’s about big stars. And right now, after UFC 200, everything is a big question mark.

A wellness policy violation by Roman Reigns (31-year-old Joe Anoa’i), who WWE has been pushing for years as the heir apparent to John Cena’s role as top star, has changed short-term plans for the company.
WWE has not officially released any information save that there was a violation, the first for Anoa’i, and that he is suspended for a 30 day period from 6/21 to 7/20. The WWE policy is that all violations are made public, but that the substance involved or nature of the violation is kept confidential.
We have no information regarding what the violation was, past the point that Anoa’i, writing as Reigns, said on Twitter, “I apologize to my family, friends and fans for my mistake in violating WWE’s wellness policy. No excuses. I own it.”

WWE is now claiming the start of a “new era,” based on the idea that Shane and Stephanie McMahon are going to be running Raw together, no doubt building to the inevitable battle for power. And at least at the start, it looks like HHH is sitting this one out.

In theory, WWE interest should start picking up over the next few weeks with the Money in the Bank PPV on 6/19 from the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, SummerSlam on 8/21 from the Barclays Center, and returns of injured stars John Cena, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt and Neville as well as Brock Lesnar and theoretically Paul Heyman for some Raw shows.

This should give the company its most depth, with those names combined with the influx of new stars that have come in this year and others who have been the focal points of television.

A lot of different avenues are opened up. Cena will obviously be a key babyface. The crowd will want Rollins as a babyface although for the balance of power, he may be put back as a heel. At some point the idea of The Shield reunion is a program that is guaranteed successful (and may help Reigns), but they just started The Family as a group so this may not be the time. It’s something you can always do and really the idea of them back together or sharing a main event against each other could be the something special needed for a WrestleMania. Wyatt had started a face turn with the Wyatt Family vs. League of Nations program, but that’s dead since they broke up the League, even though at this point Rusev is the only one who has a direction.

TNA's short-term issues as far as who will be in charge of the beleaguered franchise were settled on 10/31 when Nashville Chancery Court Judge Ellen Hobbs Lyle ruled against Billy Corgan's request to get an injunction against the company making any financial moves unless he was put in charge. Hobbs Lyle also threw out her temporary restraining order against the company, which would not allow them to sell any interest.

After a year with plenty of cute pro wrestling metaphors about the presidential election, Donald Trump, who among his many forays into the entertainment world included drawing the largest PPV number in pro wrestling history and being in the WWE Hall of Fame, is the new President of the United States. That’s a position often referred to as the most powerful leader in the free world.

This terribly divisive election leaves the country with a lot of challenges and uncertainties. It’s sad. A lot of Americans are unaware that for a number reasons, because of being world economic leaders, they are resented in many parts of the world. Unfortunately, this will, if anything, accentuate that feeling with the idea the country voted someone who has insulted minority groups as its president, with the idea that the American majority (even though the actual votes were almost identical and Clinton seems to have barely won the popular vote) had no empathy for its struggling minorities.

We had an election with two poor and flawed candidates who somehow ended up as the only choices, and a country that in many cases had people holding their nose no matter who they voted for in a manner that I’ve never seen in my life. We’ve all lived through close and deeply-contested elections that went down to the wire, but this was the worst of politics played out before everyone’s eyes and for the world to see.

In many ways, it spoke to the power of promos, and a backlash, or whitelash, as Van Jones called it on CNN, against politicians and to an extent, a news media that derived tremendous ratings from a campaign filled with bombshells from both sides in the last weeks trying to derail each candidate. We’ve had plenty of campaigns where one or both sides ran on campaigns of putting fear into the public. In the end, we go through cycles of good and bad economic times, but ultimately, life continues. In this case, there is tremendous uncertainty. As you get older, you realize the phoniness of politics. Like in any profession, it’s a game that experience helps you maneuver in, but that experience can take people who started out in it for the right reasons, and mold them into exactly what it is that people don’t trust.~~

Conor McGregor, in breaking more records and becoming the first person to hold championships in two different weight classes at the same time in UFC history, has become both the greatest asset and the biggest threat of any fighter in history to UFC management.

After drawing what is expected to be his fourth consecutive 1 million plus purchased pay-per-view, and being the headliner in a show that destroyed the company gate record, now has both management and three different weight classes somewhat on ice.

The improbable story of Bill Goldberg, weeks before his 50th birthday, coming back for what was supposed to be a one-time appearance to help promote the WWE’s video game, and emerging as the biggest star in pro wrestling just tells you that the axiom that it’s all about timing is true.

Goldberg defeated Brock Lesnar in 1:26 after agreeing to come back for at least a few more dates. Unlike with Sting, who lost to HHH in his first match back because of the idea that at his age, he was only going to do one match with the company, but that was kept hidden, in Goldberg’s case, he came out on interview No. 1 and said about Lesnar, that not only was he next, but he was last.

We noted at that time that making the decision that Goldberg was a one-and-done was a mistake, because what if he caught on.

The saga of TNA continued this past week with the big question left unanswered.

Exactly who funded the Bound for Glory PPV and tapings this week? TNA President Billy Corgan did media interviews during the week and couldn’t give a direct answer as to whether the tapings would take place, although pushed the idea that he expected they would. He said he was hoping to purchase the company, and without giving more details, said the process was complicated.

The funds to do the PPV live came in three days before the show, as that is when the people who needed the money up front for the satellite uplink to go live were contacted. PPV providers, knowing the issues, in some cases weren’t taking orders for the show until that point in time. But they were not sold the source of the funding. Talent was expecting to be addressed at Bound for Glory on 10/2, but that came and went without a word.

The Bill Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar match for the 11/20 Survivor Series in Toronto will be made official shortly as Goldberg will appear on WWE television for the first time in nearly 13 years on the 10/17 Raw in Denver. Lesnar will then appear on the 10/24 Raw in Minneapolis.

The deal was put together over the past few weeks and finalized just over one week ago.

Goldberg did not come across as strong as I had expected in his ESPN interview with Jonathan Coachman on 10/5, but on Raw on 10/10, they edited his appearance to focus on his comments regarding Lesnar.

The two-year odyssey, odd being the key part of the word, of C.M. Punk to the UFC octagon saw the door shut and the clock strike midnight, not Eastern time, but Cinderella time.

In the end it was simple reality. Starting out at 36 with very limited training past some Jiu Jitsu classes from Rener Gracie, no great athletic gifts and a body beaten up by 15 years of pro wrestling was not going to be able to train for two years and be able to compete in the UFC.
