Introduction
Hook: As Walter Kirn stated, “Everyone loves a witch hunt as long as it's someone else's witch being hunted.â€, sometimes it is remarkably simple to make accusations, but whether you have concrete evince to support it, that is the rigorous part.
Thesis: Fear and injustice have allowed innocent people to get persecuted during the Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthyism period, and the Haymarket Riot.
II. Salem Witch Trials
Salem Witch Trials demonstrated how fear, and developed paranoia caused by a group of girls resulted in the persecution of innocent citizens. Some of these people were later prosecuted, although reliable evidence was close to none.
It all started with a group of girls during the winter of 1691-92, these girls were met together to listen to Voodoo stories told by Tituba, this poor West Indian Slave. These practices were seen as forbidden by the Puritan society, and were punishable by death. (Shapiro)
These same group of girls were acting “weird†as their families described them, after they started convulsing, Dr. Griggs was requested, he came to the conclusion that the “evil hand†was upon the girls. (Shapiro)
The girls were questioned, “Who torments you? Who torments you? Finally they [girls] named three women-Tituba, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborne-all of them easily recognisable as Satan's handmaidens†(Shapiro)
B. One of the numerous citizens accused by the girls, was Martha Carrier. (Shapiro)
She was “ knownâ€to be a witch by many sources, even her own family, as her daughter expressed, “...she told the officials that her mother was a black cat.â€. (Shapiro)
Allen Toothaker, he stated that his cattle had died from “unusual causesâ€, after he argued with Martha Carrier. (Shapiro)
Phoebe Chandler, felt extreme pains, after she heard Carrier’s voice telling her she was getting poisoned. (Shapiro)
184. This minimal evidence still got Martha Carrier hung on August 19, 1692,
although she never confessed to witchery. (Shapiro)
III. McCarthyism
During Senator Joseph McCarthy’s period he gained popularity through his thoughts of Communist infiltration among the U.S. Federal Government forcing innocent officials to resign, or get fired.
The term “McCarthyism†came from an illustration of Senators McCarthy’s campaign to expose communism in U.S. government, by Herbert Block. (“McCarthyism.)
Joseph McCarthy
He was born on November 14, 1908 in Outagamie, Wisconsin.
He grew up in a 142-acre farm, and attended Marquette University of Milwaukee
From 1935-1941 he was a layer, and was elected as a Republican senator for Wisconsin in 1946
Although none of McCarthy’s actions led directly to the conviction of any government official. But rather his influence was what caused these officials to get demoted or even blacklisted. (“McCarthyism.)
Some of McCarthy’s victims of his influence were mainly China specialist in the State Department, who McCarthy associated with the “loss of China†in 1949. (“McCarthyism.)
Of the officials part of the “loss of China†were, John S. Service and John P. Davies who were both fired, and John C. Vincent and Oliver E. Clubb were both forced to retire. (“McCarthyism.)
B. McCarthy had a strong influence, he was quite efficient at manipulating others thoughts or ideas, to match with his own.
One of McCarthy’s biggest accusations was directed towards the Democrat Commander General Marshall, it was said that on June 14, he was going to criticize (“attackâ€) Marshall, but the Senate session was boycotted. In McCarthy's speech there was said to be almost 60,000 words, about his accusations towards Marshall of him being a traitor. (Cohen)
The country at that moment was putting attention on the President, as it had done on previous times of war, and candidate Truman’s popularity increased. This meant bad news for McCarthy, since he had accused Truman of going easy on Communism. (Cohen)
After commander MacArthur had been fired from the War of Korea 1951, for not following orders of President Truman. McCarthy did not agree with this decision to fire MacArthur, he stated that the President was under Communist influence, and he was drunk when he did it. (Cohen)
McCarthy believed that we should of not focused so hard on expending time and resources fighting wars outside the country when we had a big problem on our own federal system, as he expressed, “I am inclined to think that as the casualty list mount and attention on the people is focused on what has happened in the far East, they can’t help but realize there was something rotten in the State Department.†(Cohen)
IV. Haymarket Riot
The workers of Chicago were protesting peacefully at the Haymarket Square, until an attacked occurred, and innocent people were killed.
On May 4, 1886, after the earlier police attack, which left 6 people dead, workers met up at Haymarket Square in Chicago. The workers were protesting for the right of eight hour work days. (Green)
Approximately three thousand workers turned out for the Haymarket Protest. (Green)
After the mayor (Carter Harrison), and most workers left the square, police were sent in to dissipate the crowd of now 500 workers. (Green)
At around 10 o’clock after the last speaker was wrapping up, about 180 policemen arrived, and later a bomb was thrown into the crowd of protesters. (Skurzynski)
“The police responded with indiscriminate gunfire, killing both police officers and workers in the square.†(Green)
B. The origin of bomb was never identified, but the police “found†and persecuted several innocent suspects, a few of these men were prosecuted.
In the 1880’s, Anarchism, Communism, and Socialism were still developing. These three philosophies would often overlap and relate to each other. (Skurzynski)
Anarchism is about everything being separated as possible from government. (Skurzynski)
Communism calls for one community, property is owned as a whole. (Skurzynski)
Socialism is the belief that society should be organised for the benefit of the community as a whole, rather than benefiting a specific group. (Skurzynski)
472. At this time Socialism was the most popular among the working-class. (Skurzynski)
483. The suspects of the bombing were put on trial.
As stated, “After a blatantly biased trial seven out of the men were found guilty and sentenced to death.†(Green)
Out of the seven found guilty men, four of them on November 11, 1887 were hung, this date is remembered as Black Friday. (Green)
4. Even though the judges had no real evidence to prove the workers had committed said crime, they were still tried for murder. (Green)
525. After the riot, Chicago decided to ban public meeting and attacked labor directors, anarchist and socialist. Haymarket was called to be the cause why Knights of Labor was shut down.
V. Conclusion
Refreshed Thesis: Innocent people during the Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthyism period, and the Haymarket Riot were wrongly persecuted, with minimal evidence and
