2This morning I was told by Bullethead in no uncertain terms that my passion for this company has been noticed and that it is “off putting.” I was treated as though I was an irritating intern who would just leak songs and post a mix without permission, despite having worked in rights management for two years and video services for a year before that, and despite having 18 more months of experience doing top level Def Jam Universal marketing campaigns for Kanye West, Rihanna, Justin Bieber (thank god I didn’t clumsily leak What Do You Mean when I planned and executed this campaign for Scooter Braun projects, which they have reused in every major release since -

4 ) , Rick Ross, Alessia Cara, and more, having gotten us through the YouTube Pillars Copyright Strikes, and flagged multiple labels that delivered content from before my time that could have cost us millions in legal fees if I didn’t catch it first, which literally NO ONE (including Bullethead) caught before I did despite being in the system for nearly a decade. I was criticized for sending an “unintelligble” email, which for some reason Niya and everyone else on copy was capable of understanding perfectly. I was blatantly lied to and told Tim Pithouse had “no idea” what my email was about when he asked me for a DJ mix rate on three separate occasions during the artist services mixer, which I DJd free of charge, without thanks or basic acknowledgement from the executives outside of artist services. Not one person responded to that email, nor my email from the day earlier proposing a similar project (that contained no proposals for premieres or unreleased music) with a simple request to clarify what I meant. I was told we can’t focus on “club music” because we have to focus on “Latin music” when half of my proposed setlist is a neoperreo showcase for la vendicion, indicating to me me that my email wasn’t even actually read and I was simply flagged and selected for humiliation for daring to send emails outside of the chain of command. I was criticized for sending an email at 4am when I run a 24/7 support inbox in our highest growth department and have solved crises for our artists and labels in the middle of the night without ever once asking for overtime or to have a later start time or taking a hangover sick day, despite living with insomnia, depression, and IBS.

6Basically I am being criticized for sending emails by people who either did not read, did not understand, and did not want to understand what was said, and who don’t even send emails of their own in the first place. I am being criticized for wanting to do more than my job by people who can’t even ask me for clarity on why without masking it as some sort of concern for my “mental health.”

8I will not work for this company unless there are severe changes to my salary and responsibilities and I receive a sincere and thorough apology for these direct attacks on my judgment and my competence. I still don’t know if that will be enough. I have put in three years of constantly evangelizing this company and our culture and never once complained about my salary, barely above the department of labor minimum to not have to pay me overtime but framed as a “raise,” because I truly loved working here and thought it was a company that rewarded passion, ambition, creativity, and efforts to make the world of indie music a little less white straight and male. However, when a gay man proposes a project intended to highlight the wide world of independent club and experimental music made by non-white people, he’s told he’s off putting.

10Frankly, my DJ project is happening with or without The Orchard. I’m finalizing an in store with Kith already and am very well connected in music and politics and LGBT nightlife. Everything I have done this week has been out of excitement for a potential shared business venture that I believe would bring in a lot of money and differentiate us from the rest of the industry. To be met with not even the most basic level of curiosity or interest but “concern” that I seem too happy or energetic or that I sometimes email outside of the chain of command is ludicrous. For the response to my hurt and offense and literal tears and apologies to continue to be “concern” and treated as though I’m some hormonal teenager is insulting. It is clear that I am not respected or trusted, and I will not return what I do not receive.

25I truly cannot believe I have to tell this to you especially since it is illegal for you to be gossiping about it in the first place: I have been on Prozac since I was 14. I have not had a recreational drug relapse or stopped taking my prescribed medications since 2013 when I wasn’t even out of college (and who doesn’t have a mental health crisis or drug problem at northeastern university). i have a psychiatrist and a therapist who can and will both testify that the last time I even approached “crisis” was when my cat suddenly died in my arms over a year and a half ago, the first major death I’ve ever dealt with in my life - I am 27 years old - and I shared the pain of that loss with all of you openly!!! Before that, it was when an executive at Def Jam called me into his office to similarly publicly ambush and humiliate me for daring to want to work in operations instead of marketing and constantly running interference when he tried to harass women assistants half his age. This prompted me to quit and seek a job in operations at a company with better culture and respect for women which, again, you know because I have shared that pain with you openly and how traumatic that job was for me and repeatedly talked about why I think orchard’s culture is better.

27It is blatant that my mental health would not be called into question either at Def Jam or in this current situation if I played guitar and wore muted colors and promoted dusty music by old straight white people, or if I was a man who doesn’t sometimes cry and say “yay” and act flamboyantly, or even if I just wore explicit shirts that featured prominent metal acts instead of pop and dance artists. I have exhibited no behaviors that are not perfectly normal and professional for the worlds of pop music and nightlife, which I know because I have personally worked on more #1 records than this company has, point blank.

I received nothing but green lights on all my “extracurricular” project proposals from across the company until I was suddenly “off putting” and universally disliked (aka specifically disliked or selected for humiliation by Bullethead and Katie Weissman for apparently stepping on their toes in regards to A&R, office popularity, or culture club operations and brand management - I truly cannot begin to guess what led to their truly massive unforced lapse of judgment yesterday, which has irrevocably damaged my perception of both their judgment and the judgment of anyone who would hire them or call them a friend) - which coincidentally just happened to occur after committed the high crime of proposing my own imprint for experimental indie music centering LGBT people, a completely lukewarm business proposal that was specifically requested from me by your own artist services people.

31I have especially never been repeatedly questioned about my mental health and told my behavior is “concerning” and that I need referral to additional counseling resources by people who have already been told this information and by virtue of working in Human Resources and as a high level executive should know this behavior is libelous and illegal. My direct reports, both above and below, can testify that I’ve rarely (never?) even taken a mental health day despite having more than one day when I’ve struggled - I’ve always kept my emotions in check and pulled through for the good of our team and so John and Steven and my interns to feel like they are valued and appreciated - and that my coworkers who don’t report to me are too. The fact that we are going on hour of 24 with absolutely no acknowledgement, or even an attempt from any of my “team members” to check on my supposed “mental health crisis” that you’re so concerned about you feel the need to gossip and establish security protocols is insanity.

33Any prior and ongoing speculation on my mental health, written or verbal, or warnings to our security team that I am a “threat” or “crazy,” whether or not it is in the guise of “concern,” will be documented as ongoing harassment against my disability status, my sexual orientation, and blatant retaliation for hiring and centering non-straight-white-male people (even though John is literally right there and my department is still lily white). I implore you to send over any written record of discussion of my mental health, no matter how well intentioned, before we have to go into discovery. Any attempts to give me counseling or legal recommendations, or to talk to me in any way, that I or my lawyers do not explicitly initiate and ask for myself by name are not wanted and not welcome on any platform or via any method.
