101 EXT. BATTLEFIELD - DAY 1 No Man’s land. Mud, craters, barbed wire, drifting hellish
11fog.
12The dull stomp and crump of distant explosions. The rattle of gunfire.
13Raising up now. The drone of engines. A flying formation, heading towards us. Now energy beams blasting down at the battlefield below -
14- it’s a strafing run!
15Now, as they zoom overhead, we see these are not X-wing fighters, they’re biplanes! Biplanes firing lasers!
16Now, below we see a troop of SOLDIERS - muddied uniforms, gas masks - scattering as the energy beams zap down among them.
17On one of the SOLDIERS (KANZO) as he does a commando roll, scrambles to his feet again, weapon levelled at the biplanes as they drone away -
18- and we see his weapon is a bow and arrow! He relaxes, doesn’t fire, no point.
19As he turns to rejoin the others - also scrambling to their feet - he sees something racing through the fog. Another SOLDIER joins him.
20 SOLDIER What’s wrong?
21KANZO Was that a child?
222 EXT. BATTLEFIELD - DAY 2 POV of someone running - desperate, panting, terrified. Now
23skidding, slipping in the mud, and filthy water!
24KANZO (Calling from off)
25Hey! You there, stop! Stop running!!
26On the runner, stumbling to a halt, turning.
27A ten year old BOY. Face spattered with mud, eyes terrified. He sees:
28Emerging from the fog, KANZO. His hands are raised, placatory, calming. He’s about twenty feet away from him.

37Just don’t run.
38The other SOLDIER’s voice, calling from the fog.
39SOLDIER
40Kanzo?
41KANZO I’ll catch up!
42SOLDIER
43There are clam drones two miles
44away -
45KANZO
46I know, I’ll be fine - just go.
472
48Reluctantly, the SOLDIER disappears into the fog. KANZO turns back to the BOY.
49KANZO (cont’d)
50What are you doing out here? Did
51you get lost? The BOY: fearful, nods -
52- and as he does so, the mud beneath them seems to ripple, move. Like there’s something underneath.
53KANZO (cont’d)
54Stay still, stay absolutely still!
55KANZO has pulled a little gadget from his jacket - like a fairly primitive meter.
56KANZO (cont’d)
57I’m just scanning the ground, I think we’ve got company. Do you
58know what hand mines are? The BOY nods.
59KANZO (cont’d)
60Well in that case you know you’ve
61got to stand absolutely still, right?
62KANZO (cont’d) Ever seen a hand mine?
63KANZO (cont’d) A beat - and the BOY just points -

72KANZO looks down. In horror.
73Reaching up from the mud, and almost the same colour as it, is what looks like a human hand. The fingers are wrapped around his boot.
74He takes a breath. Calms himself. Got to ride this out, play it calm -
75KANZO (cont’d)
76Okay. Everything’s going to be f-
77And whoosh! With shocking suddenness, KANZO is just sucked down into the mud, gone in a terrifying fraction of a moment. The mud slaps together over his head, and writhes briefly, like there’s a terrible struggle below.
78The BOY: staggers back a step in shock, breathing hard, horrified -
79- and that movement is enough!!
80All around, little patches of mud twitch and quiver -
81- and then, slowly rising up, fingers ...
82A little forest of muddied hands are slowly growing around him, fingers sluggishly flexing.
83On one of the hands, as it turns towards us -
84- in the centre of the palm, is a single, unblinking eye.
85All the hands, revolving now, like radar masts, as if trying to detect something. On each palm, that staring eye ...
86The little BOY - so still, so terrified.
87One of the hands, seems to fix its gaze on the BOY. The palm tilts back as if looking him up and down.
88Another hand stops to survey him, again as if locking on to a target.
89Another! Two more!!
90The BOY, terrified, calling now.
91BOY
92Help me! Please, help me! Help me!!
93As he looks round in despair, he sees something arcing through the air towards him, glittering and spinning.
94It slaps into the mud, right at his feet. He stares at it.

101- and now THE DOCTOR's voice. It sounds like he’s standing right next to us, but we can’t see him anywhere.
102THE DOCTOR (V.O.)
103Your chances of survival are about one in a thousand - so here’s what you do. Forget about the thousand. Concentrate on the one.
104The BOY, looking around. Who’s talking?
105THE DOCTOR (cont’d) Pick it up.
106The BOY, looking round - who spoke?
107THE DOCTOR (cont’d) I said, pick it up.
108Nervously, the BOY picks up the screwdriver.
109THE DOCTOR (cont’d) (V.O.)
110I’m straight ahead of you. About fifty feet. Can you see me?
111The BOY, squinting now.
112Through the fog, he can just make out the dim figure of THE DOCTOR, and the TARDIS a few feet behind him. The sky flares, explosions boom, machine guns chatter - but THE DOCTOR speaks quite calmly.
113THE DOCTOR (cont’d)
114The device in your hand is creating
115an acoustic corridor so we can talk. Do you understand?
116BOY ... who are you?
117THE DOCTOR
118Just a passer-by. I was looking for
119a bookshop. How do you think I’m doing?
120BOY
121This isn’t a bookshop.
122THE DOCTOR
123No, this is a war. A very old one,
124going by the mix of technology. Which war is it? I get them all muddled up.

136Me neither. I try never to

138BOY
139... what are you doing here?
140THE DOCTOR Saving your life.
141BOY
142Why?
143THE DOCTOR Because I like you.
144BOY You’ve never met me.
145THE DOCTOR
146Well how am I ever going to meet
147you if I don’t save your life?
148Despite himself, the BOY gives a tiny little laugh.
149THE DOCTOR (cont’d)
150Oh, a laugh, that’s good. Humour is
151the decadence of reason, so that means you’ve stopped panicking, and started thinking. Now you’ve got to make a choice.
152BOY A choice?
153THE DOCTOR
154You have to decide you’re going to

3976to die anyway. Indulge yourself, go on, kill the Dalek.
3977DALEK
3978Do not kill me! Do not kill me!
3979THE DOCTOR, insensibly, raising the gun, levelling it at the DALEK.
3980THE DOCTOR Is Clara dead?
3981Inside the DALEK:
3982CLARA
3983I’m Clara, I’m not dead, I’m
3984right here.
3985DALEK
3986I am a Dalek. I am alive.
3987Those words cause a savage look of anger to cross THE DOCTOR's face.
3988Inside the DALEK:
3989CLARA (cont'd) DALEK (cont'd)
3990I’m your friend. Your friend! I am your enemy. Your enemy. THE DOCTOR steps forward, jamming the exterminator against
3991the eyepiece.
3992CLARA (cont'd) No, please, not don’t.
3993... and THE DOCTOR pauses. What? Frowns. What??

4019A buzzing and clicking - like the DALEK is taking longer to translate into its own terms.
4020DALEK
4021I ... show ... mercy.
4022THE DOCTOR steps back, lowers his gun.
4023THE DOCTOR

4027CLARA DALEK How?
4028THE DOCTOR: there’s something very odd here, and he’s starting to suspect what it is.
4029THE DOCTOR
4030Just think the word “open”. It’ll
4031work.
4032The whine and hiss of machinery, and the DALEK is opening -
4033- to reveal CLARA trapped, terrified, inside it. Sobbing, tear-streaked.
4034He just stares. Oh dear God, what did he nearly do??
4035MISSY
4036Oh, look. There’s a surprise.
4037THE DOCTOR Missy - run.
4038CLARA
4039(Exhausted, so relieved)
4040Doctor ...
4041THE DOCTOR doesn’t even look MISSY. His voice low and deadly. And THE DOCTOR steps to the DALEK, starts tearing at the machinery, trying to rip CLARA free of it.
