513
Aang’s peace-making skills are put to the test when the kids meet two feuding tribes of refugees that must cross an enormous canyon on their way to the Earth Kingdom capital of Ba Sing Se. The orderly Gan Jins and the messy Zhangs hate each other because of an ancient feud involving a Sacred Orb. Adding to the problem is the fact that there is only one Earthbender crossing guide (the only person able to lead them into and out of the canyon.) The two tribes refuse to cross together until Aang comes up with a solution: Appa will fly both tribes’ sick and elderly across to safety if the two groups agree to share the Earthbender crossing guide. Reluctantly, the tribes agree and enter together, accompanied by Aang, Katara, and Sokka. But once inside the canyon, a vicious canyon crawler attacks the group, injuring the Earthbender guide and leaving the tribes with no way out of the canyon. The current Earth King (the fifty-second in his royal line) was once called Kuei, but after coronation the Earth Kings traditionally renounce any personal name, thereafter referred to only by their title or Your Majesty, and are considered by their subjects as almost god-like in stature. Once proud warrior-kings who ruled their lands personally (and sometimes brutally), over the generations the Earth Kings ceded more and more control over the day-to-day operations of their city to the Byzantine governmental structure that sprung up around them. Now the young Earth King is little more than a figurehead who lives a lavish lifestyle surrounded by courtesans and sycophants, lending one of his royal seals (there are sixty-seven different seals, used on different occasions, depending on the document in question) to whatever decrees and laws his advisors suggest. The current Earth King has never journeyed outside the Palace walls and knows next to nothing about what happens in the outside world. His main interest is in collecting rare animals from around the world, which are brought to him by zoological expeditions sent out from the University of Ba Sing Se.

Kuei became Earth King at the young age of four, when his father, the fifty-first Earth King died. Because he was so young and could not make military decisions, that duty fell to the Grand Secretariat, Long Feng. Long Feng became the Earth Kings de facto guardian as well as his advisor. As Kuei grew older, Long Feng claimed that he thought it best not to trouble the young king with news of the war, so it was decreed that the war would remain a secret from him.
