103June 8, 2016: I also agree with the post critical of how Shen makes a bigger celebrating the scholarships earned by athletes over those in academics. Don’t think the person responding GETS IT. They should be treated the same. Why aren’t those receiving athletic scholarships just recognized at one of the “multiple award nights” along with those receiving academic scholarships? To have a special ceremony in the library where just a few students and their coaches and parents who received athletic scholarships are recognized and always seems to be covered in the local press with pictures is treating them differently and does make it seem that they are more special than someone who earned a scholarship for academics or the arts. My child received a substantial scholarship award for her artistic skills but it was never recognized at any of the “multiple award nights” when she was a senior. Including a link on the Shen website to a list of awards earned for academic excellence is different than posting a picture on the site showing students who earned athletic scholarship. Where are the pictures of students who earned academic scholarships at these award ceremonies? A picture is worth a thousand words.
104June 8, 2016: A Koda student submitted a question about bathroom safety and defacing of school property. The response, “Talk to your principal” was inadequate and dismissive. As a parent, I expect a higher level of concern when a student expresses concern about safety in one of our district buildings. I encourage my own children to report safety issues promptly, but I don’t know this student’s comfort with speaking with school administrators or support from parents. Perhaps this student felt more comfortable submitting an anonymous report. A more appropriate response would be to encourage the student to talk to the principal but also offer a safe, alternative method of alerting administration to detailed concerns. Students have been exposed to illegal drug use, bullied, and assaulted is school bathrooms in various schools. Don’t assume this student is merely observing minor occurrences.
105June 7, 2016: 100% agree with the past post asking why Shen doesn’t publically celebrate its academic scholarship students, but chooses to focus on the athletic scholarship students. Continual emphasis on athletics programs that only support a small percentage of Shens student body destroys the academic integrity of a district. The reputation of the overall “Shen” experience is devalued. Supporting and recognizing a small percentage of the schools student body on a continual basis creates negativity. Shen will loose out to other districts in the competition to attract students and families interested in academic excellence.

This seems kind of unfair, especially since one of my friends whose mom is involved in the PTA funds for Gowana told me that there is enough money to pay for all of the eighth graders to go on the Great Escape field trip for free. Why have sixth and seventh graders, who are not graduating, get to go on more field trips to farther away places?

115June 7, 2016: I hope the English and math departments reconsider their policy on summer HW for high school students. The current policy penalizes students taking honors English or Math. Students in honors ELA are required to read books from a specific list over the summer. For everyone else, it is SUGGESTED they read something over the summer but it is not required. Isn’t this a backward policy? The honors students are more likely to read for enjoyment over the summer. Being forced to choose from a specific list leaves my daughter with less time to read for pleasure. She is bombarded with HW throughout the year. Why not a compromise and let the students select books they enjoy? The same backwards policy applies to the honors math students. Honors students have math HW and regents students do not. Wouldn’t students not in honors receive more of a benefit from summer HW?

I am disturbed that the principal took the forum to advocate very partisan issues, and movements such as the Keep It in the Ground, headed by very left, liberal organizations. Partisan politics have no place in schools, and by having the students stand up and chant his rhetoric and views, the Principal crossed a line into the indoctrination of our children. I call on Dr. Robinson, who was there, to publicly condemn this type of behavior from a school “leader.”

Supposedly Mr. Flynt stated that any seniors who are not present at school the Monday after prom, June 6th, will not be allowed to walk across the stage at graduation. Is this true? If so, does it include excused absences, or just unexcused ones? Thank you.
139June 3, 2016: I personally think the conditions for qualifying for prom should be altered in future years. While it’s true that grades are a determination of character, they should have nothing to do with that decision. Prom is a cherished event that every student should have the right to celebrate, as it’s a symbol of their high school career coming to an end. I know one student in particular who has put no effort whatsoever into his senior year, only taking the courses required to pass. He has six free periods and does absolutely nothing every single day. That student can go to prom. I also know of another student, one who is sincerely pushing himself in his classes, taking difficult courses and having almost no free periods, all while balancing other things in his life such as college and his family. That student may not be able to go to prom, because he’s (just barely) failing his two hardest courses. Who goes to prom should be decided strictly on attendance and behavior. Does it sound right for someone with a completely clean record and perfect attendance, but struggling in his/her classes to be forcibly held out of one of the most important high school traditions in American history?

I called at about 12:00 and the women that answered said that it was too late to get the hw which is rediculous becuase they never said that you had to call at a certain time. I am furious with the school and hope they treat other people better.

152June 2, 2016: One of the FACS teachers has been being very rude to my child. When she smiles she yells at her to stop laughing. I believe that this is not fair to my child. She works very hard but FACS is her lowest grade. I saw her sock puppet and it was very good and she got a 50% on it. As a sewist, I know the criteria that was set for my child, and she succeded. I believe that this teacher should be talked to.
153June 2, 2016: We just want to say thank you for the transportation departments quick and thorough response to behavior issues on our child’s bus. The swearing and yelling have stopped and the students feel much more comfortable…As parents we are relieved.

180May 23, 2016: I’m a junior and since juniors can’t drive to school I have to take the bus. My bus comes at approximately 6:34am and sometimes earlier. I find myself almost missing the bus because it consistently comes earlier as the week progresses. When my bus gets to campus, at 6:50am, we have to wait on the bus until 7:10am. That’s 20 minutes of sitting on the bus Infront of school. My question is Why can’t the bus drivers pick the students up at least five minutes later instead of rushing to school to wait Infront for 20 minutes?

It is well known that Autism Speaks is a bad organization who’s ideals are in the wrong place. For starters they don’t have a single autistic member on their board. Much of Autism Speaks’ money goes toward research that centers on finding a way to eliminate autism, instead of helping and understanding individuals with autism. They also make advertisments and small films about what a burden autistic people are to society. They only dehumanize and ridicule autistic people and do little to help autistic families in need. They create a stigma that makes it difficult for autistic people to be heard and for their opinions to matter. I encourage the school to promote autism awareness but not by donating to Autism Speaks. For the past consecutive 19 Thursdays, fries were served. I was almost certain the serving of fries occurred every Thursday, but today proved to be devastating in that fries weren’t served. Pls serve fries on donnerstags.

While there is such a negative stigma attached to mental illness, and we do need to be careful with such a fragile concept, we need to implement something, whether it be occasional guest speakers, posters, or an open door policy, for the sake of our children. There are many struggling each day and we must reach out. When we open up to them, they’ll most likely open to us. While these discussions are tough, we must have them. If we could just help one person, that’s all that matters. Death from anything else other than suicide is handled very differently in this district, and it’s not sending a positive message to our students. Please consider.

I respect all of the work you do for our school, and I know this school work’s so hard to help kids reach to their full potential. But.., sometime’s it can often do a disservice to it’s students. High school isn’t always about just having the highest grades in your class or getting into the top school. Many people/parents, ( I included), believe that Shen only teaches people to have good grades. I am aware that is what school is for but they do not stress anything else. I am a very involved parent and I talk to a lot of the kids and notice how unhappy they are at the school. I understand that that is high school and many people dislike it but when I teach at Columbia, most of the student’s love it. I am concerned that the students are being stretched too thin and that Shen doesn’t stress anything except to have good grades when there are many other values in life.

In courses like this, all classes should be held to the same standards no matter what teacher you have. The same tests should be given and categories in the gradebook should be weighted the same. I just completed a course where I had the “harder” teacher and I came out knowing more about the subject than people in the other teacher’s classes, but having a lower grade. I know teachers have different styles and I’m not mad that I got the “harder” teacher, but this disparity in grading is affecting people’s GPA unfairly. There should really be consistency in the grading policy for each course.

That baseball league is now advertising they are a “feeder” program for the school baseball team. If there are incidents with coaches from this league in front of other teams from other areas, it will reflect on the school district negatively. In addition, this gives the appearance to the kids in the Round Lake Baseball League (200+ kids) and the Halfmoon Baseball League (400 + kids), all of which reside in the Shen school system that the school will only allow kids on their school baseball team if they came thru the Clifton Park Baseball League.

For example, having high school have school start at 8:40, having middle school start at 8:00 and having elementary start at the high school time. This would make sense because the high schoolers have the most hw, and the least time to sleep. Elementary schools in other regions start earlier, so they should get used to waking up early to go to school. They are the least stressed out with school, so it just makes sense.

529January 26, 2016: Is there a district position on an elementary school PTA hosting a ‘gala’ to raise general funds (not for a specific purchase)? PTA’s are not independent. The school squashes ideas all the time. It seems exclusionary to have an event with a $90 per couple price tag (plus baby sitting, raffle tickets, auctions, etc.) I understand fundraising, but not treating the PTA (and in turn the school) as a charity. Begging local businesses for donations as if the elementary school is a real charity does not sit well when explaining to our kids what charity is.

532January 26, 2016: Will the current high school math students take both the regular regents and the common core regents this year? I thought I read on grapevine they take both, but the common core regents doesn’t count against them. Last year, my nephew took the common core algebra regents only as an 8th grader. My son is in Algebra H as a 9th grader. Will he be taking both tests? Please clarify.
533January 26, 2016: I go to HSW and I often find my algebra teacher and other teachers making mistakes very often. The mistakes are often found in homeworks and tests. I understand algebra is not an easy thing to teach but it has come to the point where kids are getting rewarded when they catch the teachers mistakes. I believe the topics we are suppose to be learning are not being taught correctly. Students are struggling and often making comments about failing and not feeling confident with tests and quizzes. This adds anxiety and pressure to a child’s day and effects the way the person works the rest of the school day. I have talked to many other kids that take the same course as I do and they are often getting low grades due to how poorly it’s being taught. Will there ever be an improvement of the teaching staff?

535January 25, 2016: If Acadia is going to use the side entrance as a bus port why haven’t they put in a sidewalk for the kids. This is where all the special ed buses load/unload. Aside from the obvious safety issues, when the district recently re-paved the parking lot (left a 3′ wide boarder of dirt) now they kids are walking through dirt (mud when it’s raining) to access the busses. The least they could have done is put sod down. Please explain when and how this will be addressed.

560January 20, 2016: I had an interesting encounter with a High School faculty member this morning. I dropped my daughter and her friend off at the back of High School East this morning. I did not completely enter the circle and wrongly took the shortcut of not driving around the circle, but rather making a U-turn to exit campus. Before doing so, I recognized that a woman was preparing to walk from her parked car toward the school about 15 yards from me. I yielded to her, as did another vehicle coming around the circle. She asked me to put my window down and asked that, in the future, I use the circle. I agreed with her, recognizing that I should have. She then proceeded to advise me that failure to do so “could result in [her] being hit by a car, and then she wouldn’t have the chance to have my kid and FAIL them.” I smiled, closed my window and proceeded on my way. I have no problem admitting that I was wrong in making the U-turn, however neither she nor anyone else was in danger of getting hit, as I was well aware of my surroundings. I do wish, however, that I took the time to respond to her completely unprofessional statement re: my kids and her apparent desire to fail them and perhaps anyone else who has the pleasure of being in her class. Perhaps she had a bad morning, or she is just truly a horrible teacher and person. Hopefully it’s the former and not the latter. Now I feel better having gotten that off my chest. Thanks for reading.

570January 15, 2016: The Acadia student who brought the knife to school was recently in a fight and beat up a student in gym class. Why was this student only suspended for 5 days? Why isn’t a Superintendents Hearing being held? This student should not be in school and obviously needs an outside placement before a middle school student or teacher is seriously injured. I bet this won’t be posted, but I would love an explanation from our Superintendent.
571January 15, 2016: For when the outdoor seasons begin, Shen should put recycling bins on its athletic fields. During this Fall’s season, I had not seen one recycling bin on any of the fields- just garbage cans, which is ridiculous considering how so many players and spectators bring plastic water bottles to sporting events. I would bring as many as I could home with me and I encouraged others to bring their water bottles home to recycle as well, but still, many were either left on the benches, on the ground, or in the garbage cans. We should get recycling bins because 1. Shen may deposit them and receive money for them 2. It will make our campus prettier and neater and 3. They are better for the environment And no, this is not the first time I’ve brought this up to the school or a school official. Thank you
572January 15, 2016: I was just wondering if Shen can ever be one of those schools that instead on pin # for lunch or asking for a name to check a book out we get a barcode on the back on out student ID cards, one for books another for food. Students can get lanyards for their IDS and that would how the school work. This would come into play in 6th grade

Today I had to literally slam on my brakes, throwing my child and myself forward, being stopped by our seatbelts, because of a car filled with four boys came shooting from the parking lot into the pull out lane, missing my car by an inch. Then preceded to laugh and flip me off !! This stuff happens EVERYDAY !!! Isn’t driving to school a privilege? What can be done about this? If we are allowing children to drive to school, the school should be responsible for maintaining/monitoring the parking lot. Can we get licenses plate numbers and call the school with them?? It is ridiculous and someone is going to be seriously injured one day by these ignorant children that shouldn’t be driving.

611January 12, 2016: Since many other schools in our Section have 4 levels of girls (and boys) soccer teams, will Shen be adding a grade 7-8 team next fall? Nisky and Saratoga are two that immediately come to mind. We have the player pool to support a 4th team. It seems crazy that Shen does not have a true 7-8 modified team. The girls side doesn’t even allow 7th graders to tryout. At least the boys side does…let’s fix this! Add the 4th team and everyone will be happy! We need to know soon as “offseason” training will be starting soon. Don’t want these 7th graders left out!
