49US Marshal Carrie Stetko has been stationed at the Amundsen-Scott Base in Antarctica for two years, and will quit the Marshal service and head home to Miami in a few days. She originally took the job as something mindless to escape a professional situation which made her question her on-the-job judgment. Her plans change when a dead body is found on the ice outside. Upon investigation by the base physician "Doc" John Fury, the dead man was found to be murdered. The dead man is Anton Weiss, one of a crew of three geologists stationed at a nearby base, they who were searching for meteorites. Although it means staying at the base for at least another six months due to an on-coming storm and impending winter, Carrie decides to stay to complete the investigation of the case. Much to her chagrin, the United Nations sends a special envoy, Robert Pryce, to investigate as well, he states because it is the first ever murder in Antarctica which in and of itself warrants special attention, although there are ulterior motives to his participation which he does not initially divulge. Carrie and Robert's first mission is to find the other two geologists who probably know what is going on. But they also have to be mindful that the murderer is still on the loose, he or she by his or her very presence who endangers the lives of all those on the confined base. If they do discover the entire truth, they will find that the motive to the murderer goes deeper than it appears on the surface.

She investigates, soon finds more bodies, and must find a motive and a murderer before the storm and her departure. A U.N. agent, Robert Pryce, appears, seemingly out of nowhere, to help. An aging physician about to retire, a nervous mission chief, a downed Soviet plane, and the weather's deadly elements add to the story. Can Carrie trust Pryce and does she still have what it takes?
51I actually felt this movie was fairly decent. Looking at a lot of the reviews, people seem to feel so outraged at how horrible this movie apparently was, but I don't know what they were expecting. If you're that angry about the supposed "twist" foreshadowed in the trailer, then you should have been smart enough to know that the chances of this movie coming through with some amazing and original twist were very slim.<br/><br/>Anyway, as for the film itself, there were definitely many flaws. That stupid shower scene in the first 10 minutes of the movie was so tactless I was almost ready to leave. The acting was mediocre at best. I think Gabriel Macht is an extremely good looking guy, but based on this film he is a horrendous actor. Kate Beckinsale was okay as the lead... She had her moments. The dialogue was so cheesy though. And the film was just also very predictable and tedious. The flashback scenes in particular got pretty annoying as pretty much the same exact scene was repeated at least 3 or 4 times throughout the movie.<br/><br/>But perhaps the best aspect of the film is the scenery. The outside shots were beautiful. The whole idea of being on Antarctica was fascinating and is perhaps the main reason why I was able to put up with many of its flaws. I wish they developed that aspect of the story more. I also felt some of the blood and gore were also well done. It was more tasteful than a slasher movie but still just as gut-wrenching.
52I had no previous interest in seeing WHITEOUT-the only reason I bothered at all was because it's about the only thing at Redbox I haven't seen yet. Shoulda waited for some new-releases. <br/><br/>Kate Beckinsale plays a U.S. Marshall in Antarctica who gets caught up in some convoluted plot involving Russians and a mysterious plane crash from the '50s. The rest is downhill from there. <br/><br/>There's plenty of things that are completely ridiculous in this film. So many in fact, that it's pointless to try to list them-others have done it on the board for this one. As for any 'positives'-the acting is passable and the Antarctic location makes a good, desolate setting for a thriller. And we get to see Beckinsale briefly in her underwear-but this is tempered by the fact that any actual nudity that we get to see is from a bunch of idiots who decide to go streaking in sub-zero temperatures with their dongs flappin' out. In all fairness, WHITEOUT isn't a horrible film per se, but it's completely unremarkable in every way, is pretty predictable, and takes itself far too seriously for all the holes in the details that it contains. Not the worst thing I've ever seen (by far...), but I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone. 3.5/10  Â

Whiteout is adapted from a 4-issue comic-book miniseries written by Greg Rucka with art by Steve Lieber, published by Oni Press in 1998. The story was collected as a graphic novel in 2001. Much of the work at the station revolves around analysing core samples of ice. The Antarctic ice pack has been accumulating for millennia. As it accumulates, gas from the atmosphere is trapped in the ice. By drilling down into the ice and removing core samples, scientists can measure the composition of the atmosphere when the ice first formed. By examining other details of the ice, they can make judgements about temperature levels. Because the ice has been compressed under tons of more ice for millennia, the gas trapped in the ice is extremely compressed. If you put the ice in room temperature water or liquor, this compressed gas escapes, making it look like it is boiling. a5c7b9f00b
