404
405
406
Salutations, loyal subscribers and audience to our Howrse-related ramblings, our filly-affiliated facts, our colt-correlated cultivations and everything in-between! The eclectic mix of individuals that make up the SHG team would like to collectively thank you for your lasting support of us in all our newswriting endeavours! Without a readership, the very point of what we do at the Silver Hooves Gazette becomes irrelevant. It is you who have taken the time to review our work; you who have been most generous in your donations to our Senior staff. It is you who have been following our humble Howrse paper as it has grown.
407

408You have kept this paper alive and thriving, and thus facilitated the formation of friendships that would have otherwise gone un-formed.
409

410For this occasion, we wanted to give our staff a chance to pause, reflect on their time as Silver Hooves Gazette employees, and to take a look back at the road we have all traversed thus far – with you, who have been with us every step of the way! And so, we feel an apt theme for this, our 75th Anniversary issue, is memories! (We’d love to hear your favourite SHG memories too, so feel free to leave one at the bottom of your review!)
411

412Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, and now is the time to embrace it. It is you, dear readers, who have gotten us here, to our 75th Anniversary issue! So, relax, sit back, and enjoy this labour of love, from us to you.
413

414Much Love,
508
Howrse has been a game that has shaped people and their lives. It’s been a place for people to make memories, good and bad, and treasure them for years to come. There may be rough spots along the way but in the long run, Howrse is an amazing community where players meet other players, create art, write, learn new things, and of course, care for their treasured howrses.

517
In the spirit of "memories" one issue in particular springs to mind. This is an issue that has plagued those close to the Silver Hooves Gazette—and its affiliates—countless times in the past, and continues to do so to this day.

518
519
It's been something that has followed us along from the very beginning, like a particularly sticky piece of gum on the bottom of Graphics Artists' shoes.

520
For both those who are artistically inclined, and those who aren't, creative expression has been and always will be our go-to outlet when it comes to projecting our thoughts and ideas visually. Whether it be a little doodle on your algebra paper or an artful arrangement of codes and design, artistic expression is putting a piece of yourself into your work, stamping it with your personality.

521
522
Now, it's time for a fun little analogy. Imagine this: you have just finished a painting, your best work yet. The process was difficult, it took a lot out of you to make it what it is—and then someone, someone with the slimy, sticky fingers of a Gecko, rips the painting—your painting—from your hands. They hold it up, look you dead in the eye with haughty arrogance, and tell you, straight-faced and unapologetic, "This is mine. I painted this." Similarly, someone else sees your painting, wishes that they could have themselves produced such brilliance, and proceeds to "create" a sub-par (at best) rip-off of it.

528
529
Today, I’m bringing to you, dear readers, some insider info on a major, and unfortunately ever-present and all-too common issue throughout the Howrse community. That is, the issue of graphics-ripping.

530
531
If only these particular memories could be quashed—but, alas, the continuation of this trend of unoriginality makes forgetting impossible. So let’s look back on this timeline of graphics ripping, shall we?

532
533
For the Silver Hooves Gazette’s resident graphics artist, her first experience with graphics-ripping dates right back to 2012; the year of “Call Me Maybe†and 12-year-old girls who wanted to be Katniss (me).

534
535
“They took this code + images
536
537

538
539“and made their ‘own’ layout from it. and when i pmed them about it they said that they learned the code from xyz sources. and i looked at them and called them out on it like hey the style that these sources code is wildly different from mine and ur code is like 100% mine.â€

540
541
This is a matter of graphics-orderers knowing what to look for, and recognising when certain code has been taken.

542
543

544
545
546
Graphics ripping is not exclusive to layouts. Here we have an instance where an artist's avatar was replicated almost exactly:

547
548
Original:

551
552
In some cases, it’s the subtle, casual theft of original concepts that really hit home the most for genuine graphics artists.

553
554

Exhibit B
(top versus bottom):

555
556
This particular case involved a now-retired breeder, who climbed swiftly up the ranks to Graphics Artist Stardom within 30 days of having started graphics making. They were found to have directly copied code from another site, AsianFanfics.com, and tweaked a couple of images and copied design features and codes from a number of original artists—and became very successful because of this.

557
558

559
560
Why, because they had “inspiration†of course!

561
562
Asian Fanfiction Layout:

564
Ripped Layout:

565
566
Graphics ripping transcends beyond howrse.

567
568
When Howrse Graphics artist á´á´á´É´á´€É¢á´‡ á´…á´€Êᴅʀᴇᴀá´ was asked about the matter, she had much to say:

569
570
“I honestly can’t think of anything more insulting to an artist than copying & stealing their work. Because I’m not gonna lie, making new borders, trying new styles and ideas can take me ages to come up with. I mean I can have music blasting and that creative mood, but I trash everything again and again. And then I finally have something I’m happy with that I decide to share with other people, whether it’s just going to be on my page for a bit, or even a premade that I took time for people to use as they’d like. But then someone looking for a bit of “inspiration†rolls in and just starts saving your work, lots of it, and adding a few minor details, and start spreading it around like wildfire to the point that people believe that they’re the original creator, and praise them for all of YOUR hard work. It's like stealing someone’s imagination honestly, because when it comes to you, and you finally get that perfect border, or that layout to flow just right, that’s all your creative juices working. Then when some knucklehead comes along and swipes it, it’s honestly like they don’t even care or appreciate how much time and effort you put into it.â€

571
572
The idea of “inspiration†has been constantly abused, and used as an excuse for theft. It is one thing to see something you like, and create something new and original with that in mind, but it’s quite another to replicate art, under the guise of being “inspired†by it.

573
574

575
576
Some further examples of “inspiration†include:

577
578
Original Design:

579
580
Ripped-off Design:

581
582
Alternatively, a common excuse when rippers are accused of ripping is that they somehow "learned that somewhere else," despite it being a direct replica of a style unique to a certain graphics artist, that they developed over the years.

583
584

Exhibit C

585Original:

586
587
Ripped layout that wishes it was original:

588
589
The above work was done by perhaps the most notorious of graphics-rippers, and one that has caused those close to the SHG much grief in the past, has been approached multiple times regarding their ripping, but has refused to take responsibility each time.

590
591
This person also has the audacity to denounce graphics ripping, and demand common courtesy when they themselves have none:

592
593

594
595
As it stands, there is no official rule on Howrse that prohibits this kind of behaviour, and graphics rippers are taking full advantage of that, and will be for a long time. What can you do about this, you ask? Well, that's easy. Support original artists, and phase out the use of stolen work from notorious rippers.

628
Welcome to Username Tales!

629
630
Username Tales is a column that reveals the deeper meanings behind our labels, clarifies the backgrounds and meanings of our “sobriquets,†and satisfies our curiosities about our fellow Howrsers’ aliases.

631
632
For this issue, Wawaspmoqa is our very special guest. This is a special edition of Username Tales because this member also told of their personal journey on Howrse. Not only do they have an interesting username, they have also been a member of Howrse since 2007. Wawaspmoqa shared many things about their time spent here on Howrse. The following is their story:

633
634

My username is my Native American name which [sic] means “Lighting.†I belong to the “Prairie Band Pottawatomie Nation†with a little more than 5000 members. The “Prairie Band Pottawatomie Nation†reservation is located in Mayetta, Kansas.

635
636
There are many creative people that [sic] put time into expressing themselves. For me, I decided to choose a virtual fantasy that helps one trip into the cyber world of make-believe.

637
638
I can’t remember how I came across Howrse, but I was addicted when I signed up. I enjoyed the concept of the game and the challenge of increasing [sic] skills of the herds I had been gathering. I might have even spent a few dollars along the way [sic] which served for good entertainment. (It is actually cheaper than having the real live [sic] herd I used to breed and raise, anyways!) I also enjoy checking out other member’s pages and seeing what their icons look like.

639
640
My icon (Nic~Ta~Shaw Ranch) is my Logo [sic]. “Nic~Ta~Shaw†means horse, so it made perfect sense. Even though my ranch is small, it really does exist. It consists of 40 acres in Southern Colorado. The land is fallow and far from becoming what one sees on Howrse, but make-believe is what it is truly all about.

641
642
I wish I could say it has always been a joy to be on Howrsse [sic], but I did take some time out for a couple of years. Conflicts arose with another player [sic] that [sic] took the game far too seriously, and they began to bully me. I had no idea what it was about (I still don’t.), nor did I do anything to make them upset with me. All I can say is [sic] I felt bullied, and it took the fun out of the game for a while. S,o [sic] I stopped...

643
644
For years, I missed out on something that I had enjoyed up until I felt the horns of a bully. Thinking it wasn’t worth the trouble, I found other activities over the years. While searching the net one day, I saw a link of my account to [sic] Howrse. I decided to click on it, and I have logged in every day since. Was it Faith [sic]? Who knows! What I do know is that I like this game, and as long as I can login [sic], I will.

645
646
If I have gained anything from that ordeal, it is to remember that it is only a game. But it is your game. So play it the way you want [sic] and don’t let anyone try to dictate to you how to play. I decided I won’t be bothered anymore by crazies who take the fun out of the game.

647
648
It is so good to be back and to find [sic] my account was still active. There have been many changes since I have been gone...most [sic] I like. My herd’s skills are ancient compared to where the levels have gotten today, but that’s ok. Everyone has done such a wonderful job and worked so hard to reach those skill levels. I am still finding that things are a bit different, and I’[m [sic] trying to get back up to speed.

649
650
So this was my journey: pleasant for the most part [sic] when I’ve been a part of the game. I regret those 48 hours so many years ago where I had let bullying dictate my game and keep me from being a part of Howrse until very recently. But I am so pleased to see it is still going strong.

657
DISCLAIMER: This article, as hinted by the title, is a negative, salt-filled article about Howrse and its promotions. If this article is not for you, please skip over it.

658
659

* * *

660
661
Howrse in many ways is a great game, but there are some aspects that drive me crazy and make me hate Howrse. In this article, I will be talking about the features that really irk me about Howrse!

662
663
To start off, let’s talk about the absurd amount of money you have to use to get far in the game. Yes, I do understand that, like most companies, Owlient/Ubisoft needs to make money. The thing is, though, that Ubisoft already has an incredible amount of money coming in from all their games and companies. Ubisoft’s net income clocks in at 139.45 million euros, which is 123.33 million pounds or 163 million U.S. dollars, a huge amount of money. Howrse’s promotions are the worst offenders for money grabbing, as every single one requires the use of many passes to even get close to winning the divine. This is normally through the use of buying boosters or some other thing made to help in the promotion. For example, in the Insular Mine promotion (which was actually one of the easier promos to progress through) boosters were available to buy to quicken the process of a chest opening. They could be obtained out of chests, but only a couple of them could be won. In the black market, however, eight boosters were available for a pass and 600 boosters were available for 50 passes. This would in fact equal £50, which is a lot of money to spend on boosters for a game. The other possible item that could be used was the master key, which opens all chests once three is obtained. I am especially sour about this item because I thought it was free—as the first time it was—so when I used it again to open my chests, my only pass had been spent. It didn’t even have a pop-up asking, “Are you sure you want to buy this?â€

664
665
Another reason I hate Howrse is that it is practically impossible to really get anywhere as a new player, or even a younger player. Speaking as someone who restarted their game rather recently, it’s hard to get up in the rankings and get good horses, especially without a lot of equus. A lot of Howrse is balanced on people making cutthroat teams, which consists of people making the GP and skill levels shoot up. It stops people with lower GP horses getting anywhere unless they have the equus or passes to buy higher ranked horses. It also makes it harder for other breeders who aren’t in highly ranked teams to get to the top.

666
667
My final problems with Howrse aren’t about Howrse itself, but rather, some of the people on it. That consists of scammers, some people who are downright crazy, people who appear nice and well-liked but are actually not the best people, and the ones who don’t get that this isn’t real life—that it’s just a game.

668
669
To finish this rather grim article, let’s talk about some of the good things about Howrse! To start, all the GA coats and Helios’ Ray backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous and are made by the creative people in this community. Additionally, my best online friends are people I’ve met through Howrse and through the Silver Hooves Gazette. (Looking at you, Del :) ) Lets end this on a happy note by saying that I do truly appreciate and love Howrse and its community, and my life wouldn’t be the same without it.

674
Many users on Howrse find themselves asking: “What is it that I’d like to accomplish?†For some, that may mean putting their horses through competition, for others perhaps they enjoy the breeding aspect of Howrse. I have personally found myself to set personal goals, and that has led me to be a little bit of a BMI horse collector! When the Fifth Element BMI showed up on Howrse, I was immediately captivated! I set out with a new goal: achieve obtaining every coat of the Fifth Element.

675
676
My journey began when I had saved up enough passes from accruing enough days of seniority. When I was able to purchase my first Fifth Element from the Black Market, I excitedly rushed to the horse I’d decided to gift it to, and lo and behold I received a Water coat. When I had saved up enough passes from seniority, I attempted again and received another Water coat. I came to the conclusion that Water must be the most common coat, and I was determined to gain the rest. It wasn’t long before I also attained the Air coat by purchasing the horse in the Direct Sales.

677
678
When I finally received my Earth, Fire and Metal coats, I was prepared. With over 500,000 equus and having purchased forty passes out of my own pocket, I set out with a single goal: ‘gotta catch ‘em all.’ It was easier than I had originally expected, as time had gone on between the time I started to save up enough to feel comfortable spending my own money from out of pocket, the Earth and Fire coats had become easier to find. However, searching through pages and pages of Water, Air, Earth and Fire, it took me an entire week to find a Metal coat. Admittedly, I splurged 15 passes and 100,000 equus to purchase it, as I was more than eager and had began to lose hope of finding one in the Direct Sales. The adrenaline kicked in as I hurried to click the ‘Purchase Horse’ button, and the amount of pride I gained from having the whole collection (and now the trophy to prove it!) was almost overwhelming!

679
680
Searching on any given day, in a group of 200 horses in the Direct Sales, searching specifically for horses with the Fifth Element, only ten for sale had the Metal coat. The average rate of finding a Metal coat through the Direct Sales, is a measly 5%. Despite being as rare to find as they are, the price they are sold for is much like any other horse that has no BMI attached to it at all! Some players selling rare coats are still flexible and willing to negotiate the price even with a high price tag attached, while others will sell their rare coats on a firm, but more affordable cost. The selling price could be anywhere between 500 equus to at least 1,000,000 equus, with the pass rate being anywhere from as low as 6 to as high as 20 or more!

681
682

683
684
Since having purchased Eligias, my own Metal coat horse, finding the Metal coat is more likely than it was several months ago. However, should you desire to purchase one, my advice for other players who enjoy the sport of collecting, it is best to be prepared with a high amount of equus and passes on hand. Regardless of how much they sell for, all of them are costly on one end or the other. If your patience is high, and you are ambitious, determined and keen on having one, my best advice would be to plan ahead! Sell everything you don’t need from your inventory, grow crops and/or settle cows in your equestrian center and sell them as well, save your passes from seniority, participate in the Howrse hosted game events to rack up BMIs, and is possible, take full advantage of the BMI exchanges to see if you can trade passes and/or other BMIs for a Fifth Element and try your luck! When all is said and done, the amount of pride you’ll feel for putting in the time and effort is more than worth it!

694
Memory. mÉ›m(É™)ri. Noun. “The faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information†and “something remembered from the past.â€

695
696
Every person on the planet has memories stored away in their head, whether it be the memory of a math equation needed to complete a problem or the memory of attending a wedding, the human brain works through a process of encoding, storing, and retrieving experiences and knowledge to create memories.

697
698
Memory is the activation of a specific group of neurons (nerve cells), formed from persistent changes in the strength of connections between neurons. The connections made between synapses (the ends of neurons) are what allow memories to become stronger or weaker. Memories become stronger if the connections between synapses are used often. In contrast, memories fade if the synapse connections have not been activated in a long time. This process is called synaptic plasticity.

699
700
The most important part of the brain that is involved in forming memories is the hippocampus. Brand new synaptic connections (and therefore new memories) are created in this part of the brain during the process of neurogenesis.

701
702

703
704
In simple terms, there are two types of memories: long-term and short-term. In order to explore how memories are classified, the diagram below should aid you.

705
706

707
708
As seen in the diagram, long-term memory is split into explicit and implicit memories. Your conscious (explicit) memories are those which you recall through deliberately thinking of them. On the other hand, implicit (unconscious) memories are split into a further two categories. Procedural memories involve learning motor skills, such as riding a bike or learning how to type on a keyboard. The second unconscious memory is a priming memory which occurs when exposure to one stimulus influences your brain’s response to another. Short-term memory enables the brain to remember a small amount of information for a short period of time; the shortest memory is known as a working memory, which lasts only a few seconds. These working memories are usually engaged during cognitive processes, such as remembering the numbers of a phone number as someone recites them.

709
710
The process of creating memories and understanding what goes on inside your head is somewhat odd. The human brain is an amazing thing, and not all of our capabilities have been discovered or understood yet...

714
715
It often amuses me to wonder what the first horse ever ridden thought. Now, I often wonder what my horse thinks of me. I devote so much time, energy, money, and emotional energy into him, so he better love me. He does trust me. He lets me walk him past scary garbage cans, through bottomless puddles, into the evil trailer over and over. It is a feeling unlike any other, to be trusted by a horse.

716
717
From the day I left the hospital, new to this world, horses were a part of my life. They galloped across my blankets and dresses, and slept clutched in my arms at night. They lived their private lives outside my window, rested their muzzles on my head, and even carried me upon their backs. I wouldn't have left that old red barn for the world.

718
719
I watched my brother give up riding, then my sister drift away, and I felt a racing excitement. Now, I had the horses to myself. I rode a chestnut pony over jumps, made endless mistakes, and gave him every reason to buck me off. Yet that little saint of a pony put up with my eccentric behavior like a tried and tested babysitter. He played his tricks, but I only learned from them.

720
721
Now that same home bred, backyard pony is a dressage horse, heading to a national competition. He didn't learn anything new; I did. I discovered the key to unlock his secrets, and what amazing secrets they were.

722
723
Now, instead of clutching to a horse’s mane for dear life, I squeeze, breathe, and play with the bit.

724
725
Not every equestrian was able to experience what I did. Many can afford push button ponies who teach them everything. Are they any less of a rider than I am? Not at all. They put their blood, sweat, and tears into this sport like I did, and they deserve the best for it. Some equestrians even taught their ponies everything, and to them, I take off my hat.

726
727
There is one thing every equestrian has in common: the equine. These magnificent animals, with their flowing manes and deadly hooves. The wild beasts that go against every instinct by allowing a predator to sit upon their back. They are what make us, or break us. They give us some of the happiest moments of our lives, and one of the saddest. They are our pride and joy, and our greatest sorrow. They are unique in every way, loving, and full of personality just waiting to be discovered.

728
729
They are our best friends.

734
Every equestrian and horse lover alike knows the name of the great Valegro: the small but mighty 16.2hh Dutch Warmblood gelding that stole the hearts of nations. He won countless medals including individual and team gold in the 2012 Olympics; Individual gold in the 2016 Olympics; gold in both the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special events in 2013 and 2015; and Individual gold in 2014 at the World Equestrian Games. He even broke his own world record for the highest freestyle score ever recorded with a score of 93.4%. All of this was accomplished before his retirement in 2016 when he bid farewell to show life at the young age of fourteen. Since then, he has had a Breyer horse modeled after him and a book series published all about his life—he even has a Facebook page! However, to say that we know The Valegro based off of these facts would be crazy! So, who is Charlotte Dujardin’s sweet boy?

735

737
738
During an interview with Charlotte back in 2015, Valegro’s real personality came out. He actually prefers the name “Blueberryâ€, and this name portrays a very special part of his life: food. Charlotte insisted that he has no greater love than his love for all things edible. When he is out on hacks, he likes to drag his rider from grass patch to bush to tree for every little morsel of food he can find. This can sometimes pose a problem for the rider, who hacks him out, because often times it’s the 77 year young Mrs. Tricia Gardiner. Mrs. Gardiner rode for the British Dressage Team at the Olympics in 1988 and now enjoys hacking horses in her free time.

739
740
“Mentally she still thinks she’s a teenager but obviously physically this isn’t the case... she finds it hard to walk and get on a horse now,†says Charlotte. “She literally drags Blueberry to the highest mounting block she can find and makes him stand in a position which is good for her to climb on from, faffs around a bit and drags herself up... you would honestly look at him and think he was a bog-standard, happy hacker. He then goes up the road with her, eating his way through any hedge he can find... she really needs some grass reins to keep him on the straight and narrow! It’s hilarious to watch...â€

743
744
Blueberry, as we now know him, has lived and will continue to live a splendid life full of green turnout fields and love. His owners have revealed that he will still make guest appearances and demonstrations, but he will never again grace the show ring with his powerful dance. It is a sad thing to say farewell to old memories, but the mighty Valegro has left the space for a new, exciting successor. But, who will be the next Valegro?

749
Whether you have a dog, cat, horse, or hamster, we all want to capture their cuteness on camera. Unfortunately, our furry friends are quite often uncooperative, and would much rather go back to eating dirt or give you the grumpiest look possible. Never fear, however; it is possible to get great pictures of your pet without a professional photographer! Here are some tips that should get your pet photos from looking subpar to splendid.

750
751
Tip #1: Figure out what camera you are using and how to best utilize it. For taking photos of your pets, you don’t need a fancy Canon or Nikon camera; relying on your phone or your simple point-and-shoot camera is fine! However, make sure that you know how to use all your camera’s features before you attempt a photoshoot with your pet. Then you won’t need to spend time figuring out where the zoom button is when your pet is already in position and waiting (not so patiently).

752
753
754
755
Tip #2: Scope out the right spot to shoot. This is a place where you and the animal are safe, but also a place with lots of natural light and an uncluttered background. For example, consider taking pictures of your horse out in its pasture or in an arena, or take your dog to a nearby park. Lighting is also the key to good photography, and all that is truly needed is access to natural light. This could be shooting by a window or being outside, particularly during the time before sunrise or sunset.

756
757
Tip #3: Clean up your pet. You might have a nice camera, but will that really matter if your horse is covered in dirt or if your dog’s fur is sticking up in every direction? Take the time to give your pet a bath or groom it, making it look clean and shiny. If you want to go the extra mile, you could always add hair bows or braid your horse’s mane!

758
759
760
761
Tip #4: Grab someone to help be animal wrangler. There is nothing more frustrating during a photoshoot than setting up your pet in the perfect spot, grabbing your camera, and then having your pet dart out of view at the very last second. Having an extra person with you will be useful in that they can hold onto your pet’s leash or lead rope. Furthermore, they can hold treats or toys up behind you to encourage your pet to look towards the camera rather than at the squirrel that just ran past.

762
763
Tip #5: Take lots of photos. You never know which are going to look decent, so it’s better to have too much of a good thing than only a couple slightly blurry pictures. Even though it might be a pain to sort through all the photos afterwards, it’s generally quite easy to pick out the best of them all. You may only end up with ten pictures out of two hundred, but at least you still have ten great photos of your pet rather than thirty half-decent ones.

764
765
766
767
Tip #6: Try various angles. At first it’s easy to get caught up in shooting head-on, pointing your camera directly at your pet’s face. These photo may look cute, but consider standing on a chair and looking down at your dog, or laying in the grass and shooting up towards your horse. A change in perspective makes a photo more interesting. It can also be fun to shoot macro, zooming in as close as possible and taking pictures of small details, such as your cat’s fine whiskers or the texture of your pony’s mane.

768
769
Tip #7: Have fun. Remember, a photoshoot should be fun for both you and your pet. If it becomes stressful, chances are that your photos will show that your pet isn’t having fun. Keep the mood light, and make sure to praise your pet for doing the simplest of things such as sitting still for thirty seconds or looking at the camera. Give your pet short breaks let them know how good they’re being!

770
771
Pet photography can be a struggle, especially when your pet isn’t being cooperative, but the results are so rewarding. As you gain experience, you’ll find what works best for you and your pet, and will keep producing better and better pictures! If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, try adding another animal onto the scene (taking pictures of two dogs is much trickier than just one), or asking a friend to pose with their pet. There are always opportunities to advance your photography skills and here’s hoping that these tips help you get some perfect pictures!

I sometimes forget that two years ago, we wouldn’t be able to even do simple canter changes, let alone thinking about flying changes. She used to not understand personal space and just push you over when leading, and it used to take 15-30 minutes for her to take the bit. Nowadays she happily walks beside you and will offer to take the bit herself, and is even ridden in a side-pull at times. At my first show I fell off and now she has been competed at a huge competition with the calmest attitude, even winning a placing. After completely disassembling his cage to make sure he was not hiding in there, we began to look for him. We moved furniture, boxes and bags, and everything imaginable with no luck. After what seemed a long time of searching, my sister heard a rustle. And then, she heard a squeak. We looked around everywhere too see where the noise was coming from. And low and behold, there was a little naughty hamster staring down from the tippy-top of the curtain. I ran as fast as I could with an empty shoebox to rescue my sweet baby ham. Pushing aside everything in my path, I climbed on top of the furniture to reach him. As soon as I got close enough to look the little adventurer in the eye, he leaped into the box. Along the way back from our shopping trip, we decided to refuel the car, get snacks, etc. My mum was refueling the car, while my sister and I went into the convenience store to grab the goodies. My sister [sic] at the time always had a stash of Bubblelicious gum in the car but decided to get something else and left the gum in the car. When we got back and opened the car door, low and behold we saw Yoyo suspiciously smacking on something pink. He must’ve decided that he was going to have some nice snack too. He was chewing on a piece of my sister’s gum. However, he hadn’t eaten the wrapper or the gum itself. He was just sitting there chewing the gum happily in his seat. Luckily we were able to remove the gum from his mouth. He looked very disappointed to have his goodie taken away from him. Needless to say, that was the end to my sister’s stash of gum in the car.â€

839
“It was my sister, Brandi who found him. A friend of hers (we’ll call her Miss Bee) rescued the dog from these people who kept him chained outside all day… we live in Florida, so it can get really hot here. 107 Degrees Fahrenheit in the shade this year. And those people just left him out there all day without any water... So Miss Bee saved him, but she’s an older lady and can’t really handle large dogs, so she called my sister, who works for her. Brandi came home with this huge dog that night. My house is home to four generations of Italian women, so you can imagine how loud it got when we all realized she had brought a dog home without telling anyone! At first, we didn’t plan on keeping him. At least, that’s the opinion my grandmother, mother and I voiced very adamantly. We figured we were going to foster him and find him a good home. That idea lasted maybe half an hour before the kids warmed up to him and started running around with him in the backyard. My sister has a two year old girl and four year old boy. They fell in love with Apache, so we ended up naming him and keeping him.
840As sweet as he is, he is as dumb as a box of rocks, haha, but he’s good with the kids (even if he chews almost anything he can get ahold of). It took me a lot longer to accept him. I was worried about the kids and with his size, that he might accidently hurt one of them. Plus, none of us really have the time to train him and we can’t afford to send him to training. So [sic] he can be a little chaotic. Then I caught the kids laying all over him and he's just laying there in the grass, letting them, and I figured he wasn’t so bad. After all, every kid needs a pet, right?â€

846
847
“A memory with this munchkin mostly revolves around affection. Syd is extremely affectionate and always gives me kisses. One day, near Christmas, Syd climbed into my bed and starting rubbing her head against my own; it remained that way for 10 minutes and I’d never been so in love with an animal.â€

851
This concludes the pet memories of this article. Let’s give a great round of applause to all these people and their pets. I hope you enjoy this article as much as I do. Let’s hope we can get to our 100th anniversary!!! Until our next issue, I wish you the very best!

855
856
Ears pricked. Attention primed. The sound of a single click echoes in the morning air. An almost reverent connection exists between owner and horse, suspended in the clear blue sky. A bird chirps, breaking the silence, but the sound quickly dies. Quiet reigns over the countryside again. The trainer waits, becoming tense now. Her eyes are fixed on the horse, impatient. The horse snorts, paws at the ground. Slowly, the hooves inch towards the trainer as dust clouds emerge from below. The trainer relaxes, relieved and triumphant. She moves forward and presses the small handheld clicker. The horse follows the trainer, and they move around in a circle. She holds out grain; the horse approaches and eats it out of her hand. “Good job,†says the trainer, grinning, her smile like a sunbeam.

857
858
This method of clicker training utilizes operant conditioning, a way of associating certain behaviors with rewards. This phrase refers to a specific learning process in which a behavior and its strength are modified by a reinforcement, either positive or negative. To fully understand the experiment, we have to identify the stimuli and the specific responses to said stimuli. Our first stimulus is fairly easy to identify: the sound of the clicker. This stimulus invokes a conditioned response, which, here, too, is easy to identify: the horse’s movement. The conditioned response in this experiment simply means that the horse associates a sound with a positive reward. That reward, is, of course, the grain that the trainer offers her horse. If the trainer is to continue this process with her horse, the horse will gain an understanding that a clicking sound means snacks, and with this, the trainer has prevailed. The horse has learned a new skill through basic operant conditioning.

859
860
This poses the question of how much a horse really knows. Horses are highly trainable and certainly smart, but just how intelligent are they?

861
862

* * *

863
864
In a small concrete room, a researcher leads a dark brown horse to a wall plastered with different-sized shapes. The horse moves forward and touches the larger triangle with his nose; the researcher hands him a treat. Tomorrow, the horse will be shown different shapes than the ones from today. Now that he has learned the concept of small and large, he will choose the bigger shape. He will demonstrate that his memory of this concept is still intact ten years later when led into a similar room with paper shapes.

865
866
In this experiment by the Equine Research Foundation of Aptos, California, horses learned concepts quickly and easily, demonstrating their impressive memory. When learning about other horses and even humans, their cognitive abilities were even more complex.

867
868

* * *

869
870
The neighs of horses surround the room, both from audio recordings and the real horses. An unassuming black camera sitting in the back films everything. To each recording—familiar groups, unfamiliar groups and neighboring groups—the horses respond differently and know which groups are which. This experiment took place at the University of Rennes in France; another study, which occurred in France, demonstrated horses' ability to distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar horses even after a long absence.

871
872
Photographs of nearly identical human faces line the walls of a building at the Oklahoma State University. The researcher leads the many varying horses inside. Sets of large amber eyes gaze at the pictures; when prompted, each horse nudges the identical twin he has been taught to differentiate between. When introduced to the twin in real life, the horses move towards the one they have been taught to like and not the other. According to the results of this experiment, horses are actually better than humans at figuring out which identical twin is which, as well as distinguishing between their voices.

873
874
Both of these studies deal with slightly more complicated psychological feats: motor memory and object permanence. The concepts are linked to memory, association, and learning. The horses in our experiment are different than most humans in the sense that they have been taught object permanence, whereas most human children adapt to it on their own. Object permanence is a skill that allows our brains to understand the difference between a presence and a lack thereof. The horses in this experiment display an understanding of object permanence in the sense that they are able to identify not only a person but also what separates one from another, even from a picture. This skill displays a wide range of cognitive strengths in horses. However, there is more to this experiment than just being able to identify a person without them being present. Motor memory can also be studied from this experiment. The horses, having been taught the differences between sets of twins (their voices, small physical differences, etc.), display motor memory by physically selecting one twin over another. If, for example, one twin had a mole on their chin while the other did not, a horse’s ability to differentiate between the twins based on this physical trait would show that the horse successfully retained this information they obtained from training and was able to continue this skill outside of lessons.

875
876

* * *

877
878
Several red buckets, lined up in a row, shine in the light of the afternoon sun. A man with wind-blown black hair faces a row of horses behind the middle bucket, attempting to signal that this is the bucket with the food. The horses dip their sun-dappled heads in the grain and begin to eat. An hour later, though, when the man moves away from the middle bucket, his eyes still on it, the horses mill around, confused. This study proved the limitations of horses’ cognition when sensing the intentions of humans.

879
880
All of these methodical experiments display equine cognitive strength and skill. As we delve into these experimental examples, we analyze the utilization of operant conditioning, motor memory, and object permanence. In picking apart these experiments, we can get a better idea of the cognitive capacity of horses.

881
882
Despite the lack of research on the self-awareness of horses, scientists hypothesize that they do not have a good sense of what humans or other horses think. As social creatures, horses learn rapidly and have adept memories; they are also sensitive to negative and positive stimuli and associate the stimuli with outcomes as quickly as they do information.

883
884
We see that horses’ social cognitive abilities are very similar to humans, and, in some cases, better. They are intelligent, adaptive creatures, and training them isn’t all about commands and responses; there will always be deeper psychological depth behind every lesson, every skill, and every forward movement taken.

924
In celebration of our 75th anniversary, we decided to promote some of our beloved journalists to the senior journalist positions. Through intensive grading and discussion, these two have beautifully written articles, are greatly involved with the Gazette, and definitely deserve a rank among the other senior journalists. Please congratulate roux and mr.man78; their hard work and dedication to the Gazette is something we are extremely thankful for. We are so glad we are able to call you members of the Gazette family—thank you both for being such lovely journalists and people. Below, you will see two paragraphs showcasing their reactions to becoming senior journalists:

925
roux

926
I just wanted to say how honoured I am to be chosen to be a senior journalist after being with the Gazette since March 2018. I, initially, was skeptical when Bon [bonfire.] approached me to be part of the online newspaper, but she seemed so honest and friendly that I couldn't resist and therefore applied as soon as I could.

927The Gazette has helped me in more ways than I think it realises; the people create a community that is beyond welcoming and understanding. It always makes me smile to see what the other members have been saying on the Discord server.
928So... My thoughts on being a senior journalist? Wowie. Thank you so much. I hope to put justice to the title. I love you all so much.

929
mr.man78

930
A little under a year ago, the fantastic Angel approached me about writing for the gazette. At the time, I had no idea that spaces followed periods, or that semicolons had a use in the English language, but I had nothing else to do. So I sent in an application and became a member. A bit of brutal honesty: I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had no idea this would cause me to look into journalism as a career. I had no idea this would inspire me to write and research like my life depended on it. But most of all: I had no idea I would learn so much. The research from my articles either built upon what I already knew or set the foundation for a new object of mild obsession. Alright, you got me. My not-so mild obsession. I was happy to work, and I loved writing, but a senior journalist seemed like a promotion that was so far away. Yet, here I am. These earth-angels decided that little old me deserved this huge honor. And for that, I can never thank them enough.
