Chapter 993: Soul Interrogation (Part â… )
Translator: TransN Editor: TransN

The magic core which was shaped like a giant spindle suddenly expanded while giving out a purple light. Its luminescence lit up the entire hall. It floated two meters above the ground and began to spin, looking like a fabulous merry-go-round.

Seeing this, Roland had to admit that the magic power, to a certain extent, could not be explained by physical concepts. After this skeleton structure automatically expanded, all its parts could somehow stay in the air without falling to the ground under the influence of gravity. It looked as if there was an invisible hand holding them together.

"How did the underground civilization create these things?" He looked at Pasha. "Can you make copies of them if I give you the same materials?"

"I'm afraid we cannot do so for now, Your Majesty." Pasha shook her head. "Although I'm reluctant to admit it, the underground civilization did have a deeper understanding of the magic power than the Union. Celine is already one of the best researchers of the Quest Society, but even she only learned to operate them in the past hundreds of years."

"We are short-handed. It's a major problem." Celine turned around. "We can't activate the magic core simply by injecting our magic power into it. We have to connect ourselves to the thousands of sensors in it. Common people can never do this."

"In other words, if I want to learn to use this magic core, I have to transfer my soul into an original carrier in the same way as you did?" Tilly asked.

"That's right. A summer insect never knows how cold the winter is. A deaf man never hears anything in the world." Celine sighed with profound resignation. "A human being can hardly imagine what I feel when I'm operating the magic core. I can't find an appropriate word in the human language to describe this particular feeling to you either. Given that, now only Pasha and I can control a magic core."

"Wait... Do you mean that the main tentacle on you, which looks rough, is actually very sensitive?" Roland was surprised.

"Yes. Not only the main tentacles but also the other tentacles on us are highly sensitive," Celine confirmed. "They are able to smell and to feel cold and hot, wet and dry. They can sense even the slightest touch, and the main tentacles can even capture the flow of the magic power. So once you transfer your soul into a carrier, you won't be able to adapt to a human body anymore. Are you interested in it?"

"No, I was merely curious..." Roland turned his head away to stop the conversation. He had to clear his mind at such a crucial moment. He remembered that an original carrier's main tentacle was also her weapon and according to Phyllis, the carriers were as powerful as God's Punishment Witches regarding physical strength.

Based on what Celine had said just now, he realized that an ordinary man who was unable to sense the magic power could never study it in depth. Without a reliable observation and measurement method, this study could only be conducted by a few original carriers for now.

"No. 3 core has been activated in the Soul Instrument mode. The soul transfer is about to begin." Celine's voice interrupted his thoughts. Hearing this, Pasha and Alethea also inserted their main tentacles into the giant spindle apparatus.

Roland widened his eyes in fear of missing a single detail of the process.

However, this transfer process did not look as extraordinary as he imagined. Two beams of light shone out of the core and covered the two stone beds below. The magic power inside the skeleton structure began to surge. After 15 minutes, Celine sighed of relief. "Well, we are lucky. The instrument has caught the demon's soul. Now, all we need to do is wait for it to enter the God's Punishment Warrior's body."

"That's it?" Roland blinked.

"Yes, in fact, the Soul Transfer is a process of exchanging Keys," Pasha explained. "If you had observed the process through a Five-Colored Stone, you would have been able to see the demon's beam of light move to the God's Punishment Warrior."

Before the ancient witch finished her sentence, the God's Punishment Warrior who had lied on the bed motionlessly suddenly opened his eyes!

His face was contorted and thus looked exceptionally ferocious. He could not stop shaking and his fingers, which looked like dead wood, twisted violently. Some weird sounds came out of his throat. Seeing this, all the witches around subconsciously took a step back.

"Don't worry. That's the normal reaction shortly after the soul enters into an unfamiliar body," Zooey said. "We didn't look any better when we transferred our souls into the God's Punishment Warriors for the first time. We can hardly eat or drink without someone else's help."

Roland pictured the scene: a group of exiled ancient witches kept fumbling around in a cold underground cave for a dozen years. He was deeply impressed by the willpower of the Taquila survivors.

"Now that the demon is panicking and in a confused state, it's time for us to get started, lady Camilla." Zooey glanced at everyone and continued. "No matter what you want to know, you can ask me directly. I'll repeat what I've heard from the demon." She paused. "And I have a request."

"Go ahead." Roland nodded.

"As long as I don't gesture a 'stop', please don't halt the Mind Resonance no matter what happens," Zooey stressed each word with due strength. "The interrogation is the most important thing."

"This..." Camilla Dary looked hesitant, which was a rare thing.

"I promise." Without any hesitation, Roland approved Zooey's request. Seeing her determination, he believed he did not need to worry too much, and he really wanted to respect her wish.

"If so, I'll start to use my ability now." Chief Butler of Sleeping Island looked at Roland profoundly and then put one hand on the shoulder of Zooey and the other on the shoulder of the God's Punishment Warrior.

The next moment, Zooey looked miserable.

It seemed that she could not stop herself from growling out. However, Roland immediately knew that this roar must have come from the demon and it might somehow be able to roar through the witch's mouth in the Mind Resonance.

"What have you done to me?" Zooey's voice sounded totally different now. "Stupid crawlers, low-grade species, let me go! Otherwise, I'll make this woman suffer!"

The witches could not help gasping. "Is Zooey..."

"Don't worry. The demon is just bluffing," said Anna, calmly. "Look at her finger."

At this moment, the others noticed that the God's Punishment Witch raised one finger and shook it with ease. Apparently, she was not controlled by the demon.

Roland quickly understood why she acted this way. In comparison to a question-and-answer method, letting the demon speak through her own mouth was a better approach since it would give the demon less time to think and prepare.

"You were defeated by us." Roland sneered. "If we are stupid crawlers, what about you?"

"I was... defeated?" Zooey's voice sounded much deeper all of a sudden. She seemed to be stunned and caught in agony. Roland could not tell whether the painful expression came from Zooey herself or the confused demon.

He did not want to give the enemy any chance to take a breath, so he continued to put pressure on the demon. "Yes, you got riddled with bullets, and your army was annihilated. Half of your soldiers were killed on the battlefield, and the other half failed to flee back to Taquila in the end. We burnt down thousands of them and destroyed your underground camp, so tell me who's the low-grade species!?"

Roland shouted out the last question to the demon.

"No, this is impossible, unless, unless..." Zooey shook her head violently. After a moment, she looked up and muttered in astonishment, "Did you get a legacy shard and upgrade your species? Did you create those weapons... based on the contents of the shard?"

Roland captured the keywords instantly. "What's a legacy shard? What do you mean by 'upgrade'?"

「ーCheckã€

I declared after moving my knight, Ed’s movement came to a halt suddenly.

「u… uuun…ã€

Ed was desperately trying to find an escape route… but it was for naught.
I had confirmed my win 9 moves ago.

Right now, Iー David Zafran Chrebl, along with my younger brother, Edgar, were playing a tabletop game from his previous life called shogi. At first, Ed had the advantage since he was using standard 『Opening Movesã€, but my recent practice started to swing the game to my victory.
As I move my gaze away from the sight of him still glaring at the board, which he made skilfully by shaving down a piece of wood, I thought more about this game.

Opening Moves.

It is indeed interesting that a game that doesn’t have a practical use in any way to have built up a hundred years worth of research in standard opening moves.
I didn’t know if I should be amazed or shocked.
In any case, it’s impossible for me to deny the cultural richness of his so-called previous life.

(TL: 定石 – established tactic/play by the book。My chess friends gave me this link )

「……I admit my defeatã€

He said reluctantly.
I gave a wry smile to my competitive younger brother. But, I don’t dislike this rebellious and straightforward younger brother of mine.

The royal library gathers young geniuses from all over the country, and there are many children even smarter than Ed. Even though I said it, personally, I felt self-conscious when being put among those people.
However, many half-baked young librarians broke down from receiving repeated “rejection†from the Royal Library Labyrinth. For them to last in the group and be promoted to an assistant librarian, young librarians should not be only smart but also persistent.

Those who ignore and pay no mind to the refusal from the Library Labyrinth and steadily piling up research results ー that is by not being discouraged from having to read one or even mountains of books, that person is sure to be the one who is accepted.

In that respect, when comparing Ed to the young librarians gathered from throughout the kingdom, he may possibly score average in his intelligence aspect, but from his personality aspect, he was really fit as a librarian. No, considering his age, he can just strengthen his 「intelligence〠aspect from now on.
Ed hadn’t even become 5 years old yet.

「Ed, would you choose to set your mind to be one of the librarians in the royal library?ã€

I asked him about the thing that concerned me.

「While the Royal Library Labyrinth sounds interesting, but I have duties elsewhere. I think being in a job that restricts me in one place will have to wait for nowã€
「Ah, you still have to chase the other reincarnator, is that right? Although, are you sure he’s in the same age-range as you are right now, Ed?ã€
「I think so, but even then, he’s really a terrible opponent. Right now, there’s a possibility that he has moved adults in his surrounding around and is scheming somethingã€
「If you managed to uncover the knowledge that sleeps in the depth of the Royal Library’s mystery, won’t that be useful to fight that Kizaki reincarnator guy? In reality, just using your knowledge from previous life, you are able to reach the 4th labyrinth floor like me. You don’t have to announce it if you don’t want to create an uproar, but if you do, you are going to overwrite my record as the youngest librarianã€
「About that, I’m not that great or anything. The only reason I passed the labyrinth guard’s questions is because that knowledge was considered as common sense back in my previous worldã€

Royal Library Labyrinthー was also known as, Library Dungeon.
But its true identity is a bit more complicated.

When explaining Royal Library Labyrinth, it couldn’t be explained with the word “Royalâ€, “Library†, or even “Labyrinthâ€.
The Royal Library Labyrinth is an ancient ruin that exist even before the Monokans Royal Capital even exists and host 2 of the ancient wisdoms of this world. The labyrinth was divided into so many layers where each of them was filled with bookshelves, sculptures, pictures, and other museum-like objects. In addition, there are mysterious “guards†placed throughout the labyrinth, and unless you can answer their question, you can’t proceed to the next section of the labyrinth. Especially, before the gate to the next floor, there is a special guard called 「Floor Guard〠who has a really short but difficult question.

It’s difficult to answer the question unless you understand the content of the mountains of books piled in that dungeon floor. This question can be answered by a team of several people, but in that case, there will be some limitation on what you can do on the next floor. Both Ed and I had each cleared the questions up until the 3rd floor alone and reached the 4th floor. At the moment, except for Ed and I, there are only a handful of people who managed to reach the 4th floor all by themselves.

In any case, I couldn’t grasp why it was called the Royal Library Labyrinth. There is no royalty so it’s not exactly “Royalâ€, the content was more like museum-art gallery-ish so it couldn’t be called “Library†either, and it’s not a dungeon so calling it a “Labyrinth†leave a bad taste in my mouth.

「Besides, the Library Labyrinth gathers promising children from all over the kingdom and raised them into young librarians for that reason, isn’t that right? I don’t feel like being grouped together inside that sort of elite groupã€

Ed shrugged his shoulder.
As he said, the Royal Library Labyrinth librarian group/department was gathering specially gifted and promising children from all over the country and gave them education for the sake of advancing the research in the library.
That was how I was scouted as a child librarian.

「Ed can continue reading books without getting tired or needing a break. If you ask me, it’s an unbelievably enviable skillsã€

I said so while fixing the position of my spectacles.
This “Spectacles†was also one of Ed’s invention.
It was made by melting quartz into a transparent material called “glass†and creating a convex plate called “lensâ€. This lens fixed the weak eyesight by shifting the light’s focal point and able to fix the eyesight of the wearer. On top of that, the lens thickness can be adjusted to a certain “degree†to match the wearer’s eyesight.
Since it requires very delicate techniques, it can’t be produced except by using Ed’s acquired transformation ability from his 〈Alchemist〉 class.

(TL: calling it glasses in a fantasy setting is kinda un-immersive)

Ed gave the first prototype to me, who has bad eyesight due to constant reading, as a present.
It’s a shame that I couldn’t wear it in public, but it will be useful in the library’s frontline, away from public eyes.

「Nevertheless, after seeing these glasses, pencil, ballpoint pen, paper manufacturing process, and press-printing method, I think it’s a waste to confine your knowledge inside the libraryã€

Fine quality papers that were just starting to be sold by the Chrebl Firm, was spread on the top of the table where Ed and I were currently sitting.

At first, papers were imported from the eastern region, but in recent years, the eastern region’s country isolation policy causing the drop in supply, resulting in the price of paper in Monokans to skyrocket into tenfold. Because the countries in the eastern region kept the manufacturing process a top secret, from the Kingdom-side, not only the manufacturing process, but we don’t even know the materials needed to produce it.

In this regard, Ed’s knowledge from his previous life proved to be effective.
Even though Ed has no experience as a papermaker in his previous life, he knew the general outline of paper manufacturing process thanks to his 「Compulsory Education〠he had. By comparing that knowledge and the ancient paper-manufacturing process that I uncovered from the Ancient Library Labyrinth, we were able to duplicate the manufacturing process, even to the point of mass-producible level. This manufacturing method was later brought to the head of the Chrebl Firm, president Poporus, through our father, who then started manufacture and sell 「Chrebl Paper〠a few months ago.
The paper that was in front of us was the Chrebl paper sponsored by Chrebl Firm.

「But if we took the other reincarnator into consideration, we really can’t grow too fast, isn’t that right?ã€

Ed murmured with a troubled face.
Certainly, if we use too much technology that is too advanced for this world, the “other†person who held the same knowledge from another world could sniff him out.

「Back to our topic about paper, there are tons of trials and error being made from the other company even before us. Modern alchemy, or so it was called. In fact, they even made bad-quality paper out of strawsã€
「Pencils too, aren’t they? Originally, it was some mine engineer-ish people’s idea to use graphite like a chalk, so pencils shouldn’t attract that much attention… I guessã€
「As for pencils, we’ll purposely mess with the graphite and clay ratio and create some inferior products, so it will be fine. But this time, we’ll sell it using other company, not the Chrebl Firm. Regarding ballpoint… As we expected beforehand, I don’t think we should sell them to the massesã€

The ballpoint pen was made by replacing the usual pen tip with a very small ball and attach a fine ink tube on its back. It doesn’t need to be dipped in ink every so often when used to write letters, but it needs a very precise manufacturing process, currently Ed cannot mass produce it. He made a handful as a gift for me and other trustworthy people, while also taking the opportunity to raise his skills. We still can’t introduce this to the public market.

As for the on-field decision making, Ed entrusted everything to Father, Popurus-san, and me.
He knows what he can and he can’t do, so he entrusted the task to other people.

I think this was one of Ed’s virtues.
Trying to rashly do everything by yourself will reduce the efficiency and inflict more harm than good.
It seemed that what I can learn from this little brother of mine are not only his knowledge from his previous life.

「But in the end, I only imitated the things that I had seen in my previous life. I still think that David-niisan is the real genius here. I only taught some general concept of basic algebra, but you can use them to recreate Classic Newtonian Mechanic and differential-integral calculation. In my previous life, that knowledge was applied by countless mathematician over several generationsã€
「Ah, no. It’s because you told me the general ideas so I could imagine the concepts. In addition, Ed had already given a faint hint about the goal. Einstein… was it? It’s thank to your world’s physicist who drew the conclusion for the theory of relativity, even though it still needs a little bit proving…ã€
「……When I am watching you, there times when I question my own intelligence, niisanã€

Ed said in amazement.
But in reality, it should be my line!
How far does our civilization lag behind compared to Ed’s previous world?
To begin with, Marquekt didn’t even know the basic concept of science.

I was called the Natural Phenomenon Behaviorist, someone who strives to empirically derive the law behind how everything works. The concept was more or less similar to what Ed called 『Science〠from his world.
That’s why, as a herald who walks in this field, the story of Ed’s previous life sounds so exciting and enviable at the same time.

(TL: previously translated as Natural Phenomenon Scholar. I think behaviorist seems more appropriate)

After observing the changes on the red health bar, I examined the logs recorded during the previous battle. “Aid Recovery 1†had proven itself invaluable for a novice seeker’s skills.

In a span of 30 seconds, the section chief’s health was gradually restored and the activation of “Aid Recovery 1†demonstrated its immediate effect.

â—† Activity Log â—†

『Arihitoã€activates『Aid Recovery 1ã€â†’『Kyoukaã€health restored

(At last, I was able to verify it with this.)

The section chief’s health bar that decreased for about 70% recovered above 50% in one go. Her breathing had normalized from being winded. Her arm swelled a lot too, but it’s now in better shape - leaving just a small bruise.

Assuming a Level 1 seeker got 10 health points, 5 health points recovery in just 30 seconds would be more than just convenient. If the Redface’s single attack back then had a base damage of 10 points or greater, it would have been futile. Lucky for us, the demon’s attacks dealt lesser than anticipated.

At that moment, the section chief is in a stupor. The intense pain ought to have been traumatic. Her health got restored but … maybe this is the skill’s limit. Could there be another skill meant to treat status ailments?

While she rests, I took the opportunity to grab the Redface’s corpse then jammed it into the leather bag. This fluff covered, red haired rodent still looked atrocious even after its defeat. Bulkier than a usual watadama, the leather bag which was supposed to house up to four regular watadamas, brimmed to an instant.

“Hey… are you alright? Allow me to take you to a healer.†(Rival)

Theresa comes back with Rival. His companions convoyed the section chief via a stretcher. Rival enquires me while en route.

“What happened out there?! Did you come across a group of watadama? (Rival)

“Budwick’s party can fill you in on the details. They used a “Scroll of Return†when the “NAMED†demon attacked them.†(Arihito)

“Damn it… those “NAMEDâ€. They turn quite aggressive once they notice a threat. Encountering them in random inside the labyrinth also doesn’t help. Those guys were aware of them. They probably needed themselves to earn money. You guys are lucky as well. Your party managed to escape. (Rival)

It would be in our best interests to declare we got “Defeated†in our encounter to avoid rumors. We wouldn’t even had a chance to beat that “Redface†if not thanks to my odd job.

(I must report the Redface incident to Luisa and I’ll leave it up to her to come up with an official announcement that it has been subjugated.†Budwick’s party messed up but I’ll keep that to myself for now. I’m in no position to criticize them and besides, I’m not more skillful than any of them.)

The “Rearguard†skill sets got shortcomings too. In times of battle, I’m left to my devices and that leaves me at a very vulnerable position. I need skills than can keep me bonded to my Vanguard and eliminate the possibility of being flanked. Thus, one of my top priorities is to acquire those skills to patch-up glaring deficiencies.

The Beginner’s Labyrinth can be cleared through teamwork - the vanguard fights and the rearguard ensures support. The labyrinth won’t prove to be too difficult provided the enemies won’t deal a damage that exceeds the amount a skill can nullify.

“Support Defense 1†provides a 10 point bonus but soon enough we’ll be encountering stronger demons. At its current state, the skill won’t be of much use against attacks from tougher opponents. I do hope “Support Defense 2†provides a larger buff to counter-balance the damage we’ll receive from stronger monsters.

Finally, just before exiting the labyrinth, we stumbled upon Elicia and Suzuna.

Even though these two were nowhere near us during the encounter with the Redface, our battle scars were a dead giveaway. I’m sure they’ll go curious so unless I want myself to caught by the tail, I need to be consistent while being extra careful in what to tell to them.

I guess Elicia’s ties her long golden hair into two pigtails whenever she’s fighting. A twin tail princess knight but now isn’t the best time to be fantasizing.

“What the hell happened…?†(Elicia)

“A “NAMED†appeared. We were put in a difficult situation but we managed to deal with it.†(Arihito)

“… You dealt with it… the red watadama? That thing only spawns like once a month. Even Level 3 parties sometimes get in trouble. It’s just too fast that it’s difficult to handle making it more difficult to escape. Dealt with it how… and in what way…?†(Elicia)

Elicia seems quite familiar with the Redface. She inquired us with genuine curiosity as to how we have miraculously survived. She was quite nosey and it left me with nothing more but an agape expression.

“…I’m sorry. I may not look like it but I’ve been oriented about those things and I’m just thankful I’m still standing here talking to you. What’s more amazing though is I’ve just reincarnated and I was able to escape certain death.†(Arihito)

“No apologies needed. You’re lucky. I need not worry even if the two of you decide to hunt here another time. The red one won’t be spawning anytime soon and that puts everyone at ease.†(Elicia)

Our exchange is a delicate one. We wouldn’t want to scare Suzuna, who is a beginner seeker. Moreover, there is also the possibility of this Redface respawning.

(So this confirms that “NAMED†demons tend to pursue the first opponent they come in contact with. It’s a relief that the aggressive, red watadama is out for now, but there will always be a time that another “NAMED†demon would appear.)

“Thank you for your concern.†(Arihito)

She’s a quite a leveled adventurer but it doesn’t get to her head. As a novice, I’m humbled.

“Oh, I guess I might have talked too much. Please allow us sometime to accompany your party. My name is Elicia. May I know yours?†(Elicia)

“Arihito. It may be a bit hard to pronounce but please call me Ari-hito. I’m pretty sure you’re Suzuna.†(TL:turns to Suzuna)

“Well, yes. That person who was carried a while ago was also a reincarnator right?†(Suzuna)

“Oh, yes, still in a stupor but she’s okay. She is out of danger.†(Arihito)

“Did you use potions? They’re quite valuable items. Have you got a handful of them?†(Suzuna)

Elicia stares at my face and prepared to ask about the obvious question – my job.

“No way… for such a capable rearguard…†(Elicia)

“Is something the matter? If you have questions, I’ll be glad to answer.†(Arihito)

“It’s nothing… really… If there’s news of a versatile rearguard, it’ll definitely make the headline.†(Elicia)

As I recall, Elicia wanted to party with an excellent rearguard. She might be willing to reorganize her party once I get to explain my job.

I have concerns though. She appears to be a solo seeker but there seemed to be a risk being enlisted as her rearguard. Not knowing that risk makes me uncomfortable. Suzuna is with her and she’s exposed to that unusual hazard. Certain risks can be managed though. It just leaves a bad taste when all I can do is just hope the best.

(In theory, Elicia can be an excellent vanguard but we have to manage her risks.)

I’m gathering opportunities here and I have decided to prioritize the section chief. If I ever get the chance to meet Elicia and Suzuna again, I bet we can chat a little bit more.

“Well then, I’ll be on my way.†(Arihito)

“Ah, I was really glad that I was able to talk with a reincarnator from Japan. Let’s formalize this greeting someday. What do you say? (Suzuna)

“Of course! Let’s have a hearty chat next time!†(Arihito)

(Because we’ve just got reincarnated and still coping in this world.)

Suzuna bows her head repeatedly then proceeded with Elicia. It will be their pilot dive into the labyrinth today and they will have to exit a little later.

I paced toward Theresa who was there waiting. But when I tried to talk to her… I noticed that there was something different about her.

“Theresa?†(Arihito)

“……..†(Theresa)

She didn’t say anything but instead, she affixed her gaze at me. Well, since I’m a bit accustomed to it already, it was not a problem. She just came around my back and accompanied me quietly.

I glanced back and told her. “Erm… I will be using mercenary tickets again tomorrow. Will you come with me?†It took a while for her to respond. Mercenaries might not have the privileges to choose an employer. That’s what I was thinking…

Then she nods over and again. I guess, she’ll join me with my adventure tomorrow.

“Well then, it’s set. I will say my goodbyes to you at the mercenary guild today so promise me to come with me again tomorrow.†(Arihito)

Theresa didn’t answer instead she gave me a wry smile. She then fled and left me to chase after Rival’s group who were exiting the labyrinth.

TL NOTES:

ä¿¡é ¼åº¦ - is parsed as ä¿¡ faith, é ¼ - trust and 度 - degree.
It is actually translated in the dictionary as dependability; credibility; coefficient of confidence
I have placed a lot of thinking if I should translate it as confidence level, confidence coefficient or reliability and many others which pertain to the same definition. I had a simple chat with my editor and he said it could be ‘rapport’. But hey, if we’re talking about a party, should it be something cooperative but at the same time reliable? Your term should revolve around that.

The actual term I was thinking about was at the tip of my tongue for days and thus I arrived at ‘Synergy’.

For now I shall call it synergy unless proven otherwise. It gives a better meaning of belonging in a group/party and at the same time holding the principle of being reliable.

I have two chapters queued to my editor this time so as long as time permits, it should be edited and released. I really would not want to release an english loaded with grammar errors so please bear with us for the meantime.

Thank you for your time reading.

Cheers! World Peace!
