U.S. presumably tied up somewhat fighting Japan and Churchill wanted to attack Italy first which happened through North Africa (though landing at Italy might have been better idea than landing at France to end war quickly?) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Roundup_(1942) this says Churchill opposed U.S. generals pushing for early invasion of Europe during Russian campaign and wanted to attack in mediterranian instead, with wikipedia giving some bs-sounding reasons)
