A neurotypical brain has more dopamine in their prefrontal cortex which can allow them to find pleasure in things that somebody with ADD might consider boring. Basically person with low dopamine will spend more time in default mode. It was found that when trying to learn something, one with ADHD would have trouble switching to task mode. They just stayed in default mode. And when a neurotypical person had to switch to task mode, they did it at the snap of a finger. They found that when you increase the dopamine levels in the prefrontal cortex, it's much easier for the brain to switch to task mode. So medications like Adderall and Ritalin put more dopamine in the synapses which, in turn, mediates the switch from default mode to task mode."
